iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus release delayed in China
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
It looks like Chinese Apple fans waiting to get their hands on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will have to wait a bit longer, as seems that Apple will miss the September 19 release date in that country. Apple apparently caught the three major national carriers, as well as their own store managers, off guard with news of the delay. While no reason for the delay was given, it likely has to do with Chinese regulatory approval, according to the New York Times: The move set off consternation among Apple's partners in China, as well as with consumers who had been eagerly awaiting the introductions. Apple did not explain the delay, executives at the carriers said, but it a…

Apple's iPhone 6, Apple Watch event now available on YouTube!
by Guest Phil Nickinson- 0 replies

While the livestream more or less was a horror show (and overdubbed in Chinese) for many of us, YouTube is forever. Or close enough. And Tuesday's iPhone 6 and Apple Watch event is now available there, which means a couple things. For one, it's perhaps yet another example of a more open Apple. For another: You could fire it over to your TV on, say, Chromecast, in addition to the Apple.com repeat. We've yet to watch it to see what might have been edited out from the live version — hey, it's happened — so sing out in the comments if you spot anything. Source: Continue reading...

Apple has snagged Gap marketing exec Marcela Aguilar to lead the company's global marketing communications efforts as a director. And now, Aguilar will be joining Apple as it launches its first fashion accessory on the market: the Apple Watch. Aguilar is the latest high profile hire for Apple as it tries to recruit executives from fashion, tech, watchmakers, health and fitness markets, and more. Did you miss Apple's foray into the wearables world yesterday with the Apple Watch, long rumored as the iWatch? Well, if you want to relive that announcement along with Apple's introduction of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, but don't want to sit through an entire keynote feature Tim Cook and company, then comedian Jonathan Mann has you covered with Apple Watch: The Musical. The video, a little over 3 minutes, pokes fun at Apple's woes with Internet streaming connectivity and some of the untried and non-proven functionality behind the Apple Watch. The ending may be a little bit NSFW, but if you're curious and need a little bit of entertainment, we're re-posting the v…

Two German technology blogs have leaked screenshots of the upcoming Windows 9 Technical Preview, which is billed as build 9834. The shots depict the new Start menu, floating Modern app windows, a notification center, multiple desktop workspaces, a flat new design for the desktop, and many other changes that we've long expected. While it's unclear which was first, or whether the two sites cross-posted simultaneously, the shots are the same on both sites, Winfuture.de and Computerbase.de. Here they are, with commentary. Here are the first 10 of 20 shots, with commentary. Setup. Nothing super-notable here, except for one thing: There is no Windows codename or versi…

Leaked Windows 9 screenshots have surfaced previously, but this time we’re getting a closer look at how the desktop is transforming in the future release of Windows. German sites Computer Base and WinFuture have obtained 20 photos of what appears to be the "Windows Technical Preview," which is expected to be made available later this month or in early October. The screenshots, from a Windows build provided to close Microsoft partners, provide an even closer look at the new Start Menu, and some obvious changes to the Windows taskbar. Firstly, there’s a new search icon next to the Start button on the taskbar, alongside what appears to be a button for t…

After you’ve finished up with a two-year smartphone contract, one of the easiest ways to save money is to keep your old device and bring it to a compatible carrier with a lower monthly cost. But if your device is carrier locked — and if you bought it on contract from one of the big four carriers, it probably is — you’ll need to unlock it first. Last week Congress passed a bill that requires carriers to unlock eligible devices, although the carriers were already doing that voluntarily in some situations. On Friday, August 1, Barack Obama signed the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act into law. So now that’s it’s officially legal, how do you go abou…

OK Go says Apple ripped off their music video
by Guest Simon Sage- 0 replies
Yesterday's iPhone 6 and Apple Watch event kicked off with a fancy video about perspective, but rock band OK Go says the whole thing is a riff on their work shooting The Writing's on the Wall. Apple used the same director and production company as OK Go did for their music video. Band manager Andy Gershon claims they met in April with Apple with the idea of the video, hoping to collaborate at some point. Apple turned them down, so OK Go went ahead and made their own music video, but obviously Apple felt amply inspired by the concept. Given, Apple's video is a one-off affair and not particularly high profile in the grand scheme of things (it's not like the techni…

Apple Pay and security: What you need to know
by Guest Nick Arnott- 0 replies

Yesterday Apple announced Apple Pay, a payment mechanism that will be available on the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and Apple Watch. While the convenience of such a feature is tempting, how do we know if we can trust it? To answer this, let's take a look at what we know about Apple Pay's security so far. NFC The iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and Apple Watch will all include NFC chips. NFC — which stands for near-field communication — is a set of standards that mobile devices can use to communicate with each other via radio communications. It's somewhat similar to Bluetooth LE but, among other differences, only works over very short distances (generally 10 cm or less), …

Apple's poor iPhone 6-Apple Watch live stream event may not have been a capacity issue
by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies
People who tried to check out Apple's live stream of its iPhone 6-Apple Watch press event on Tuesday were met with images such as the one above, along with other issues, but the problems may not have been based purely on a lack of Internet capacity, according to one analyst. According to StreamingMediaBlog's Dan Rayburn, several separate issues cropped up that caused Apple's live stream to be broken for much of the event. One problem was due to some special code Apple put into the live stream's website at Apple.com. Rayburn states: Unlike the last live stream Apple did, this time around Apple decided to add some JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) code to the app…

Cricket raises data allotments for new and existing customers — get 10GB for just $55
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies

U.S. prepaid carrier Cricket is, for a limited time, raising the roof on their data allotments. New customers that sign up between September 13 and an as-yet undetermined cut-off date will get anywhere from 500MB to 5GB more LTE data on their plan for the same amount. Existing customers will also get more data on their plans automatically, and they won't have to pay anything more for it. Here's how it breaks down. Cricket's $40 Basic Plan is doubling from 500MB to 1GB. The $50 Smart Plan is getting an extra 500MB as well, going from 2.5GB to a round 3GB. But if you're on the $60 Pro Plan, you're doubling from 5GB to a whopping 10GB. With all of these plans you can sa…

Expanding technology education to turn the tide of rising youth unemployment
by Guest Lori Forte Harnick- 0 replies

Despite pockets of recovery in the global economy, worldwide unemployment continues to rise, particularly among youth between the ages of 15 and 24. In the 2014 Global Employment Trends report, “Risks of a Jobless Recovery,” the International Labour Organization states that the global youth unemployment rate rose to 13.1 percent in 2013, resulting in 74.5 million unemployed young people around the world. This fact underscores the reason that, as we enter the third year of our global, companywide Microsoft YouthSpark initiative, we are steadfast in our commitment to empower young people to do more and achieve more…for themselves, for their families and for their communi…

It’s hard to imagine that we are already three-fourths of the way through 2014—at least as measured by Microsoft Patch Tuesdays. Today, Microsoft released four new security bulletins, but only one of them is Critical. Guess which one? Yes. Internet Explorer. Once again Microsoft’s web browser takes center stage as the most crucial of the Patch Tuesday security bulletins. Microsoft resolved a grand total of 42 separate vulnerabilities this month, but 37 of those 42 are addressed in MS14-052—the cumulative update for Internet Explorer. One of the flaws fixed by MS14-052 is publicly known and actively under attack in the wild, which is why this security bulletin is Critic…

According to the Daily Dot, nearly 5 million usernames and passwords associated with Gmail accounts have been leaked on a Russian Bitcoin forum. Here's what you should know. The list has since been taken down, and there's no evidence that Gmail itself was hacked—just that these passwords have been leaked. Most sources are saying that lots of the information is quite old, so chances are they were leaked long ago—though others are claiming 60% of the passwords are still valid (not to mention really, really horrible). To check if your password was one of the leaked, plug your Gmail address into this tool (which also checks against recent Yandex and Mail.ru leaks). …

Premium Philips headphones come with Lightning support for iPad and iPhone
by Guest Rich Edmonds- 0 replies

Philips has unveiled a new pair of headphones specifically designed for iOS hardware, including the iPhone 6 and iPhones 6 Plus. Taking cues from the Fidelio M1 headphones, the new sound producers – Fidelio M2L - come with support for the lightning connection, rather than the usual 3.5mm audio jack, which enables Philips to pump out higher quality sound. The price tag will set purchasers back by €249.99 ($320). While the Fidelio M2L have 24-bit Digital to Analog Conversion (DAC) and amplification inside, the iPhone 6 is still limited to 16-bit files, meaning any 24-bit audio files loaded will be downsampled. These are also premium headphones (just take a look at that…
