8 years ago today Steve Jobs put sneaker to Macworld stage in what was arguably the greatest keynote in his and Apple's history of great keynotes. Following the industry-changing Mac and the iPod, Jobs claimed Apple was going to introduce 3 more revolutionary products — a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and revolutionary phone, and a breakthrough internet communicator. He asked if we got it. We did. We got the hell out of it. Not 3 products but 1. The iPhone. Instantly everything that came before was rendered obsolete. Google pivoted on a dime and went from targeting Android at BlackBerry and Windows Mobile to targeting Apple. Palm rebooted with webOS and the Pre.…

New details have been revealed for Microsoft’s Windows 10 browser, codenamed Spartan. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans for its next operating system have told The Verge Spartan will include “features not found in rival browsers.” For instance, Spartan will support inking -- the ability for users to make notes on web pages with a stylus and share them with other users. The inking service will be powered by Microsoft’s OneDrive cloud storage, allowing users the ability to access, edit and share the web pages through any browser across multiple platforms. The new browser will also come with Cortana digital assistant integration. Cortana allows users to seek …

OtterBox kicked off a new series of iPhone 6 cases this week called Resurgence, which includes an embedded battery. In addition to providing respected protection, the 2,600 mAh battery should provide two full charges while still providing access to the Lightning connector and headphone jack. The Resurgence cases boast a smart charging system which shuts off the backup battery once it detects your iPhone 6 is at full capacity. The Resurgence case for the iPhone 6 will be available soon for $99.95 in black, red, grey, and green. Here's the press release with more information. OTTERBOX REVEALS RESURGENCE POWER CASE FOR IPHONE 6 AT CES 2015 LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5, 201…

It wouldn't be CES without a gathering of mobile editors talking about the show, and we got it live for all to see. Watch as Phil of Android Central, Rene of iMore, Dan of Windows Central, and Mark of Laptopmag and Tom's Guide get together for a few minutes and talk about everything that has been seen and done here in Las Vegas. The general theme this year seems to be interoperability and the increasingly vague "Internet of Things" but with all of that noise comes a strong signal for things to come. It's becoming way less about which single device is best, and way more about which combination of platform and experience gets you what you need. Continue…

My 14 year old came to me last week with a dead mouse in his hands. No, not a rodent. So I gave him my gaming mouse, which left me looking for a new one. I've found it, and it's from Logitech - it's called the G502 Proteus Core. I've long been a fan of Logitech's mice because their design fits my hand so well. I used a Logitech wireless mouse for almost a decade before it finally crossed the Rainbow Bridge. The right-handed G502 melds the ergonomic sense you'd expect from Logitech with the current aesthetic common to gaming mouse — angular, aggressive, weaponized. If the "Tumbler" Batmobile from Christopher Nolan's Batman movies had a mouse, this is what it would …

Showstoppers is a media event at CES 2015 where a concentration of vendors from the show get to show off the wares in what's hopefully a less crowded, congested setting. Sometimes it's jam-packed with the amazing. Other times it's a real snooze. This year fell decidedly in the middle, with some cool and interesting new things interspersed among the same-olds. So, Georgia, Anthony, Serenity and I tore through it and brought you back the very best. Continue reading...

HealthKit is the set of protocols developers and vendor can use to tie into Apple's Health app, which lets us get all of our health and fitness information all in one place. With HealthKit, we can also share information between apps — let one step tracker know what another step tracker has recorded — and also with our healthcare professionals, if we so choose. It's still early days and not every developer or vendor supports it yet, but everyone supports iOS in some way. At CES 2015, Georgia and Anthony took a look at some of the highlight from the health and fitness industry, and from HealthKit. Continue reading...

For years our customers have been in the trenches against cyberattacks in an increasingly complex digital landscape. We’ve been there with you, as have others. And we aren’t going anywhere. Forces often seek to undermine and disrupt technology and people, attempting to weaken the very devices and services people have come to depend on and trust.

The folks at WikiPad have been promising support for Apple products for a little while now, and now that we've spent a few minutes with one here at CES it looks like we were all better off waiting until they got it right. The Gamevice takes your iPad mini and straps two halves of a controller on either side of the screen, giving you an incredible controller experience that may or may not give you violent flashbacks to the days of playing with a Sega GameGear. Despite the added girth on either side of your iPad mini the controller is plenty comfortable to hold and doesn't take up nearly as much space when collapsed in your bag. If you're a fan of iPad gaming but dream o…

Apple is reportedly readying for the Canadian launch of Apple Pay in the early part of 2015. The launch could apparently happen as soon as March. This would potentially be the first international expansion of the service since it debut in the United States in October 2014. From 9to5Mac: Sources say partners are currently in negotiations with Apple regarding the launch scheduled to come sometime in the first half of this year. Apple and Canadian launch partners are in the process of planning advertising and other promotional material for March, which indicates that the launch could come as soon as then. Apple has also been rumored to be in talks with banks …

Apple has increased the price of apps in the App Stores of several markets, including countries in the European Union, Norway, Russia, and is set to include Canada as well. Apple emailed developers in these areas to let them know of the changes earlier this week. From 9to5Mac The cost of the cheapest apps in the UK have increased from £0.69 ($1.04) to £0.79 ($1.19), while Czech site Letemsvetem reports that the price there increased from €0.89 ($1.05) to €1.14 ($1.35) – crossing the psychological €1 barrier. The new pricing is still rolling out in some countries. Source: Letemsvetem, via 9to5Mac Continue reading...

The later you get into CES, the weirder it gets, and CES 2015 has been no exception to that rule. After the surprise revelation that Audi had an LG webOS smartwatch we had to wonder what else there could possibly be. Turns out there was still plenty of weird to be found at CES. Continue reading...

The folks at SwiftKey had an absolutely huge 2014, filled with users all around the world who have no idea how they managed to use a smartphone before this app existed. Not only is SwiftKey a big deal with Android users, but with iOS 8 opening the doors to third party keyboard the app quickly rose above the rest. When you add those users to the impressive accomplishment of working with Stephen Hawking to create a better language system for his chair, huge is the only way to describe the last year. It'll be hard to top those accomplishments in 2015, but according to SwiftKey VP Rhodri Thomas a big part of this coming year is going to be more third party themes for their ke…

Apple has scored another legal victory today, this time in a case concerning defective logic boards in MacBooks sold since May of 2010. The case was dismissed on grounds that plaintiffs weren't able to prove that the logic boards used were "unfit for their ordinary purpose." From Reuters: U.S. District Judge William Alsup in San Francisco said the plaintiffs, Uriel Marcus and Benedict Verceles, failed to show that Apple made "affirmative misrepresentations," despite citing online complaints and Apple marketing statements calling the laptops "state of the art" or the "most advanced" on the market. "Plaintiffs have failed to allege that Apple's logic boards we…

The promise of connected televisions and all of the streaming set top boxes in the world is more content with less effort, especially here at CES, but almost none of this new tech has done much of anything to get rid of the traditional remote control. Pronto is a connected box of a different kind, one that sits in front of your television instead of connecting directly to it. The combination of Pronto and the Peel smart remote app turns your phone into the remote control, and removes the need to use anything other than your phone to control just about everything that connects to your television. Peel can also act as a content suggestion system based on your input, making …

Apple has updated its French website today to show support for French satirical publication Charlie Hebdo, whose Paris offices were subjected to a terrorist attack yesterday. If you visit the site now, the words "Je Suis Charlie," French for "I Am Charlie," are displayed on a stark black banner across the bottom of the page. With the display of the banner, Apple joins a chorus of voices around the world in condemning the terrorist attack that saw 12 people shot dead, the BBC reports. Since yesterday, countless people have taken to Twitter to show their support with the "Je Suis Charlie" hashtag — a message that also appears on Charlie Hebdo's website. Sources: App…

Microsoft’s Surface tablet has inspired a few clones during its short history, but the latest rip off comes from three ex-Google engineers. Jeremy Zhou, David Ko, and Ben Luk used to work on products like Google Maps and search at the web giant, and formed Jide Technology in 2014 to create a combined tablet and laptop. The result is an "ultra tablet" with a magnetically attached keyboard and a kickstand that all looks identical to Microsoft’s Surface tablet. Jide Technology hasn’t just stopped at the hardware, though. Even the "Remix OS" rips off Microsoft’s work in various ways, including a mail client that’s a straight copy. So what’s the justification for such a …

The story behind Olloclip is downright inspirational, and their hardware just keeps getting better. Here at CES we're taking a look at all kinds of connected gadgetry, most of which either straps to your phone or connects to it wirelessly, and it's exciting to see how Olloclip is still very much one of the best out there. Taking photos with such a simple accessory is something anyone can do, and the perspective difference created by the multiple lenses that are available with Olloclip really enhance every part of the photography experience. We took a few minutes to sit down with Patrick O'Neill to learn a bit more about what Olloclip has been up to recently and learn a…

Late last year, Microsoft unveiled the newest addition to its Office family, a new presentation app simply called Sway. While it was only initially available as an iPhone app in New Zealand, Microsoft has announced today that the app is now rolling out to the App Store in more English speaking countries around the world, including the U.S., Canada, and India. Microsoft says: So, today we're excited to announce that we're ready for a much wider set of people to use Sway for iPhone, so we can learn from broader growth and usage. Customers in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, India and a number of other countries where English is an official language*…

Apple has hired John Solomon, a longtime HP executive, formerly a senior vice president with that company's printing a personal systems group. What his role at Apple will be is unclear, though it could involve boosting sales to governments and businesses. It is also possible, but apparently unlikely, that Solomon will help sell the Apple Watch internationally, according to Re/code: His precise role and title are unclear, though several sources describe it as being central to Apple's push to boost sales to big companies and government agencies with large technology budgets. Some sources say he may also be involved with international efforts to sell the forthcoming Ap…

Typo made a splash at CES 2014 with the BlackBerry-aping Typo keyboard for iPhone, and they were at CES 2015 to show off their new not-patent-infringing Typo 2 keyboard. But really, the more interesting news out of Typo was their new iPad keyboard, it doesn't try to copy Apple. If anything, it feels more like a copy of the Microsoft Surface Type Cover, but with some slick software. But first, let's look at the Typo 2 for iPhone. Leaving behind the BlackBerry-style design of version one was obviously the right legal call for Typo, but it's led to a keyboard that's not quite as functional as before, and certainly nowhere near as attractive (not that the original Typo w…
