There's now a Facebook Groups app, because Facebook
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies

First there was just Facebook, and then there was Messenger, and now there is Groups. Yep, Facebook has launched a dedicated app purely for their Groups feature, and, well, it's pretty much a different user interface for the current groups that already exist in the primary Facebook app. Unlike with Messenger, which was forcibly extracted from the primary Facebook app, Facebook sees Groups as a compliment to the primary Facebook app. "Follow your groups here or on Facebook, whichever is easier for you," they say. There's not much more to say about Facebook Groups. It's Facebook's Groups feature, in an app. If Facebook Groups are important to you, you can download i…

Review: Vellum 1.2 brings ebook creation into the 21st century
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies

I've been building and editing ebooks for just over four years now. I started back in 2010 with Macworld when we were still hand-compiling HTML files; and though our process changed and simplified greatly over the years, we still needed multiple programs and long working hours to put everything together for multi-platform ebook releases. Enter Vellum. I got my first glimpse of the Mac app two years ago back in its early beta stages: At the time, the WYSIWYG ebook-builder only supported text and limited styling, but its live-preview engine and instant-compile for iBooks, Kindle, and Nook gave me true hope for a great cross-platform ebook tool. Vellum 1.0 launched this J…

WhatsApp messages may soon get even more secure on iOS
by Guest Adam Zeis- 0 replies
WhatsApp is now one of the strongest messaging apps you can find on Android — thanks to new end-to-end encryption for messages — and the features may soon come to the iOS version as well. That means messages send from your iOS device would be totally secure and not have the ability to be decrypted by WhatsApp at all — no matter what. Other apps offer similar end-to-end security, but WhatsApp is by far the largest of the bunch. The new feature comes from a partnership with Open Whisper Systems, best known for their TextSecure apps. Open Whisper CTO Moxie Marlinspike says it took six months to nail down the code for such a large deployment. Only the two parties invo…

Changing the game: The digital transformation of Real Madrid futbol club
by Guest Orlando Ayala- 0 replies

We all develop passions early in life that shape who we are. My love for soccer, or as we call it in my native Colombia, futbol, was a powerful force in my youth. For me, futbol was not just about kicking a ball into a goal, but about the power of community. In futbol, I was a member of a community that shared the same passions: an obsessive discipline to become more skilled with the ball and a fierce determination to excel in the sport. These passions, which on the surface seem very individual, actually required a strong community, one that worked tirelessly to grow together as a team, even when personalities clashed, and one that strived to ensure that each and every pl…

Super! is a new quasi-social network built around caption-prompted photos
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies
In case you didn't think you had a reason for another photo-oriented social network on your iPhone (hello, Instagram, Imugr, 500px, et al), there's a new one from serial entrepreneur and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone: Super! The app (which we're just going to call "Super", no exclamation, for the sake of our own sanity) focuses on imagery, but unlike those networks listed above it also focuses on bold captions overlaid on top of those photos with prompts like "The Best" and "My Favorite" and "The Sexiest" and "Definitely Don't". You then complete the sentence and "sign it" with, well, whatever tag you with to sign, and publish. Super is built around simplicity, wit…

by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies

Target is getting ready for Black Friday 2014 with an upcoming iPhone app update that will enable customers to view in-store maps with the locations of all of their major sales items during that massive holiday purchasing event. While in-store maps have been available as part of the Target app, adding a way to find where all the best deals are located in the store aisles is new. A company called Point Inside is helping Target with these updates, which include adding shopping lists that "provide a product's aisle location when a guest is in store and link directly to the new, interactive maps." As far as their Black Friday updates, Target says, "Open the app between 6…

Uber teams with Spotify to let you ride with your music
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

Spotify has teamed up with Uber to let you ride with your music. Now rolling out in beta, Uber will let you choose what music you listen to during your ride when you connect your Spotify account. Because it's in beta, the service will only work in certain cities with select drivers. To use Spotify with Uber, you will first need a Spotify Premium account. Then request a ride from Uber as you normally would. If you get matched with a music-enabled car, a small bar will appear at the bottom that will take you to a music customization screen. You can then designate any of your Spotify playlists, one of Uber's pre-made lists, or search for new music. You can control your …

Apple reportedly strikes new processor supply deal with Samsung
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

Apple has reportedly cut a deal for Samsung to provide the vast majority of its A-series chips, like the A8 found in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the future. Samsung is said to have a contract for 80 percent of Apple's supply, but delivery is not supposed to being until 2016. A major factor in this supposed deal is the Samsung's ability to mitigate capacity risk, according to The Korea Times: "Apple has designated Samsung as the primary supplier of its next A-series chips powering iOS devices from 2016 as the alliance with GlobalFoundries (GF) enabled Samsung to cut off capacity risk," a source familiar with the deal said. Taiwanese chip maker TSMC will al…

iOS 9 wish-list: 'Hey Siri!' activation alternatives
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Too early to start thinking about iOS 9? Not at all. Features are already getting pushed, pitched and locked down for next year, so what better time to bring some attention to things that... well... need some attention. "Hey Siri!" is a good one to start with. When your iPhone or iPad is plugged in, and "Hey Siri" is enabled in Settings, you can activate voice control simply by saying those magic words. The problem is, everyone knows those words and every plugged-in iOS 8 device recognizes them. That leads to inopportune activations — mischievous and accidental alike. How could "Hey Siri" be improved? Google's "Okay Google Now" tries to learn your voice; if it hears…
