Apple has reportedly cut a deal for Samsung to provide the vast majority of its A-series chips, like the A8 found in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the future. Samsung is said to have a contract for 80 percent of Apple's supply, but delivery is not supposed to being until 2016. A major factor in this supposed deal is the Samsung's ability to mitigate capacity risk, according to The Korea Times: "Apple has designated Samsung as the primary supplier of its next A-series chips powering iOS devices from 2016 as the alliance with GlobalFoundries (GF) enabled Samsung to cut off capacity risk," a source familiar with the deal said. Taiwanese chip maker TSMC will al…

Too early to start thinking about iOS 9? Not at all. Features are already getting pushed, pitched and locked down for next year, so what better time to bring some attention to things that... well... need some attention. "Hey Siri!" is a good one to start with. When your iPhone or iPad is plugged in, and "Hey Siri" is enabled in Settings, you can activate voice control simply by saying those magic words. The problem is, everyone knows those words and every plugged-in iOS 8 device recognizes them. That leads to inopportune activations — mischievous and accidental alike. How could "Hey Siri" be improved? Google's "Okay Google Now" tries to learn your voice; if it hears…

TV sports pundits tend to focus on the predictions they get right, while sweeping past blunders under the rug. But when I asked NFL draft expert and football analyst Daniel “DJ” Jeremiah his best call in a recent draft, he answered, “I’ll tell you my biggest mistake: Russell Wilson.” Wilson, star quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks, threw two touchdowns and over 200 passing yards to win Super Bowl XLVIII last season. But Wilson almost never wore a Seahawks jersey in the first place. “In 2012, I was a scout for the Philadelphia Eagles and really wanted the team to draft Russell at the top of the second round,” said Jeremiah between takes at NFL Network’s headquart…

A new interview with movie and TV writer Aaron Sorkin claims that the official announcement for who will take on the title role in his biopic of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs is "imminent". It also reveals some new details about what we can expect to see in the Sony Pictures film. Leonardo DiCaprio was reportedly first sought out for the role but decided to pass. A few weeks ago, Sorkin seemed to confirm that Christian Bale had agreed to do the part but a few days later it was reported that Bale had turned down the role as well. More recently, Hollywood media outlets claimed that Michael Fassbender was in talk to take on the movie. In his new interview with The Inde…

NSFW is a weekly op-ed column in which I talk about whatever's on my mind. Sometimes it'll have something to do with the technology we cover here on iMore; sometimes it'll be whatever pops into my head. Your questions, comments and observations are welcome. Net neutrality is the simple idea that data on the Internet should be treated equally, regardless of where it comes from or where it goes to. It's a pretty simple idea, and pretty straightforward. So why is it being bludgeoned by both sides in Washington as a political weapon? For several years it was the standing order of the Federal Communications Commission, until earlier this year. A federal appeals court r…

Disney will be bringing their hit console game Disney Infinity 2.0 to mobile devices for the first time before the end of 2014, and the company said it used Apple's new Metal graphics API to help create the port. During a presentation of Disney's upcoming mobile app and website plans on Friday, the company said that the use of Metal allowed for Disney Infinity 2.0 to have near-console level graphics on mobile devices. It will also have multiplayer features, which is something that was not part of the first Disney Infinity mobile game. Finally, Disney Infinity 2.0 will be released for the iPhone for the first time as well as the iPad. Some other Disney mobile and w…

So I think it's fair to say that we've taken a major step back in this latest build of the Windows Technical Preview. Obviously, there are some nice improvements here—and the seismic shift that's happening with OneDrive—but the big news here, perhaps, is that this is the first build that isn't stable or reliable enough to use regularly. And unless this is fixed soon, I may have to take the unusual step of moving back to a previous build, or to Windows 8.1. Before getting to that, there are some things in Build 9879 that I really do like. For example, this is the first build to incorporate some user feedback, though I suspect that the more vocal Windows Insider parti…

It looks like Apple Pay is ushering in a new era for mobile payments, if reports from retailers are a sign of things to come. The New York Times is reporting today that many retailers have seen a substantial increase in mobile payment traffic in the three weeks since Apple's mobile payment platform launched. As far as numbers are concerned, Whole Foods has reported that it has processed more than 150,000 Apple Pay transactions thus far. That's in addition to McDonald's claim that Apple Pay accounted for 50 percent of its mobile payment transactions. Similarly, Walgreens, a launch partner for Apple Pay, said that its mobile payment transactions have doubled since the …

A number of big-name tech companies are teaming up to lobby the Senate to pass legislation that would limit the reach of the NSA's spying activities, Bloomberg reported today. The coalition of tech giants includes the likes of Apple, Google, and Microsoft, among others. The goal of the lobbying is to encourage the Senate to act on issues of NSA spying in advance of the Republican takeover of the chamber next year, as many members of the political party are seen as supportive of government surveillance programs. Addressing the effect of revelations surrounding the extent of NSA spying, Gary Shapiro, CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association which represents the t…

The games that shape you in your childhood tend to linger in your memory long after you finish playing them. I can't open an exploratory game like Gone Home or The Room without thinking of my first stumblings into Myst years before, insisting my dad not leave the room because I was too scared to go alone and too excited to not have someone to talk to. Playing Space Age stirs a very different set of memories — ones founded in explorative delight, or frenetic frustration from just missing the final piece in a boss fight for the fifth time. They trust the player and tease them, compelling them forward with a great narrative all the while confounding them with dastardly pu…

Snapchat has a had a rough few weeks in terms of security. People's photos were allegedly stolen and posted online recently through the use of a third-party apps. Microsoft has unveiled Skype for Web, a browser-based version of the VOIP service. What do you get when you stick Pinterest, Flipboard, Twitter Cards, and the Wirecutter into a blender? I suspect the result might look something like Wildcard, the brainchild of former New York Times designer Khoi Vinh and the other folks behind Coopkanics. Wildcard, released Thursday, combines trending news with featured collections of goods and services to offer you a solution to all your first-world problems. I use that phrase — "first world problems" — rather jokingly, but it's clear that the current audience Wildcard looks to serve is expected to carry a fair amount of disposable income. Underneath trending news searches, you'll find collections of goods to help…

Masque Attack — the abuse of Apple's iOS Enterprise Developer or standard developer systems to try and trick people into installing malware apps on their iPhones or iPads — made for sensational headlines earlier this week, despite it being a threat to relatively few users. In response to Masque Attack, Apple gave iMore the following statement: "We designed OS X and iOS with built-in security safeguards to help protect customers and warn them before installing potentially malicious software," an Apple spokesperson told iMore. "We're not aware of any customers that have actually been affected by this attack. We encourage customers to only download from trusted sources…

It seems that Volvo is becoming the first major brand to take advantage of Google Cardboard, Google's VR-on-the-cheap. The car manufacturer announced that it will soon release an app called 'Volvo Reality' on the App Store that drops users into various virtual driving situations with its new XC90 in an effort to promote sales of the SUV. The app takes users on virtual test drives through different environments at varying times of the day.
