Editor's desk: My community
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

I had an odd moment of lucidity a couple of hours ago while recording tomorrow's episode of The TV Show with my friend Dave Wiskus. We were talking about HBO's True Detective and I was recounting how I watched most of it on the plane ride to and from San Francisco for WWDC 2014, and how we had on-board Wi-Fi on the way out but not the return trip. I'd never had it on Air Canada before but after having had it I instantly felt cut-off and disconnecting when I no longer had it. Today it occurred to me that a large part of the reason for that feeling was community. My community exist online and becoming disconnected from it I can only equate to walking out of my hut and sudde…

Happy 10th birthday British (and French and German) iTunes Store!
by Guest Richard Devine- 0 replies
Today, June 15, marks the 10th birthday of the iTunes Store in the UK, France and Germany. Having already been launched in the U.S. the year before, Apple's first international expansion saw the trio of European countries become the first non-Americans to have access to its online media catalog. But perhaps more importantly it marked the beginning of a serious change in how media buyers got their content. And the rest, as they say, is history. We take for granted today how easy it is to buy our favorite media content. Be it on our iPhone or iPad, Mac, Windows PC or Apple TV, buying music, TV shows, movies and books takes just a few clicks and we can get it pretty muc…

While Jim Dalrymple of The Loop was away vacationing, our own Peter Cohen got to play — by filling in for Jim on the Amplified podcast. Here's the official blurb and a link to the show, which turned out terrifically well. Dan Benjamin is joined by Peter Cohen of iMore.com to talk about the future of Apple, working in Appe retail, predictions for hardware in 2014 (iWatch, Apple TV, Thunderbolt displays), and more. Is the iWatch a certainty? Will we see Apple TV's with games? Listen to find out. Amplified 99: Like Hodor with a Better Vocabulary Continue reading...

Microsoft XP Professional OEM license that came with sticker pasted over the OEM machine
by Guest Jdugs- 0 replies
Hi I have a question regarding legitimate usage of Microsoft XP Professional OEM license with sticker pasted over HP machines. I bought a few such old desktops from a local vendor few months back. These machines have Microsoft XP Professional sticker pasted over the desktop body (the sticker also mentions that the license is not to be sold separately). I also formatted the machines and installed XP professional on the machines once again and activated the XP online using the key pasted over the desktop. My Vendor had told me that these are OEM licenses and they go along with the desktop on which they have been installed. If the desktop is sold to anyone, it is l…

Win XP blue screen
by Guest RichardLow- 0 replies

Hi I reinstalled XP to my laptop as it keeps showing the blue screen or the screen will just hang after a while. After reinstalling, the same happens so I thought it could be a motherboard problem. I tried with a 'safe mode' login and the laptop doesn't hang and no blue screen. So, I believe there must be some software problem. Can anybody help to point out what could be the problem or troubleshoot the issue? Many thanks in advance. Regards Richard Continue reading...

by Guest LilianHaeger- 0 replies

screen is fine and I put it to sleep, then I touch the space bar and the mouse to wake it up and that annoying black line is on the left. It is like the screen shifted because it hides the buttons as I press "windows C" to turn it off or put it to sleep. It is NOT the resolution, if I restart it, it goes away. How does it get there in the 1st place and how do I get rid of it? It drives me crazy! Continue reading...

by Guest ConnorSmoot- 0 replies

I have recently upgraded my PC with an Asus z97-a motherboard and Intel-i5 4 core processor. After reinstalling Windows 7, I was able to get a signal from my geforce gtx 660 video card for a few hours. After installing several Windows updates, however, I am unable to use my video card without receiving a NO INPUT DETECTED from both of my monitors. My video card is also not appearing in Device Manager nor BIOS and is instead using Intel HD Graphics. Due to the video card not being detected, I am unable to install the latest drivers for my card and I have no idea what to try next. I have also made sure that my current power supply is supplying enough power to the card. Powe…

MYSTERY USB MOUSE(S) INTERMITTENTLY WORKING NOW STOPPED WORKING
by Guest susiedancer- 0 replies

This is an ongoing problem. I have been all over google, microsoft forums, and even the 4 year olds on youtube. Nothing works so far. Here is the situation: Dell Insprion 64-bit about 4 years old, Windows 7. Was using my original infallable Dell USB corded mouse. Then it started to only work intermittently, and stop for periods of time, on and off. So I bought a new (cheap) wireless mouse and it would jump around crazy and/or delay uselessly so I set it aside. Then the Dell worked again just fine for a period of time. Then it stopped. So I bought another (cheap) corded mouse. It worked great until it, too started working only intermittently and stopping for p…

Recently I downloaded a virus that did various things to my computer. After looking online for help, I decided to clean the registry of my computer. Downloaded Registry Reviver, ran it. Downloaded CCleaner, ran it. The virus seems to be out of my computer. I ran malwarebytes anti-malware program and did a full computer scan. The program did whatever it needed to. My computer is still doing some strange things. I can't search for programs in the Start menu only other files and folders associated with the program come up, the folders in the start menu all programs all say empty. Another problem is that when I copy programs from Program Files (x86) to the des…

I have a gmail account and every time I try to open an attached photo that someone sends to me, I get the message "virus scan failed." I even tried sending a photo to myself and it did the same thing. I know the photo I sent to myself doesn't have a virus attached, because it's on my desktop and has passed daily virus scans for weeks. I tried all the suggestions given by Google on this, but nothing has worked. Any suggestions? Continue reading...

Here's my current config settings for my browser: Code: Selection Path Priority Status ------------------------------------------------------------ 0 /usr/bin/google-chrome-stable 200 auto mode 1 /usr/bin/google-chrome-stable 200 manual mode * 2 /usr/bin/iceweasel 70 manual mode You can see that chrome has higher priority and has auto mode with it, so any links that I touch will open the iceweasel browser. But Wireshark's links opens up to Google. Is there a way to giveiceweasel higher priority and let it enable auto mode. I've tried using the auto function, says…
