Skype group screen sharing now free for Mac desktop users
by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies
Microsoft is now allowing Skype Windows and Mac desktop users to enable group screen sharing for free for the first time, rather than needing a paid Skype premium subscription. Just in case you are not familiar with group screen sharing, Microsoft has a handy video that shows how it works. Basically, it allows users to share images on their desktop with two or more people in a group Skype call. Allowing this feature to be free from now on will certainly be a huge help for people who use Skype a lot for group calls. What do you think of Microsoft allowing group screen sharing to be access for free for Windows and Mac users? Source: Skype blog …

Microsoft's new SNIPP3T iPhone app is part of its plan to expand Bing search
by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies
This weekend, Microsoft quietly launched SNIPP3T for the iPhone, an app that grabs news and information on the internet about celebrities. As it turns out, it comes from Microsoft's Bing team in an effort to expand the search service's influence beyond the web browser. Microsoft says that, according to their data, 86 percent of all mobile users interact with the Internet with apps with the other 14 percent via web browsers. A four person team at Microsoft's Beijing office created SNIPP3T with the goal to show that Bing's data could be used in this kind of format. Microsoft team member , Donald Soog stated, "We're showing here that we can actually use the existing dat…

How to turn off Lock screen notifications in OS X Mavericks
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
OS X Mavericks introduced notifications to Mac's lock screen. Here's how to turn them off, and why it matters. All sorts of applications display data in notifications. Default applications like Calendar, Mail, Messages and others do; social media services supported by Apple like Twitter and Facebook can as well. So do many web sites and third-party apps. The lock screen keeps anyone who doesn't know your system password from logging in and doing damage to your computer when you're not looking, and keeping your data from prying eyes. But most applications that support system notifications will, by default, display them on the lock screen. This is one of those…

Apple Maps represents 70% of 4G mapping data on EE, ahead of Google Maps, which holds 25% of traffic. Additionally, Maps also holds a majority of traffic over the carrier's 3G network, according to EE: Traffic on the new Apple Maps now represents 70% of mapping traffic on the 4G network, from 60% in the second half of 2013, taking market share from Google maps, which is down 7ppts. This difference is even more marked over 3G where Apple Maps is up 19ppts and Google Maps is down 15ppts. If you use an iPhone on EE, do you use Apple's Maps app, or an…

Microsoft's new Mac vs. PC hyperbole
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

Microsoft has three new Surface Pro 3 ads out today that, as promised, switch from trying to attack the iPad to trying to attack the MacBook Air. Given how heart-breakingly, bank-breakingly unsuccessful Surface has been to date, it's hard not to sympathize. It's also hard not to think repeating past strategic failures will only result in more failures. Instead of shifting from iPad to MacBook, maybe Microsoft should shift from attacking Apple to attacking the PC market? Mac sales were up 18 percent year-over-year last quarter. The Mac has grown 32 out of the last 33 quarters. That's against Windows PC sales that continue to be on the decline. It's incredibly tough t…

How to use Weather for iPhone: The ultimate guide
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
The Weather app for iPhone is elegant but bare-bones. There are subtle, beautiful animations but nothing like radar maps to keep the really weather geeks happy. Still, you can check the temperature in celsius or fahrenheit, see hourly forecasts for the current day and daily forecasts for the next five days. You can also get humidity, chance of precipitation, and wind data for your current location or any major location, anywhere in the world. You can even access an overview in Notification Center or use Siri to access any and all of it. Also, if you have an iPad, there's no reason to feel left out — the App Store has you covered with plenty of great App Store alternatives…

This week we've got Godsmack, Guardians of the Galaxy comics, new experimental hip-hop and more! 1000hp - Godsmack Massachusetts takes a lot of pride in home-grown Godsmack: the release of their first new album in four years was a big enough deal in Boston for the mayor to name August 6th Godsmack Day. 1000hp is a collection of ten new tracks that show Sully Erna and crew in fine form. Some of these are straight up Godsmack head-thrashing rockers — I challenge you to …

Verizon may be about to close a loophole for its remaining unlimited data users
by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies

A new rumor claims Verizon Wireless is about to close a loophole that some of its grandfathered unlimited customers have used to continue to get that plan, even though Verizon stopped offering such a service for its new subscribers a few years ago. Droid-life.com, citing unnamed sources, claims that on August 24, Verizon will require that its current subscribers who upgrade or activate a new smartphone on a two year contract to keep their selected data package for the length of their contract. This is apparently an effort to end a loophole that had previously allowed customers who had a grandfathered unlimited plan to upgrade a line for a feature phone to a new and d…

by Guest Richard Devine- 0 replies

Microsoft has released a new, extremely good looking application for iPhone called Snipp3t. The name doesn't say much, but this is no productivity tool, no game. No, what this is, is a celebrity news application. From Microsoft. Perhaps not the first developer you'd go to for such a thing but it's here and for what it is it looks really nice. Well, it looks really nice so long as you're in the U.S. and can download it, at least. SNIPP3T (pronounced "Snippet") is a Celebrity News app that snips everything you want to know about your favorite celebrities from all over the web and puts it in one place. Subscribe to your favorite celebrity with one click, and the hot…

iPhones 'flaunted' over Android in India, even older ones
by Guest Sam Sabri- 0 replies
Selling older iPhones is Apple's new strategy to gain market share in India. The iPhone 4 was released in June 2010 but is still available and popular in emerging markets like India. Not only can you find the iPhone 4 in India, you'll also find the iPhone 4s that launched in October 2011. 225 million smartphones were sold in India last year. Apple wants a bigger slice of that action and is offering older devices to gain market share. Here's Punit Mathur, vice president of a digital media company who made the switch from a Nexus 4 to an iPhone 4s: "You flaunt an iPhone, but you don't flaunt an Android. An iPhone 5s that would cost 53,500 rupees ($874) is too …

Apple and accessibility: Helping students with dyslexia
by Guest Brian Meersma- 0 replies
Can you imagine not being able to read printed words? What would your life be like if books, newspapers, websites, email, and even signs were all virtually incomprehensible to you? How would you get through the day? For up to one in five people like me with dyslexia these are not hypothetical questions, they are our reality. Yet, thanks to accessibility technologies built into Apple's iPhone, iPad, and Mac, it's a reality that can be challenged. Dyslexia makes reading a simple paragraph, let alone textbooks, a tedious and frustrating process. Spelling and written expression can also be very difficult. Despite this, dyslexia does not impact intellectual ability…

Emberlight will turn your lightbulbs into smart connected lightbulbs
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies
While smart wireless lightbulbs like Philips Hue are all the rage, a new Kickstarter project is aiming to make any lightbulb a smart one. It's called Emberlight, and it's a simple intermediary device that you screw into the E26/27 socket and then screw your lightbulb into. From there, merely leave your switch in the on position and you'll be able to control your lights wirelessly from your phone. Emberlight connects over Wi-Fi, so you don't need a hub. It also includes Bluetooth, so it will be able to see when your phone is or isn't in a room and turn lights on or off accordingly. And like Hue, you can control multiple lights through the app (due for iOS and Android)…
