However, the highly anticipated desktop version of Cortana for Windows 10 is not yet included in the Windows Technical Preview, but that didn’t stop WinBeta from scoring some time with it on a Windows 10 machine. The company has announced that search improvements on their service will start rolling out this week to both platforms for US residents. Facebook says: With a quick search, you can get back to a fun video from your graduation, a news article you've been meaning to read, or photos from your friend's wedding last summer. If you want to search using phrases like "My friends who live in New York," you still can. Your search results are personalized an…

Apple CEO Tim Cook met with the Lu Wei, the head of China's internet regulator, on Wei's recent visit to the United States. While specific details of the meeting haven't been disclosed, it does appear that Cook showed Wei the Apple Watch: From Bloomberg: Lu Wei, minister of the Cyberspace Administration of China, visited the companies' offices, according to the report by China.com.cn, which is under the State Council. The post didn't elaborate on the reasons for Lu's visits or the dates. The report included photos of Lu with Apple CEO Tim Cook, who appears to be showing him a wristwatch-like device. Handoff is the cornerstone of Apple's Continuity feature — a way to make your iPhone, iPad, and Mac integrate and work better together. It lets you start an activity on one device and pick up right where you left off on another device. But... sync has done that for years, hasn't it? What makes Handoff better and more convenient? Let's break it down. Sync works by pushing data — like email or messages — from the cloud down to all your devices, or by pushing changes — like bookmarks and documents — from one of your devices up to the cloud, then to all your other devices. As such, if you get an email on your iPhone, you can respond to that email from your Mac. If you crea…

The Typo 2 keyboard add-on accessory for the iPhone 5 and 5s that launched earlier this year now has a bigger brother made for the iPhone 6. The accessory is now on sale on Typo's website for $99, although the company is showing that new orders won't ship until December 15. The design of the new Typo 2 keyboard for the iPhone 6 model is supposed to be based on Apple's software keyboard for the phone. You may remember that the first version of the Typo was the subject of a lawsuit from BlackBerry, which claimed that the company used its trademark QWERTY keyboard design. In a new interview with Re/code, Typo's CEO Laurence Hallier would not comment on the ongoing legal…

Oddly enough, this is a question I'm asked very regularly: If one were to participate in the Windows Technical Preview, would they be able to upgrade to the final, RTM version of Windows 10 when that becomes available? This week, Microsoft actually answered that question with a qualified yes, which is somewhat surprising in its own right. But my advice is to not worry about such things: When the RTM version of Windows 10 comes out, you'll want to do a clean install anyway. The background: On December 5, someone asked Microsoft's Gabe Aul—he's emerged as the face of the Windows Technical Preview—whether testers would be "able to update to the RTM version [of Windows …

The Home button on your iPhone 5s provides two main functions; it serves as a way to authenticate Touch ID and more important, as a way for you to return to your Home screen, exit apps, access multitasking, and more. The good news is that it'll cost you far less than a new iPhone if you're out of warranty! What you need to know about Touch ID and Home button replacements When the iPhone 5s was released, we quickly realized that the Touch ID sensor cable itself was tied to the logic board.
