Gooooooal! This week welcomed amazing news for fútbol — and technology. But it didn’t stop there. In honor of a high-flying few days, with big news from around the world, we bring you Weekend Reading. Buckle up. Just in time for the 2014 MLS Cup Conference Finals, a glimpse behind the scenes of Seattle Sounders FC preparation, where technology is tracking team members to ensure they’re in top form. Devices worn by players gather information on each athlete’s energy output, endurance, sleep patterns, nutrition and fatigue. SQL Server stores and makes sense of all of that data. “It provides us a holistic view of the data and enables us to draw powerful insights from it,”…

iCloud Keychain lets you store passwords and credit cards for all your different logins rather easily. While you can always disable iCloud keychain altogether, you can also disable password and credit card saving not only individually, but on a per-device basis, and only for Safari. Perhaps you have an iPad that's used by other people in your home. You may want iCloud Keychain access but don't want Safari saving every single password or credit card number entered on that specific device. Luckily, you can pretty easily do just that! How to disable password or credit card storing on a device specific basis Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. Tap on Safar…

It looks like advertising isn't the only way way to fund your favorite sites anymore. Google announced a new program called Contributor today that allows people to contribute money to participating websites via a monthly subscription to get rid of ads. In typical Google fashion, the service will be a slow rollout, requiring an invitation at first. After you receive an invitation, you'll have the option to buy a subscription that runs between $1 and $3 per month that will go to participating websites in lieu of traditional advertising. Google clearly labels this as an experiment, and that is made even more evident by the slow rollout and relatively small number of …

San Francisco is a new font you'll be seeing a lot more of in the coming months, thanks to its debut on the Apple Watch. Now the font is available for download and installation on your Yosemite-based Mac, thanks to a new project available on Wells Riley's GitHub page. These San Francisco fonts have a special name table with names identical to those of the system fonts. Because the font folder /Library/Fonts takes precedence over the fonts which are in /System/Library/Fonts, these specially crafted fonts are used for the user interface instead of the real system fonts. The original system fonts are not deleted or modified in any way. This only works on Yosemite-…

Square has expanded the reach of its Register software for the iPhone and iPad worldwide. It announced today that the app is now available "even in countries without integrated Square processing." It can now also accept payments from 130 different currencies. Previous to today, Square Register was only available in the US, Canada, and Japan, so this international push is a pretty big deal for the online payment company. Square states, "Already, local sellers from Four Letter Word Coffee in Istanbul to WE Hostel in Sao Paulo are using Square Register software." However, the Square Register app is only available in English, Spanish, French, and Japanese languages. …

Behind the scenes of those intense workouts by the Seattle Sounders FC players, technology is tracking team members to make sure they’re playing at their best. A variety of devices worn by the players gather information on each athlete’s energy output, endurance, sleep patterns, nutrition and fatigue levels. All that tracking generates more than 350 columns of data, which led the team to create its own SQL Server database to house all those datasets. “SQL Server is the place where all the data from different devices meshes together. It provides us a holistic view of the data and enables us to draw powerful insights from it,” says Ravi Ramineni, a performance analyst…

Notebook maker Moleskine has partnered with Adobe to put your sketches in Creative Cloud with a new notebook and app. Much like their Evernote journal, Moleskine's new Creative Cloud product is designed especially to bridge the gap between analogue and digital work. Each page of the notebook has a marker in each corner. A user would draw or sketch on a page as they normally would, then open Moleskine's new app, and tap the big Capture button. The app recognizes the markers, which aid in preprocessing by detecting page orientation, perspective, and any alignment issues. The image is then sent to the Creative Cloud, where you can open it in apps like Photoshop and Ligh…

The movie Reel Steel might have been fairly forgettable, but the two mobile games based on it have enjoyed a fair little following. The team leads from the mobile Reel Steel and Total Recall titles have left Reliance Entertainment in order to form their own studio, Play Motion. And Play Motion's first game sticks with what they know: robots punching other robots. Ironkill has just launched on Android and iOS as a free to play title. Players can collect and upgrade a wide assortment of stylized robots, and then journey across a post-apocalyptic map to battle it out against other robot trainers. With solid graphics and simple controls, Ironkill promises plenty of fun rob…

If you've ever listened to music on shuffle, you've probably hit the point where you'd like to hear more from that album, but then continue on with the shuffling. That's an issue that the newly-released Stringer aims to alleviate, allowing you to easily move around a shuffled list of your entire iTunes library (including iTunes Match music) and make adjustments as you see fit. The concept is rather straightforward, but also quite different than most other iPhone apps. Stringer places your shuffled music into one continuous vertical line. A string, if you will. Each song is presented as a large view of it's album art. If, as you're listening, you decide that you want …

Foxconn, the manufacturer of Apple's devices, including the iPhone and iPad, is about to invest $2.6 billion in a facility in Taiwan dedicated to producing displays for a single client. While the client isn't explicitly named, few companies other than Apple could generate the demand that would require a dedicated display production facility. The plant is expected to begin producing displays by the end of next year, according to Bloomberg: Equipment installation will commence next month with mass production of panels to start by the end of 2015 after an urgent request for exclusive capacity, Sophia Cheng, a public relations representative for Foxconn's display unit I…

The move involves approximately 125,000 seats, writes Greg Myers, vice president of Microsoft Federal, in a blog post. The move will help employees collaborate across each department more efficiently and effectively, Myers says. “As an example, when public health outbreaks and emergencies occur, many disparate operating divisions of HHS are involved in the response efforts. Vainglory made a big splash during Apple's summer event announcing iOS 8 and the new Metal API. It certainly served as a great demonstration of the graphics capability of the new framework for games developers, and now that we've had some time to play around with it, we can tell if it's ultimately good news for the players too. Vainglory is, at its core, a MOBA. That stands for Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, for the uninitiated. Basically, two teams of three players attack down a lane in an effort to take out the opposing side's headquarters. You'll need to chew through waves of small enemies, tough defensive towers, and aggressive enemy players to do so. Along the…

A future release of iOS might just come with an extra app bundled inside: Beats Music. When Apple bought Beats back in May, many wondered what the end game was. And while the headphone business is presently far more lucrative for Beats than their streaming music service, finding it pre-installed on millions of iPhones might just change the calculus. Apple's previous effort at streaming music — iTunes Radio — has so far not really lived up to expectations. Bundling Beats Music with iOS would at the very least elevate Apple's streaming music platform to the status of a default icon in the launcher (something iTunes Radio never had). At the same time, Beats Music suffer…

Apple is now displaying a "Get" button for all free apps in its iOS App Store, replacing the "Free" button. Apple made this change quietly so there's no official word on exactly why it has decided to make this cosmetic alteration in the App Store. The "freemium" business model for apps has been a controversial subject for Apple in the past. In 2013, Apple settled a class action lawsuit that had the company offering compensation for in-app purchases by minors without the permission of their parents. Early in 2014, Apple entered into another agreement with the US Federal Trade Commission over the same issue. Apple still has a "Free" apps category in the App Store an…

Battery should last about a year, and is a standard coin cell that you can pick up just about anywhere.
