Apple is attempting to get a federal appeals court to overturn last year's judgment on Apple's role in ebook price fixing. The ruling saw, among other things, an external antitrust monitor installed at Apple, something that the company fought against. Apple SVP Eddy Cue, who negotiated deals with publishers for the iBookstore, has now spoken about the case, and why Apple is fighting so hard to overturn the ruling. Cue says that the rise in ebook prices is not evidence of collusion, according to Fortune: "Is it a fact that certain book prices went up?" asks Cue. "Yes. If you want to convict us on that, then we're guilty. I knew some prices were going to go up, but he…

Sprint has fired its latest salvo against AT&T and Verizon Wireless. It is offering to chop the bill prices for customers of both carriers by half in a new promotion that begins on Friday, December 5. On that day, current AT&T and Verizon customers can go to Sprint's website to upload a copy of their current bill. Then they have to go to their nearest Sprint store with a copy of that bill and all of the phones on their account, where a store representative will then give them a plan with unlimited talk and text and a data plan that matches what they currently get for half the price. What's the catch? You have to turn in your old phones and pay either the f…

When you double-click on a document in the Mac's Finder, an application will automatically open it. But different apps can open the same kind of documents, and somewhere down the road, you may want to change the default opening behavior of specific document types. How can you control which app opens your document? Double-clicking documents elicits pretty reliable behavior on the Mac: an app will automatically open and load the document so you can view it. When you only have the apps your Mac came with, or maybe a few extras, this isn't so bad: You can pretty much expect the Mac to do what you want to when you double-click. But maybe you've installed a new music ap…

Or so it says: I can't seem to get the update installed on my desktop PC, and I would need to test the fix for a few days at least before I felt sure it was finally fixed. If you are running the Windows Technical Preview and have installed the latest build, you'll find KB3020114 available today in Windows Update. According to the Microsoft support web site, this update fixes the problem I've been having for the past two weeks: "The Explorer.exe process continuously crashes and restarts after you upgrade to Windows …

A class-action lawsuit brought against Apple over restrictions placed on the iPod will begin tomorrow, with emails and video of the late Steve Jobs taking a center stage. The suit alleges that Apple used their market position in digital music to block competition and strengthen its monopoly by forcing customers to purchase music from the iTunes Store if they used an iPod, a practice which Apple has since discontinued. Emails and videotaped testimony from Jobs will be used in support of the plaintiffs' case, according to the New York Times: Mr. Jobs's emails and videotaped deposition taken before his death, plaintiffs' lawyers say, will portray him as planning to bre…

  14. Back in the ‘90s, Clip Art took over Word and PowerPoint files thanks to the thousands of office workers and students who used the images as a way to "improve" their documents. These days there are a large number of free images available on the web, and Microsoft is recognizing this by killing off its Clip Art portal in recent versions Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. "The Office.com Clip Art and image library has closed shop," explains Microsoft’s Doug Thomas. "Usage of Office’s image library has been declining year-to-year as customers rely more on search engines." While most references to Clip Art disappeared with Office 2013, users were able to insert the old-sch…

Tomorrow, December 1st, is officially World AIDS day, and just as it has done in recent years, Apple is raising awareness for AIDS relief by changing the color of its logo from white to red at its retail stores. According to Mashable, Australia is the first to see the switch: [The Sydney Flagship] is the first store in the world to light up in a show of commitment to the (RED) AIDS initiative, that is fighting for an AIDS-free future. Apple will then change the colour of its logo across key stores in Japan, Hong Kong, China, Europe and the United States, as the various timezones tick into Monday. Apple has been a big supporter of AIDS research, and frequen…

There's no such thing as perfection. We strive for it. We seek it. But we can never find it. Because everything has its advantages and disadvantages, its good points and bad. Everything is a compromise. Knowing that, understanding that, the trick becomes finding the best compromise. For me, for a few years, that's been a 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro at home, and a 13-inch MacBook Air for travel. But now that's changed. Now I'm typing this on an airplane, on a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro. So, why? My first modern Mac laptop was a 17-inch MacBook Pro. I was working as a graphic designer at the time and I wanted all the pixels. Lugging it around was a pain — literally, in my…

While iOS 8 and Family Sharing offer a lot of flexibility when it comes to sharing purchases, it seems to be causing some errors in terms of updating and downloading free apps for some people. These apps all seem to have one thing in common: they aren't Family Sharing compatible. However, since they're free, the issue can be quite irritating and shouldn't be happening at all. Luckily, there's a workaround you can try in order to bypass the issue, at least until Apple can come up with a permanent fix. After the late Apple co-founder's death several years ago, Steve Jobs didn't just leave a lasting legacy behind, but he continues to build this legacy posthumously. Since his passing, the United States Patent and Trademark Office has awarded Jobs an additional 141 patents, taking the total number to 458. Essentially, Jobs has collected a third of his patents after his passing. As documented by the MIT Technology Review: Altogether, a third of the 458 patented inventions and designs credited to Jobs have been approved since he died. The first patent Jobs won was in 1983 for the Personal Computer. Among his newest patents awarded since his death is the glass…

Sometimes I'm having a conversation on iMessage and the person — or one of the people in a group — I'm conversing with says something so funny, so profound, so touching, or so important I just want to favorite it so they'll know, and so that I'll be able to find it again in the future when I want or need to see it again. Right now, I can't. But maybe iOS 9 could change that? It's become something of a joke in my regular conversations — we'll resign ourselves to sending a star emoji. It conveys the symbolism of a favorite, if very loudly, and the frustration that the feature doesn't yet exist, but it doesn't help us find the messages later. (Search in Messages isn't qui…
