Instagram's bringing stabilized time-lapse video to iPhone with Hyperlapse
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies
Instagram's second app is coming, and it's called Hyperlapse. The app combines some really intelligent video stabilization with time lapse techniques. It's not unlike the hyperlapse stabilization demoed by Microsoft earlier this month, except that it's coming as an app for your iPhone. Unlike Instagram, which has long-featured filters as a premiere element of the experience, Hyperlapse's only filters are stabilization and speed. Hyperlapse uses the motion data from the gyroscopes and accelerometers built into modern iPhones to extract motion data for the stabilization. A traditional stabilization algorithm (like those built into iMovie on the Mac and Final Cut Pro X …

Simplicam offers home security alternative to Dropcam
by Guest Simon Sage- 0 replies
A new system called Simplicam by Arcsoft promises to be a strong Dropcam competitor thanks to cheaper cloud storage subscriptions and facial recognition alerts. Simplicam has the same simple plug-and-play set-up and mobile app for movement alerts and live monitoring. Facial recognition just lets you know that there's someone in the house, not who they are, but in most cases that's enough. If you snag the $199 version of Simplicam (compatible with both Android and iPhone), it includes a year of 1-day subscription service of the cloud storage service, Closeli, so you can go over footage from the last 24 hours. You can also subscribe to a $49 annual plan instead. By con…

by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

Leading up to the iPhone 6 event we're updating and expanding our series on the history of the iPhone, continuing with the most amazing one yet — the iPhone 4S Nothing about 2011 was normal for Apple. Tim Cook had introduced the Verizon iPhone 4 at the beginning of the year and Apple had finally shipped the white iPhone 4 by spring. But unlike previous years, WWDC 2011 came and went with nary a mention nor a glimpse of a new iPhone. Steve Jobs went on medical leave again, and in August resigned as CEO. On October 4, 2011, Apple's new CEO, Tim Cook, senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, Phil Schiller, and other executives took the stage at a special me…

Every month for many years, we’ve released a number of updates focused on the continuous improvement of customers’ experiences with our technology. Historically, these updates happened at different times during the month, with the security-specific ones occurring on the second Tuesday of each month. Recently, to further streamline, we decided to include more of our non-security updates together with our security updates and begin the global release to customers on the second Tuesday of each month.

Los Angeles' school system ends plan to give all of its students iPads
by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies
The Los Angeles Unified School District, the second largest public school system in the United States, has decided not to move forward with its plans to offer an iPad to every student in the system, due to concerns about the iPad itself as well as how the contract with Apple was handled by school system administrators. The school board of LA United approved a contract with Apple, along with a subcontractor Pearson, just over a year ago to begin the project for $30 million, with plans to expand that contract to $500 million over the next year. LA Unified also planned to spend another $500 million to help expand Internet access in the schools. However, on Monday, the s…

T-Mobile doubles iPad data plan, expands family plan
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies
If you add an iPad to your T-Mobile Simple Choice plan, starting September 3rd T-Mobile will charge you $10-a-month for the privilege and will double your data allotment in the process. The plan creates a duplicate bucket of data reserved for that iPad, up to 5 GB per month. This is in stark contrast to other carriers, where adding a new device, iPad or otherwise, draws from your preexisting bucket of data. It's worth noting that this is a segregated bucket for the tablet — you've got one bucket for your phone (say, a 3 GB T-Mobile plan) and a separate 3 GB for the tablet. In addition to the new iPad plans, T-Mobile's also expanding their family plans. Previously …

Leading up to the iPhone 6 event we're updating and expanding our series on the history of the iPhone, continuing with the more powerful iPhone 3GS Steve Jobs didn't give the WWDC keynote on June 8, 2009. He was away on medical leave. So, a team of Apple executives soldiered on without him. That included Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, Phil Schiller, who's task was to fill the biggest New Balances in the business for what was becoming Apple's biggest business. How to use parental controls on iPhone and iPad: The ultimate guide
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

Parental Controls, also known as Restrictions, allow you to set what your children can and can't access on an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. With Parental Controls, you can lock out Safari, Camera, FaceTime, Siri, AirDrop, CarPlay, the iTunes, iBooks, Podcasts, or App Stores (including in-app purchases), as well as content by age rating, and the ability to make changes to accounts and other app settings. In other words, they're a way to block your child's access to anything and everything you deem inappropriate for them based on their age and sensitivity, and your own best judgement. And they're part of what make Apple devices an ideal computing platform for kids! How t…

Spotlight in iOS 8: Explained
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Spotlight is the name of Apple's system-wide search feature on both the Mac and iOS. With iOS 8, Spotlight is getting some new smarts, including location and context awareness, so it can help you find not only what you're looking for on your iPhone or iPad, but on the web as well. But how does the new Spotlight work? Lighting the spots Originally codenamed Matador, Spotlight was first announced for the Mac alongside OS X Tiger in 2004. It came to the iPhone as part of iOS 3 (iPhone OS 3) in 2009. It was the year after the introduction of the App Store but even in that short amount of time the number of apps people had on their phones had grown to the point where f…

Coin has now changed course and is hoping to earn back trust from customers by offering a free nationwide beta. Yesterday we learned that Coin — the sort of physical digital that aims to replace all the other cards in your wallet — would be shipping soon in limited (and beta) form to those who backed the project. Turns out backers weren't too pleased with Coin's decision and a huge backlash of complaints followed the announcement. Here's an excerpt from a message Coin CEO Kanishk Parashar just sent to backers: "We apologize for our lack of transparency and clarity in our communications to you. You, as our valuable backers, should have been the first to know abo…

Leading up to the iPhone 6 event we're updating and expanding our series on the history of the iPhone, continuing with the faster, less expensive iPhone 3G At WWDC 2008 on June 9, after finalizing the details of the upcoming App Store, and summing up the original iPhone's achievements, the late Steve Jobs dove into the next challenges Apple had to face, the next mountain they had to climb. On the surface, they were obvious even before Jobs bulleted them on stage — 3G, Enterprise, third-party apps, more countries, and more affordable. The software changes came as part of iPhone OS 2.0. The hardware, iPhone 3G. Just one year after launching the iPhone, we're laun…

This is an awesome price. Lexmark printers for ink jet leave a lot to be desired but their Laser printers are excellent and I have had them for years. This price is way under most others, even Amazon at $117. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=28-006-551&nm_mc=EMC-GD082514&cm_mmc=EMC-GD082514-_-index-_-Item-_-28-006-551 You need this code at checkout for price: With Promo Code: EXLPBHE229 And of course "Shipping is free" and that's good because its heavy! I use a cheap black Brother Laser for 96% of my printing and a Lexmark color laser for the rest, oh and a Canon Pixma inkjet for photos.

Summary: The rumor mill says a public preview of the next big Windows release will appear this fall. But don't get fixated by features. This release isn't a "big bang" but is actually just the starting gun for the next stage in a very long race. We already know a little about what will be in what will probably end up being called Windows 9.
