Late last week, we reported that GT Advanced's creditors had requested an extension in the hearing on Apple's settlement with the sapphire manufacturer. Well, as the saga continues, it looks as though those same creditors are getting their wish, as they will be allowed to take a look at Apple documents under a protective court order, the Wall Street Journal reported today. The review follows news of a settlement deal that would see GT Advanced paying Apple $439 million as it sells off its sapphire furnaces to cover loans from Cupertino. The settlement was originally set to be heard by a judge last week, but was delayed at the request of the creditors. GT Advanced was…

If you bought stock in Apple when Tim Cook became CEO in August 2011, you have had a solid return on your investment since that time. The company's market capitalization reached a new high of $700 billion on Monday before finally pulling back a bit in final trading. That means Apple's market capitalization has doubled since Cook began running the company. While some financial analysts may have had doubts about Apple's future when its co-founder Steve Jobs passed away in October 2011, that's certainly not the case anymore. Apple's highly successful launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus earlier this year has corresponded to a 24% percent increase in Apple's stock pr…

It appears that both Yahoo and Microsoft are both lobbying Apple to try and replace Google as the default search engine in Safari. Apple's deal with Google is set to expire early next year, and both Microsoft and Yahoo apparently feel that this is the right time to try to grab a lucrative deal with Apple out from under Mountain View. Both companies have reportedly held talks with Apple SVP Eddy Cue, according to The Information: Google has always been the default search engine in Apple's browser on the iPhone and iPad as well as on its desktops and laptops starting years earlier. But that deal is up for renewal in early 2015, sources tell The Information, and Yahoo …

Remember that fancy new feature that allows you to search every tweet ever posted that Twitter announced last week? Well if you're one of the many users of third-party Twitter apps, prepare to be disappointed: Twitter's new search API won't be open to third-party clients, much to the frustration of developers. The move shouldn't come as much of a surprise given that Twitter has been on a long quest to seemingly eliminate third-party applications altogether, but it is still disheartening nonetheless. What makes the iPhone 6's display striking is that Apple has improved the application for bonding the glass to the display from the last generation iPhone 5s. The latest report examines the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 6 displays under a microscope and finds that the iPhone 6 looks more pleasing because the display is closer to the glass. In turn, this results in a screen that's more vibrant with deeper blacks and better contrast. According to retinal neuroscientist Bryan Jones: So, why does this display look so good? It turns out that what is different, like the iPhone 5 vs. the iPhone 4 is the proximity of the pixels to the glass in the iPhone 6 compared with the…

Social bulletin board app Yik Yak has recently been updated to bring better notifications, a new card design, and an easier upvote feature to allow you to highlight what you like. Rather than sharing content with people you know like other social networks, Yik Yak's claim to fame is that you can connect and share with others around you without requiring you to know them or be connected to them. The app is now updated to version 2.1.1 and is optimized for Apple's latest smartphones. Yik Yak brings the following new features: Double-Tap to Upvote: It's not a trick! T-Mobile took a big step forward today in the realm of transparency over customer data allotments and throttling. A statement released by the FCC indicates that T-Mobile will begin providing a link to a speed test that will provide accurate results for users who have already been throttled for the month, rather than displaying potential network speeds as it currently does. In addition, the magenta carrier said it would be clearer about data throttling in its text alerts once users have gone over their high speed data cap for the month. The reason for the agreement is a reaction to a step that T-Mobile took earlier this year by exempting speed tests from customer data…

Betaworks has launched a new project and app called [HASHTAG]#Homescreen[/HASHTAG]. The app allows you to share your Home screen with other iPhone users, while the website allows you to view shared screens and discover new apps. The app is very straight forward. After granting it permission to access your photos, [HASHTAG]#Homescreen[/HASHTAG] scans your library for screenshots, uploading them to the website. You can also Tweet your Home screen, open the upload in Safari, and confirm #Homescreen's app detection. The app detection is the most interesting part of the [HASHTAG]#Homescreen[/HASHTAG]. The project detects the apps present in a given screenshot, and will…

The city of Cupertino, Calififornia has posted a new ariel image of Apple's upcoming Campus 2 building that's currently under construction. The photo, supplied by Apple, was taken at a slightly different angle than a similar image taken from a drone earlier in November. The "spaceship" design is clearly seen in the new photo, which will hold 12,000 employees inside over 2.8 million square feet. According to the City of Cupertino's schedule, Campus 2 will complete its street utilities and demolition work by the end of 2014, and earthwork will end sometime in the middle of 2015. The actual construction phase started in mid-2014 and is scheduled to be completed by the e…

The Apple Pay system has quietly added another US bank to its list of supported institutions. Commerce Bank, which has branches in a number of states, mostly in the Midwest, is now listed on Apple's support site, but just for its MasterCard. While Commerce Bank also has a Visa credit card, it is apparently not included in Apple Pay. The bank itself has not yet officially announced its support of Apple Pay, but it has now become the 17th banking organization to join Apple's payment system included as part of iOS 8, along with the MasterCard, Visa and American Express credit card companies. 15. Microsoft says that those testing the Windows Technical Preview on the default slow ring will now be prompted to download Windows 10 build 9879, the third milestone release of the pre-release OS. But here's the weird bit: According to the firm, fully 90 percent of testers are in that slow ring. I'm curious why that's so. But in this case it worked out well for everyone: As originally delivered, build 9879 was incredibly buggy and unreliable, and of course it was the first build to revert to the more limited Windows 7-style OneDrive integration that will become the norm in the shipping product. But since only 10 percent of the people testing pre-release Windows 10 b…

According to reports, British Telecom is in early talks with Telefonica to purchase O2, the same mobile operator it released back in 2001. Not only has BT set its sights on O2, but the UK's largest network EE has also been offered in a separate deal. BT has confirmed to Spanish press that Telefonica could end up with a 20 percent stake in the company, should a deal go through. The Telegraph notes that this would value the deal at around £10 billion. A BT spokesperson commented on today's reports, noting that BT is also interested in a second network operator (believed to be EE): "We have received expressions of interest from shareholders in two UK mobile networ…

Following the product (RED) takeover of the App Store earlier today, Apple has announced a broader involvement in the campaign leading up to World AIDS Day. On Black Friday, November 28, Apple will be giving out special product (RED) gift certificates in the U.S., a percentage of which will be donated to AIDS research. On Cyber Monday, December 1, Apple will donate a portion of every retail and online sale. It's a genius idea for an amazing cause. Kudos to the teams at Apple for putting it together. Currently, QSV is only supported on Windows but we hope to bring this to Linux users in the future. Thanks to the good people at Intel for making this possible! Apple's own GarageBand, for example, is introducing a new (GarageBand) RED Loop Pack, available as a $0.99 in-app purchase (IAP). 100% of the proceeds will go towards fighting AIDS. Nearly everything about Brian Townsend’s job reads like science fiction. Put simply: He works in a room nicknamed “The Vault,” and he creates photographs of products that don’t yet exist. When Townsend does his job, you get a Surface tablet that’s real in every way but for one: It doesn’t yet exist in three dimensions. Not yet, anyway. If you’re confused, believe me, you’re not alone. Townsend needed to explain his work to me several times before it finally stuck. He was patient, even enthusiastic in doing so, which kinda goes against the sci-fi stereotype. Brian Townsend, it turns out, is also kind of in awe of his job. “It’s an interesting blend between technical …

Earlier this week the CEO of an anti-virus company wrote a "guest editorial" on a popular technology website, saying it was time for Apple to "open up" and — wait for it — allow anti-virus software on the iPhone and iPad. The premise is self-serving and the headline spit-take inducing, and it's absolutely not worth rewarding negative attention seeking with attention. However, it is important to address the fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) the "guest editorial" is trying to spread. The CEO starts off by bringing up a Xsser as an example of why we should be concerned about the security of iOS. Xsser is a type of spyware that can steal data from iPhones and iPads — if t…

NSFW is a weekly op-ed column in which I talk about whatever's on my mind. Sometimes it'll have something to do with the technology we cover here on iMore; sometimes it'll be whatever pops into my head. Your questions, comments and observations are welcome. I've been running on fewer cylinders than usual this week.
