by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies
Apple's iCloud Photo Library service is currently in beta, and for good reason—it currently only allows you to sync images you've taken on your iOS devices, with a Mac app promised in early 2015. If you still want to get some of your Mac's iPhoto images into iCloud Photo Library before the Mac client's official release, however, there's a pretty easy new way: Last week, Apple started offering an Upload button on the beta version of iCloud.com. To access it, you'll first have to visit beta.icloud.com. General reminder: Because this is beta software, there might be glitches or data disappearance; as such, we recommend keeping a backup of your photos offline just in …

Sprint could be in talks to buy FreedomPop
by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies
A new report claims that Sprint is among the many companies that might be thinking about acquiring FreedomPop, the wireless carrier that offers a number of voice minutes and data for free each month to US customers. USA Today, citing unnamed sources, also claims that some of the other companies that might be in the running to purchase FreedomPop include an unnamed but "large U.S. technology company" as well as another wireless carrier that's smaller than Sprint. Both Sprint and FreedomPop's official spokespersons would not comment on the rumors. Sprint ended its acquisition talks with rival T-Mobile in August, and fired its old CEO Dan Heese around the same time. …

With the iPad Air 2, Apple starts customizing the GPU as well
by Guest Harish Jonnalagadda- 0 replies
The 64-bit SoC powering the iPad Air 2, the A8X, was found to be using a custom GPU that is designed to offer better performance per Watt. Being an ARM IP licensee, Apple uses a custom design for its CPUs, while offering a standard Imagination Technologies GPU. With the A8X, however, it looks like Apple is undertaking GPU customization as well. AnandTech initially discovered that the GPU in the iPad Air 2 features an eight-cluster design, which does not match any of Imagination Technologies' current offerings in the Series6 family: With 8 clearly visible GPU clusters, there is no question at this point that A8X is not using a GX6650, but rather something more. And t…

UK mobile operator GiffGaff is now offering 4G LTE on monthly plans starting from £12
by Guest Rich Edmonds- 0 replies

UK mobile operator GiffGaff has unveiled new plans to take advantage of faster 4G LTE speeds. Utilizing the O2 network, the virtual mobile operator is offering 4G on plans that start from £12 a month (for 1GB of data). There's no option for unlimited use, however, limiting power users to 5GB of 4G data for £18 a month. Since GiffGaff works on the O2 network (800MHz), you'll need to have a 4G compatible mobile device (phones aren't included with the affordable plan pricing), but it's positive to see the network to offer LTE and provide more choice for consumers in the UK. Will you be looking into GiffGaff's 4G LTE offering? Let us know your thoughts on the network'…

Apple rumored to be looking into new downtown Los Angeles flagship store
by Guest Rich Edmonds- 0 replies

Apple is rumored to be moving to the Broadway Trade Center in downtown Los Angeles. According to the report over on Downtown Examiner, the company will utilize the 1.1 million square feet for residential, offices (for both Apple and Beats) and a new flagship store. The new offices alongside the flagship store would fit in well with the city's "Bring Back Broadway" initiative to revive dormant locations in the area and instil a new lease of life into the section of Los Angeles. Apple is also expanding elsewhere with new offices opening up in Cambridge, UK. Do note the move has not been officially confirmed, nor do we know when Apple expects to move in and open up s…

The third release of the Windows Technical Preview—the pre-release version of Windows 10—is now available. And it adds a ton of nice new features, including some that have been requested by testers. If you're using the Windows Technical Preview, you can upgrade to the new build immediately. Note: Actually, you need to be in the "Fast ring" to get the build immediately. If you're in the "Slow ring," you will see the new build sometime in the days ahead. Here's what Microsoft reports is new in this build: Hide the Search or Task View buttons on the taskbar. In the previous WTP build, Microsoft added these new buttons to the taskbar, but there was no interface for m…

How to turn on Yosemite's Mail Drop feature for non-iCloud email accounts
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
One of the many new features introduced in OS X Yosemite is Mail Drop, which enables you to attach files up to 5 GB regardless of your email service provider's limitations. Did you know it works with non-iCloud email, too? Here's what you need to do to get it working. Mail Drop cleverly uses iCloud as a temporary storage location for the file you're sending. It's seamless for Mac and iOS users — the file appears like a normal enclosure. But it works just as well for people who aren't part of the Apple ecosystem — rather than seeing a traditional file attachment, they see a download link instead. The bottom line? You're welcome to send video files, folders of image…

Microsoft has patched a critical flaw in Windows that has existed in every version since the introduction of Windows 95 more than 19 years ago. IBM security researchers discovered the flaw earlier this year and notified the software giant privately in May. The rare bug allows attackers to remotely execute code on an affected system just by convincing Windows users to visit a URL in Internet Explorer. IBM says the exploit can be triggered on Internet Explorer 3.0 onwards, and every currently supported version of Windows is affected. "This vulnerability has been sitting in plain sight for a long time despite many other bugs being discovered and patched in the same Wi…

Wireless network company Belkin has teamed up with Mr. Coffee to produce the Mr. Coffee Smart Coffeemaker. As its name implies, this product can be programmed and controlled remotely by a smartphone app, which in this case is Belkin's own WeMo app for the iPhone and iPad. The Mr. Coffee Smart Coffeemaker contains a 10-cup, stainless steel thermal carafe but its main feature is how it can be controlled by the WeMo app from anywhere. Belkin says: Through the app, users can also schedule a week's worth of brew times, check to make sure the coffeemaker has a full tank of water or the carafe is in place, setup reminders, and receive alerts when the water filter need…

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Alibaba Executive Vice Chairman Joseph Tsai revealed that the Chinese e-commerce giant was currently in discussion with Apple over a payment processing solution tailored for China. According to Tsai: Right now, I think what we can say is that this is focused on the China market for Apple. We are positive about the potential cooperation, but it depends on the details being worked out. At the WSLD Live conference last month, Tim Cook mentioned that he was interested in working with Alibaba, a sentiment shared by the retailer's founder Jack Ma. The partnership between the two companies would likely result in the int…

iPhone 6 launch was 'three years too late', according to Steve Wozniak
by Guest Harish Jonnalagadda- 0 replies

In an interview with CNNMoney at Capital One's new Innovation Center in Plano, Texas, Steve Wozniak stated that Apple should have launched a larger iPhone three years ago. Wozniak also shared his views on the upcoming Apple Watch. According to the Apple co-founder: Apple could have had a much bigger share of the smartphone market if it had a larger-screen iPhone for the past three years. It could have competed better with Samsung. Samsung is the number one handset manufacturer in the world, with a global market share of 24 percent in Q3 2014. Apple came in second with a 12 percent share. Despite being the co-founder of Apple, Wozniak said that he likes to try o…

Former Army medic Rachel Woolley now works for Microsoft. (Photo credit: Scott Eklund, Red Box Pictures) In her former life, Rachel Woolley was an Army medic for convoy platoons in Iraq. She completed her service at Madigan Army Medical Center on Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, Washington. While there, she qualified for a program that launched last year – the Microsoft Software & Systems Academy, a program that taps active-duty service members for long-term careers in technology. In Woolley’s case, it turns out that the same analytical thinking and problem-solving skills she developed as an Army medic also are serving her well as a software developer. Sh…
