NSFW: Apple, iOS 8 Health, and the Gordian Knot of healthcare bureaucracy
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
This year I've spent a lot of time in doctor's offices and I see what a giant mess the electronic health records (EHR) industry really is. And I don't think Apple's going to solve the problems facing the American healthcare industry. Apple's telling us that iOS 8's Health feature will give us a way of sharing important diagnostic information with our doctors. But it's predicated on a huge assumption: That our medical providers are affiliated with an institution that's willing to buy in to this particular data stream. Because of my own health issues and those in my family, I deal with a lot of medical specialists. All of them use electronic health records (EHR) systems,…

Apple releases new iPhone 5s ad, makes 'Dreams' come true
by Guest Rich Edmonds- 0 replies
Apple has released a new ad for the iPhone 5s called 'Dreams'. While mobile devices are mainly viewed as personal toys as well as mobile phones, this new video shows how the iPhone 5s is utilized in numerous professional and personal situations, including both medical and fire-fighter careers, to aid said folk with their life changing work. Dreams is part of Apple's current "You're more powerful than you think" series of ads that previously included excellent Parenthood, the musically unfortunate Strength, and the original Powerful commercials. The song used in Dreams is When I Grow Up by Jennifer O'Connor. Here are the apps and accessories that make an appearance: …

Even though Facebook is very useful when it comes to staying connected with friends, spying on your ex, and pretending you’re awfully happy with your life, the social network isn’t letting you do this for charity — rather, it’s vacuuming up as much information about you as it can to sell better ads. Facebook is willing to go pretty far to get all the information it can about you and it doesn’t have a spotless track record when it comes to observing the privacy of its customers. However, a new class action suit that started in Austria is inviting international Facebook users to join in and demand that Facebook fork over cash in exchange for using our personal data. In t…

Beats tweets out awkward Pill + Siri video [Update: Pulled]
by Guest Chuong H Nguyen- 0 replies
The Beats Twitter account shared a link to a strange video that shows an anthropomorphized pair of pill speakers talking to an invisible incarnation of Siri's voice, celebrating Apple's acquisition of Beats. The Beats Pills ask Siri for the direction to "Dre's party," to which Siri responds that the party is "by invitation only." When the Beats Pills ask for further instructions, Siri's closing line is, "Sorry, I didn't get that." It's a bizarre video and while it shows Apple's logo at the end, isn't something in style or tone that Apple would produce. What do you think of it? Update: The tweet has been deleted and the video removed. Speculate away as to why t…

How to use speak auto-text for visual accessibility on iPhone and iPad
by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies
iOS has a lot of great accessibility options for those with visual impairments and one of the most convenient ones is the speak auto-text feature. Once activated, your iPhone or iPad will speak any auto-corrections or auto-capitalizations to you before they happen. Auto-correct doesn't always get it right and speak auto-text can help you catch errors before you hit the send button! How to have your iPhone or iPad speak auto-corrections and capitalizations Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. Tap on General. Tap on Accessibility. Turn On the option for Speak Auto-text. That's it! Now whenever your iPhone or iPad tries to correct a word or capi…

Court approves Apple's $450 million e-book settlement
by Guest Chuong H Nguyen- 0 replies
Apple has secured a preliminary approval from the courts for its e-book settlement of $450 million. The class action law suit was filed against Apple on behalf of consumers and 33 states alleging that the iBooks-seller had conspired with five publishers to set e-book prices high, hurting consumers. The case case was raised in July 2013 when the Department of Justice accused Apple of violating antitrust laws to raise prices and hurt competition with rivals like Amazon. Apple agreed to settle in June and the deal would have Apple paying $400 million to consumers and $50 million to lawyers in the ruling is upheld in appeals. If Apple wins its appeal, then it would pay n…

Rogers will apparently remain in charge of Beats Music as well, managing all of Apple's music streaming efforts, according to the Wall Street Journal: Rogers, a former Yahoo executive, will run both teams to create cohesion in Apple's streaming-music options, according to the people familiar with the matter. Pandora and Spotify, the two-biggest streaming music services, each offer both a free ad-supported service and a subscription-based…

Unlock your phone legally starting today
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

President Obama will today sign a bill into law that will allow American citizens to legally unlock their phones in order to take them to another cellular carrier, either in the United States or abroad. The President announced his intent to sign the bill last week. The new law is only a temporary measure, and is only valid until 2015. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill last week, after it had previously been passed by the Senate, and both chambers passed the bill unanimously. The unlocking a phone while still under your carrier's contract has been technically illegal in the United States since the beginning of last year. Now, if your phone is capable o…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BZH29nBmac Portable battery packs for your smartphone or tablet are handy. You could buy one, but you can save money by making your own. We've covered how to make a battery pack with an Altoids can, but newer devices can draw a lot more power—so a bigger case can get you more juice. Lenmar Enterprises' guide uses a plastic bar soap container instead of the smaller candy tin, and is much easier to make to boot. The plastic container closes tight and can hold more batteries. Check the video for full details.

HP, Gilt, and Michael Bastian partner for stylish new smartwatch
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies
HP's rushing to pre-empt the iWatch with a smartwatch partnership with designer Michael Bastian and online luxury retailer Gilt. Details of this smartwatch will do are slim, but we do know that they're aiming to have it work with iOS and Android — nope, it's not Android Wear — and that there will be companion apps for both platforms that allow users to customize the watch's interface. The partnership with Bastian is meant to make a smartwatch that looks as good as it's likely to cost, though HP's going to have a lot of competition in that space, including but not limited to the Pebble Steel, Withings Activité, Moto 360, and the long-rumored iWatch. What we know about…

Once upon a time, Google had a dream. A floating dream. They wanted a showroom at sea, housed in a large barge. Unfortunately, this plan never got off the ground (or, um, sea) and now the Google Barge that never was is headed off to a sad fate: the scrap yard. The barge is four-stories high, made of 63 shipping containers. It was built in Connecticut before heading across the nation to the West Coast. A similar barge also appeared in San Francisco last year. Google said the barges would be "an interactive space where people can learn about new technology." The barge was supposed to head to New York after, where the technorati could check out different gadgets with…

Black login screen on your Mac? Here's the fix!
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
You restarted your Mac, and now you can't log in. The Apple boot screen appears and pinwheels for a few moments, then the screen goes black. You can still see a cursor, but you can't log in and get any further. Don't panic! We have the fix! Print these instructions out or save them to an iOS device and read them from there — I'll walk you through how to recover. What's likely happened is that a system preference called a plist file has gotten corrupted or damaged somehow. The file is called com.apple.loginwindow.plist. In order to recover, you'll need to delete the file. There's a catch, though. This method requires you to have access to another Mac equipped with Fir…
