Microsoft has today announced the acquisition of Stuttgart, Germany-based company HockeyApp, which provides iOS developers with detailed app crash reports, along with a way to distribute beta versions of those apps. The specific financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed in the announcement. This latest move is yet another example of Microsoft servicing app developers working on platforms other than the company's own Windows OS. Microsoft stated: In the coming months, we will introduce new iOS and Android SDKs for Application Insights based on the features of HockeyApp. Application Insights offers a 360-degree view of application usage, availability,…

Review: I should hate Crossy Road, but I love it
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies

Of all the silly little games I've played in the last month, I keep coming back to Crossy Road. It's not the mechanics: The app plays fast and loose with the Frogger look, but it's essentially the same movement you've played in side-scrollers for years. Step forward. Jump on a moving target. Jump to another moving target. Avoid the giant train. It's not the in-app purchase pleas, which are about on par in their annoyance with every other free-to-play game. No, Crossy Road is charming. Which is odd, for a game that regularly cries out for ratings and in-app purchases. I usually detest games like this. They annoy me and then I delete them. But this game doesn't beg yo…

Microsoft’s Music Deals app launched in October and it has been a rather impressive way of obtaining music ever since. 101 albums were priced at $1.99 or less initially, and Taylor Swift’s new 1989 release debuted for just $0.99 in a brief promotional period. Now Microsoft is literally giving music away. 100 albums are now free, including hits like Dr. Dre’s 2001, Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP2, Rihanna’s Unapologetic, Kanye West’s Graduation, and Lady Gaga’s The Fame. All of the free albums are available as MP3s so you’re free to use them on any device you want, and all 100 are available until December 15th through the Music Deals app and Xbox Music in the US o…

Media picks of the week: Smashing Pumpkins, The Babadook, AC/DC and more!
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies

Every week Apple adds tons of new media content on iTunes — music, books, movies and more. It's impossible to keep up with all of it, but it's not impossible to pick out the very best. Here they are! This week we've got the latest from Smashing Pumpkins, AC/DC's 17th album, a creepy new horror movie from Australia and much more. Monuments to an Elegy - Smashing Pumpkins Billy Corgan is back with Smashing Pumpkins' ninth studio album. This is a short album, especially by Pumpkins standards: nine tracks, with only one (barely) exceeding four minutes. It opens with Tiberius, filled with power chords and quick transitions to tinkling piano, leading into Being Beige, w…

iCloud Photo Sharing lets you share photos with other people and also lets them share photos with you. So, you can share experiences from an event, collaborate on a project, and all without having to individually message photos back and forth. The downside is, of course, you might discover you're not really interested in that many photos from that many people, and the notifications that go with them. In that case, you can easily remove yourself from any shared Photo Stream in just a few taps. How to remove yourself from a shared Photo Stream on iPhone and iPad Launch the Photos app on your iPhone or iPad. Tap on the Shared tab in the bottom navigation. Tap on the…

How to get Voice Memos off your iPhone
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies
I use Apple's Voice Memos app for a variety of tasks — recording notes for work; strange foley sounds that might work well for The Incomparable's radio show; or, more recently, short song sketches or covers. When I want to get those off my iPhone, I've got a few different options: It all depends on what computer I'm using. On your primary computer: Use iTunes If you want to send voice memos to the computer you also happen to use to sync your iPhone, it's easy enough. Connect your iPhone to your computer via USB or Wi-Fi sync. Open iTunes. Click the icon that represents your iPhone along the top menu bar. Select the Music option from the sidebar. Che…

If you've ever found yourself longing for a dissertation on the relative merits of Twitter for iPhone and iPad, Twitterrific for iPhone and iPad, and Tweetbot for iPhone — including loading timeline gaps and tweet marker sync, web views, cards and previewing tweets, extensions, gestures, profiles, lists, tweetstorms, direct messages, uploading photos, discover, muting, fave and retweet counts, search, timeline, and new twitter — then you're in for a real treat. You're in for over 20K words of treat! Because that's just exactly what's been done by Federico Viticci of MacStories. The results? by Guest Richard Devine- 0 replies

Alongside the launch of its app in Google Play today for Android, HERE has confirmed its Maps app will be coming back to the iPhone in 2015. The previous effort was around for a little while and pulled when "iOS 7 ruined the experience" somehow, but thanks to positive feedback from Android users, iOS will benefit next. Following the positive reviews of HERE for Android, a lot of people have expressed their interest in an iOS version of our app. We really appreciate this interest and demand. Our iOS app development team is working hard on this and we plan to officially launch HERE for iOS in early 2015. So there we have it. HERE Maps has gotten a lot better sinc…

Disk Alarm for Mac review
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
"Your startup disk is full." If you've ever gotten that error message on your Mac, you know what a headache it can be. It can keep your Mac from running, at least until you've moved or deleted enough files for it to work again. A utility called Disk Alarm can help you head off disk space problems before you're in a crisis. Running out of disk space can be a real drag. At worst it'll keep your Mac from working at all; it can also cause the Mac to slow way down. Generally speaking, it's always a wise idea to keep at least 10 percent of your boot volume free at any given time, since OS X sometimes needs scratch space on the disk for swap files and other content; more…

How to delete photos from Photo Stream on iPhone and iPad
by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies
The original Photo Stream service automatically saves your last 1,000 photos or 30 days of photos and syncs them across all your Apple devices. Since Photo Stream doesn't count against your iCloud storage, you might think you don't have to worry about deleting them. However, every once and a while a photo might slip in that your definitely don't want syncing between your devices. If and when that happens, you can easily delete the photo from Photo Stream, and that will not only remove it from all devices, but in the case of the new iCloud Photo Library service, delete it permanently as well. How to delete photos from Photo Stream (iCloud Photo Library disabled) If…

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions for Mac review
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
It's rare that the Mac gets a new game release the same time as everyone else, which makes Aspyr's recent Mac release of Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions noteworthy. It's also noteworthy for being a purely-distilled arcade game experience that sports a retro design paired with thoroughly modern play sensibilities. If you've never played Geometry Wars, the concept is simple: You pilot a claw-shaped ship at the center of the screen, and your goal is to survive as long as possible, racking up as many points as you can. You do that by shooting other ships that appear on the playfield. Their destruction leaves behind objects called geoms; collecting them increases the value of a…

Even though Microsoft doesn’t really take action against all the pirated Windows and Office versions in use out there, the company is ready to go to court when it detects certain usage patterns related to illegal Windows and Office activations. Torrent Freak reports that Microsoft has already filed a complaint against persons behind an AT&T subscription who have activated multiple pirated copies of Windows 7 and Office 10. Microsoft has a cyberforensics team in place that’s tracking such suspicious activities. In this case the team has identified “a number of product key activations from IP address 76.245.7.147, which is presently assigned to ISP AT&T Int…

Microsoft’s Gabriel Aul, one of the most prominent members of the Windows 10 team, announced today that a security update to the current build of the operating system will not install if a user has Office already installed. Instead, users of build 9879 of Windows 10, if they want to install the security fix, may have to uninstall Office, and later reinstall it. Here’s the mini-tweetstorm from Gabe: The company also released a more technical explanation here. Note that you might not have to do the Office dance to get the new code, so try to update without doing so. But if it doesn’t work, this is what to do. Windows 10 is a different sort of project for Micros…
