If you upgraded your iPhone or iPad to iOS 8.1.1 only to find that your ringtones or text tones had gone missing, you aren't alone. Unfortunately, this seems to be a common problem around iOS update time. However, there are a few ways you can try and get them back, and even better — something you can do to help prevent lost ringtones and text tones from ever bothering you again! 1. Sync with iTunes The easiest solution is to sync ringtones and text tones back from iTunes. Of course, that only works if you've synced them to iTunes in the first place. However, if you normally plug your iPhone or iPad into iTunes in order to sync movies or other content, or you use i…

  2. No more number jokes An old quirk in Windows is going away with the release of Windows 10. Microsoft has revealed that the upcoming release of Windows 10 will include a change that makes the Windows NT kernel jump to version 10.0. While Windows 8.1 was Windows NT 6.3 and Windows 7 was Windows NT 6.1, the numbering scheme will now match both the version and marketing names. Windows 10 Technical Preview builds are currently identified as Windows NT 6.4, but future builds will include the change, and Chinese site ITHome leaked images showing the 10.0 version of Windows 10 last week. The odd numbering scheme originates from Microsoft’s merging of NT…

Dell is now shipping its previously announced $2,500 UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K Monitor through its online store. The display sports the same 5120 X 2880-pixel Ultra HD resolution that we saw on Apple's recent Retina 5K iMac. However, Dell is pricing its monitor-only solution at the same price as Apple's all-in-one, which includes a full computer running OS X Yosemite. The Dell UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K requires two cables and two ports to connect, and even then it's still unclear whether or not a Mac could support it as a single, logical screen at 60 Hz. If not, low refresh and potential tearing down the middle would be deal-breakers for most. The Dell display com…

Sprint is offering their loyal customers some fairly substantial discounts for the holidays, including discounted device leasing, free service, and accessory discounts. Of course, it's Sprint defining "loyal" here, though customers that have been deemed worthy of the title have started receiving emails about the offers. Here's what Sprint's offering… A 16GB iPhone 6 or Samsung Galaxy S5 for just $5 a month and $0 down; normally they're both $20 monthly (that's $360 off over the 2-year course of payments). You can add a new line, pay the remainder of the current month, and then get that line of service free of charge for 12 months, all with unlimited talk, mes…

The biggest shopping day of the year is fast approaching. They call it Black Friday, the day after American Thanksgiving, and while the origin of the name as the point where retailers' balance books shift from being in the red (running a loss) for the year to black (profit!) is dubious (any business that's losing money for 11 out of 12 months probably won't be around for next year's sales), the day still sees numerous retailers across the country offering substantial deals on a wide range of products. What follows are our hand-picked best deals for this year's Black Friday sales. We don't believe in recommending sub-par quality products, regardless of if they're a few …

Ecamm's Call Recorder for FaceTime is a Mac app that does what its name implies. The Mac OS X application records both sides of your FaceTime video calls so you can preserve your FaceTime memories. An added benefit with Call Recorder for FaceTime is that it can also handle recording for phone relay calls. This way, if you get a call on your iPhone and answer it via your Mac thanks to the relay feature of iOS and OS X, you can record audio calls that way as well. Call Recorder adds recording controls to FaceTime on the Mac, capturing both audio and crystal clear video. It also does a great job recording Handoff Phone Relay calls via iPhones. You may not realize it, but the new Apple A8 processor on the latest iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus can handle 4K video playback even though the smaller Apple phone has a native resolution of 1334 X 750 pixels while the larger Plus model has a 1080p Full HD display with 1920 X 1080 pixels. Though you won't get a pixel-for-pixel output on the phones' screens, the A8's ability to handle 4K playback means that users who sideload 4K content would be able to still watch it on their phones. Discovery of the ability to play back 4K content on the phone was reported by TUAW: The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus can play 4K video right out of the box thanks to its A8 chip. The discovery…

U.S. District Judge Denise Cote had approved Apple's agreement to settle its case where the iBooks-seller was accused of conspiring with five different publishers to raise e-book pricing for customers. The $450 million settlement had received preliminary approval back in August, and now the judge has fully approved it asking Apple to pay $400 million to as many as 23 million iBooks customers and $50 million to attorneys. As was reported by Reuters: During a hearing in Manhattan, U.S. District Judge Denise Cote approved what she called an "unusual" accord. It calls for Apple to pay $400 million to as many as 23 million consumers if the company's appeal of a ruli…

Square will support Apple Pay at some point next year, according to its founder, Jack Dorsey. Dorsey reiterrated comments from earlier this year in which he said that Square aimed to accept all forms of payment, and that includes Apple Pay. While some have tried to play up Apple Pay as a rival of Square, Dorsey said he disagrees. From CNNMoney: "We're not building a credit card. We're not building a payment device. We're building a [cash] register, and this register accepts all these forms of payments," Dorsey told CNN in an interview. Of course, supporting Apple Pay would require new, NFC-compatible hardware from Square. No specific date for support was g…

Quick, what's your walking posture like? Are you moseying around with your hands in your pockets, or are you head down towards your smartphone? Are you just doing it all wrong? That's what Arki aims to fix by using motion tracking for more than just counting steps. The Kickstarter campaign, which has been up for just over a week and is already closing in on their $100,000 goal, is geared around building a fitness tracker that uses data about how you move and the ideal walking posture to get you moving not just more, but moving more smartly. Of course, as with all Kickstarter projects there's a bit of overwhelming optimism and some pie-in-the-sky ideas here, and the b…

  23. If you're following along with the development of Windows 10, you know that the current Windows Technical Preview builds are geared towards businesses and tech enthusiasts. But in early 2015, Microsoft will release a Consumer Preview for Windows 10, and those builds will provide a better look at many new end user features. This week, the first Consumer Preview builds allegedly leaked online, so here's a quick peek. These leaks come via China, which isn't all that unusual, but they come from a site called IT Home, which is. The information here is culled from two articles on that site (this one and then this one). And since this source is unknown, you should take thi…

  24. It may seem like an esoteric subject, but the recent rumors about Microsoft changing the version number of Windows 10 are true: In this release, the software giant will align the name of the product with the version number, the first time it's done so since the mid-1990s. And that could impact application and even web site compatibility in the new OS. Which is of course the reason that Microsoft hasn't made this kind of change in so long. In the early days of Windows, things were easy: Windows 3 was indeed version 3.0 of the OS, and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 was—wait for it—version 3.11. But that all changed with the release of Windows 95, which was originally dev…
