Nothing's thoroughly changed about the Pandora service, but the app itself has had a thorough revamp. Now sporting a stark white/gray/blue color scheme that's much more in line with the new interface style introduced with iOS 7, Pandora Radio 5.7 also sports a few new features that make things a bit easier when it comes to building your own streaming radio station. Here's what's new: With the new Personalization Icon, the Thumb History for your favorite stations is at your fingertips. Accidentally thumbed a song up or down - now you can un-thumb simply by re-tapping the Thumb Icon. We've included a new Mini-Player so you can control your music while you browse …

The Photos section of the iCloud website has nabbed a couple of new features today. Users now enjoy new email sharing options, as well as a manual zoom slider. The new zoom slider appears in the top left corner of the Photos app, and enables you to do exactly what it implies: zoom in and out on the selected photo. Additionally, if signed into an iCloud email address, users will have a new email sharing option located in the upper right hand portion of the screen, represented by an envelope. Clicking the icon will bring up a familiar email interface where users can send the selected image to whomever they choose. Source: iCloud; Via: Apple Insider …

Once you've posted a photo using Instagram, the incredibly popular social photo network, it's locked into its tiny filtered form. Instagram doesn't even let you download it after the fact — you need to screenshot it or resort to a third-part ripper, even for your own photos. What Instagram does let you do, however, is set it to save a high resolution "2048x2048" version of your final, filtered photo to your camera roll as you post it. (I put the resolution in quotes because it really seems to vary, sometimes a bit lower, sometimes higher.) To save those original photos, all you have to do is enable the feature. How to turn on Instagram's save-to-Camera Roll setting …

With any new Windows operating system, there's always a bevy of features and customizations that aren't notably accessible. Windows 10 is no different, and probably even more so. In the latest Windows 10 release, Build 9926, a few hidden gems have been uncovered that can be accessed after making some registry modifications. If you're part of the Technical Preview program for Windows 10, you should already be familiar with the Windows registry. If you're not someone who has experience modifying registry values, take caution when applying the values presented here. Messing with the Windows registry can have extremely negative effects, sometimes trashing the entire op…

Following their Q4 2015 earning report last year, Apple gave guidance for the upcoming Q1 2015 quarter of between $63.5 and $66.5 billion. Given the success of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the continued growth of the Mac, and the flat but stable position of the iPad, however, it seems most analysts are eagerly predicting more. Philip Elmer-DeWitt, in his traditional roundup for Fortune The consensus among the analysts Fortune polled — 20 professionals and 15 amateurs — is that Apple's total sales for fiscal Q1 2015 will come in at about $68.3 billion, up 21% year over year. Apple will release their Q1 2015 earnings at around 1:30pm PT, 4:30pm ET on January 27, 2…

Motorola's Nexus 6 was originally scheduled to feature a fingerprint sensor where the dimple is located at the back, but the idea was ultimately foiled by Apple. Motorola was working on fingerprint recognition with a company called AuthenTec, with devices from as far back as 2011 featuring the technology. However, Apple acquired AuthenTec in 2012 for $356 million to use the technology in the Touch ID sensor, which meant that Motorola had to look elsewhere. According to former Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside, other options didn't quite cut it, meaning that the feature was left out from the Nexus 6: The secret behind that is that it was supposed to be fingerprint re…

AT&T plans to acquire Nextel Mexico for $1.875 billion in an effort to create a massive North American Mobile Service area that will be able to offer wireless access to 400 million people. The news comes a few months after AT&T announced plans to buy another Mexico-based wireless carrier, Iusacell, for $2.5 billion. Nextel Mexico has three million customers and its network covers 76 million people, according to AT&T. The company added: Combining Nextel Mexico with Iusacell will allow AT&T to more quickly improve and expand its mobile Internet service to the benefit of millions of Mexicans, particularly those who live outside major metropolitan a…

It has been reported that Samsung will be behind the next-generation iPhone. Samsung is said to provide up to 75 percent of processors used by Apple in the production of the company's next smartphone. According to the Korean Maeil Business Newspaper: "According to sources in the semiconductor industry on Sunday, Samsung Electronics will supply A9 for Apple's next handset model iPhone 7. The A8, IPhone 6 AP, has been solely supplied by Taiwan's TSMC, leaving no room for Samsung Electronics to be the AP supplier. However, this time, 75 percent of A9 will likely come from Samsung Electronics, market watchers expect." It has been previously covered that Samsung has…

There is absolutely no truth to the rumor that I'm linking to the Lucidream eXo-Skelton case for iPhone on Kickstarter because it looks like Krull's throwing blade. Nope. None. But it so totally does! There's a lot more to it than that, though... eXo is a strong eXo-Skeleton and an impact absorption system, providing luxurious security which protects the vulnerable areas of your iPhone 6, while leaving it virtually bare. eXo's arms provide biomimicking ergonomic textures that makes your iPhone much easier to grip and handle. A mechanical quick release system provides elegant utility by securely attaching your device onto virtually anything. The sheer moxi…

Some of them you've seen already and some more are coming in February and beyond. So what's here and what's near? The Pixel Project is the working name for a new weekly comic series by the ridiculously talented 8-bit pixel artist, Rich Stevens. It runs every Tuesday and pokes loving fun at Apple and those of us in the Apple community. It's all gorgeous stuff, so we really hope you're enjoying it — and sharing it! …

Last year Apple bought TestFlight, the popular beta distribution app, and relaunched it WWDC 2014 in a more focused, integrated form, but one that also required App Store approval for major feature changes. Since then developers and testers alike have been trying it out. The verdict so far? Supertop really likes it: None of these issues come close to negating the benefits of TestFlight for us as we work on updates Castro and Unread. We'll be excited to beta test Castro 2 this way as well. App developers should take the time to try it. The availability of a much larger test audience, far better install rates and simplified IAP testing should help you release higher q…

Siri launched in 2011 and can now be found on all modern iPhones and iPads. It's a virtual digital assistant that uses natural language voice control and sequential inference to listen to what you want and provide the best possible information or answer it can provide. It can help you stay connected, organize your life, and get thing done both professional and personal. It can also do a lot of cool tricks... all you have to do is know what to ask! 1. The name's Bond... No, not boned! Siri will default to using your name and the name of your contacts. If you want to change that, tell Siri: "Call me 'honey muffin' " or "Gwendolyn is my mom". If Siri has trou…

If you're a Windows 8.1 tablet user and have installed Windows 10 Build 9926, you may have noticed a somewhat frustrating turn of events. I admit, I'm a Windows 8.1 fan, and surprisingly, I'm not the only one. Over the last couple years I've gotten used to Windows 8.1. Don't hate me, but I enjoy how it works. That said, I've seen and heard from folks who are a bit dismayed over the missing Charms bar in Windows 10. It's a big change for sure, but I'm slowly getting accustomed to it. In fact, after using Windows 10 Build 9926 over the weekend, I'm starting to finally envision a final product that will actually be useful to me. Microsoft is doing good things here. Tod…

It is a well-known fact that Windows 8's biggest perceived/documented flaw was the Start Screen and how it was implemented. This fact was well documented by reviewers and many users. Even after the release of Windows 8.1, which allowed you to boot your system straight to the familiar Windows Desktop, I regularly heard from people that they hated Windows 8/8.1. Whenever I would ask why a majority of the time the response was simply I heard or read about it. Well we have seen over the last 3-4 months that Microsoft is making a significant effort to bring back familiarity to the more than 1.5 billion users of Windows around the world by building Windows 10 in a way th…

DIY, short for "do it yourself", is a weekly column where I roll up my sleeves and go over everything and anything from field-stripped and fixing your out-of-warranty iPhone or iPad to fun projects you can do with apps, family, and friends. Post lots of photos on Instagram? Ever think how cool it would be to turn all of your different photos into an awesome in-real-life collage to hang in your home? I recently decided I wanted to do just that with some of our vacation photos. After a quick web search, however, I realized the selection of free templates to choose from is rather dismal. That's when I decided to make my own customizable template. Follow along for cool, fr…

For decades, the video game cartridge was the staple of home video game play, and even a vital component of many early home computer systems. Interestingly, the companies that developed the first videogame cartridge and brought it to market are largely a forgotten footnote in the annals of early game development. Writing for Fast Company, Benj Edwards has documented the early days of cartridge development at Alpex and Fairchild: If you've ever used one, you have two men to thank: Wallace Kirschner and Lawrence Haskel, who invented the game cartridge 40 years ago while working at an obscure company and rebounding from a business failure. Once the pair's programmable …

If you're be looking for information about Windows Update processing in Windows 10, you should know about a change that is introduced with Build 9926. In the past, the WindowsUpdate.log file (location: %windir%\Windowsupdate.log) provided information about updates downloaded and installed, and whether update installations were successful or not, among other things. If you open the WindowsUpdate.log file in Windows 10 Build 9926, you'll be met with a placeholder message: The "go" link (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=518345) in the WindowsUpdate.log file message points to a non-existent KB Article (though it currently lands on the Windows Insider front pag…

If you've installed Windows 10 Build 9926 and find that some apps work and some apps don't, the fix could be as easy as registering the apps. In particular, some early testers have found that apps like Cortana, the beta Store, and others either won't launch at all, or start to launch but hang on the app's splash screen. The potential fix goes back to similar issues experienced during earlier Builds, which includes executing a PowerShell command at an elevated command prompt. The PowerShell command: http://winsupersite.com/windows-10/fixing-windows-10-apps-wont-launch-or-hang-apps-splash-screen

"Thunderstrike" is the name for an attack that can target Mac hardware via the Thunderbolt port. Apple had previously updated the Retina 5K iMac and 2014 Mac mini to partially secure them against Thunderstrike. Now, the upcoming OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 will fix the problem for all recent Macs running Yosemite. Rick Mogull previously explained how Thunderstrike works on TidBITS: Macs, like all computers, have firmware that swings into action when you push the power button, booting up the computer, loading the operating system, initializing hardware, and performing other functions. Some technologies, such as FireWire and Thunderbolt, interact with this firmware at an…
