Apple's Jony Ive rails against today's design education landscape
by Guest Dan Thorp-Lancaster- 0 replies
Speaking at London's Design Museum last night, Apple's Jony Ive called the current design education landscape "tragic." The talk came about as Ive spoke about how Apple's efforts to hire young designers often fail because schools aren't teaching them how to make products — instead preferring to spend instructional time on studying the design of three-dimensional objects, rather than creating them. Speaking on their hiring process, Ive had this to say: So many of the designers that we interview don't know how to make stuff, because workshops in design schools are expensive and computers are cheaper. That's just tragic, that you can spend four years of your life …

Microsoft’s changes to Windows 10 have been largely well received, but one particular modification to OneDrive has angered Windows users. The latest Windows 10 Technical Preview build, released earlier this week, changes OneDrive sync functionality significantly. Microsoft has decided to ditch its use of placeholder files in Windows 10 in favor of selective file and folder syncing that’s identical to Dropbox. In Windows 8.1 folders and files aren’t automatically synced down to a machine, saving disk space. Instead, small placeholder files are used to show that files and folders are available, and any data and documents that are opened will automatically sync. The cu…

by Guest Chuong H Nguyen- 0 replies

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has reportedly asked Apple to protect sensitive health data collected in the company's Health app on iPhones. According to reports, the FTC wants assurances that Apple won't share health data without the consent of owners. News agency Reuters is reporting that both Apple and the FTC have met in the past few months to discuss health, with Apple emphasizing that it will not sell any collected health data: The two people, both familiar with the FTC's thinking, said Apple representatives have met on multiple occasions with agency officials in recent months, to stress that it will not sell its users' health data to third-party…

Eric Eide, University of Utah research assistant professor of computer science, stands in the computer science department's "Machine Room" where racks of web servers sit. It is on these computers that Eide, U computer science associate professor John Regehr, and their research team created and tested A3, a suite of computer applications that defeat malware and automatically repair the damage it causes. University of Utah computer scientists have developed software that not only detects and eradicates never-before-seen viruses and other malware, but also automatically repairs damage caused by them. As I've advocated for years, the Recent places feature in Windows/File Explorer is one of the greatest file management features to ever be invented. Ok, well, maybe that was a little dramatic, but the fact still remains that this feature alone can make it extremely easy to keep track of the files and folders that you work with on a regular basis. In the Windows 10 Technical Preview, and presumably the final version, File Explorer sports an enhanced version of the Recent places feature called Home. In previous versions of Windows, the Recent places feature only contained folders, but the new incarnation contains two sections titled Frequent folders and Recent files, whi…

by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies

iPhone and iPad owners have an amazing problem — iOS is the only platform with all major office suites. The good news is: we get to choose between Apple iWork (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and Google Docs (Docs, Sheets, and Slides). The bad news is: we have to choose between Apple iWork, Microsoft Office, and Google Docs. And it can be a tough choice! iWork is great for consumers. Microsoft Office is the enterprise standard. Google Docs is increasingly everywhere. So, which one is best? We put them to the test so you can find out! Word processing: Pages vs Word vs Docs One of the most common things we do with an Off…

If you're experiencing problems with OneDrive syncing after updating to the latest Windows Technical Preview build, I might have received a fix for you. Microsoft contacted me after I started complaining at this problem on Twitter, and it seems like the fix they provided will work. To recap what's happening here, Microsoft issued a new build to Windows Technical Preview users yesterday afternoon. While most of the changes in this build are fairly innocuous, there's one biggie: OneDrive no longer uses the smart files system from Windows 8.x—which was wonderful—apparently because it confused too many people. (And they would go offline and not have access to files they…

Microsoft yesterday rolled out the next update to its Windows 10 Technical Preview, just three weeks after the previous version arrived. But one change that Microsoft trumpeted -- an alteration to how OneDrive, the company's cloud-based storage service, synchronizes files -- got a big thumbs down from users. The update, tagged "Build 9879," followed the Oct. 21 release of Build 9860, which came 20 days after the initial Technical Preview. So far, Microsoft's cadence for Windows 10 has been faster than what analysts anticipate will be the practice when the new operating system publicly launches in mid-2015. Then, updates will ship as often as monthly for consumers…

Microsoft acquires Aorato to give enterprise customers better defense against digital...

I’m pleased to announce today that Microsoft has acquired Aorato, an innovator in enterprise security. We are making this acquisition to give customers a new level of protection against threats through better visibility into their identity infrastructure. With Aorato we will accelerate our ability to give customers powerful identity and access solutions that span on-premises and the cloud, which is central to our overall hybrid cloud strategy. We all know corporate security is more important than ever. Nearly every day there are more headlines about breaches, fraud and data loss. Unfortunately, compromised passwords, stolen identities and network intrusion are a fact o…

Having Wi-Fi problems on OS X Yosemite? Here's a possible fix!
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
No sooner was OS X Yosemite released in October before Mac users started to complain of Wi-Fi problems with the new release. OS X 10.10.1 is currently in development and testing, but until then, what are you to do with Wi-Fi that isn't working right? Here's one possible fix until Apple works out the problems. Many users aren't having any Wi-Fi problems with Yosemite, but some are. And the problems are maddening. Wi-Fi connections drop, or spontaneously stop working. Word of one interim fix comes from reader Evan H. Katz, who recently talked with Apple's own tech support about the problems he's been having with Wi-Fi. The solution comes from modifying the Network syst…
