by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies

Lucas Pope, the creator of the just launched iPad version of the acclaimed indie game Papers, Please has now stated that it will be updated next week to restore content that was in the original PC version that included nudity. The PC version of the game, which has the player monitoring who comes into a fictional totalitarian country, included nude images of characters as they are put through a full body scanner. Earlier this week, Pope said he removed that nude content from the iPad port so it could be published, stating: Apple rejected that build for containing "pornographic content." Now Pope has posted on Twitter that Apple has contacted him once again …

Google Maps adds highway lane guidance for several European countries
by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies
European users of Google Maps now have a new update that offers voice-guided lane navigation for highways located in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the UK and Ireland. Google states: When you're in the turn-by-turn navigation mode, we can now make sure you don't miss your next turn or exit by showing you which lane to stay in or move to so you'll never find yourself darting across traffic at the last minute -- or worse, driving for miles down the wrong road. When you approach a junction or exit with multiple lanes, voice guidance will suggest which lanes are best for your route. You'll also have easy access to alternate routes while you're navigating, so you ca…

We all know that it's against the law to sell copyrighted material, but is it also illegal to tell people about software that can strip DRM off e-books without the intention to distribute? New York Judge Denise Cote has recently ruled that it's not. The lawsuit in question, which was never cut and dry to begin with, was filed by Penguin and Simon & Schuster against Abbey House Media, a company that used to sell e-books for them. Abbey House was bound by law to protect those files with DRM, but when it was a month away from shutting down its digital bookstore in 2013, someone in the company felt compelled to help customers gain control of the e-books they already b…

One of this week's Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 7 has been withdrawn after some users discovered that it blocked installation of software containing digital signatures, including first- and third-party software, and even other Windows updates. The problem update is called KB3004394. The purpose of this update was to change how Windows updates its collection of root certificates used to authenticate SSL and TLS connections. Without the update, Windows is meant to poll for certificate updates once a week. With the update, this frequency is increased to once a day. Unfortunately, this apparently simple change has had severe consequences for some users of Windows 7…

NSFW: Merry Godzillamas, Godzilla phones, and Apple getting the fundamentals right
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
NSFW is a weekly op-ed column in which I talk about whatever's on my mind. Sometimes it'll have something to do with the technology we cover here on iMore; sometimes it'll be whatever pops into my head. Your questions, comments and observations are welcome. I'm sort of all over the place this week, so bear with me: I've got some exciting Godzilla news, I'm defending my criticism of the iPhone 6 Plus and I'm ranting a bit about Apple. So stick around. My big excitement for the week was to learn that Toho, the Japanese movie studio behind the original Godzilla films, is planning a new Godzilla movie to be released in 2016. That's two years before the next installmen…

Continuity: Where it is now, and our hopes and dreams for the future
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Continuity is one of the major new features across Apple's new operating systems, iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, and the one that's best embodied Apple's "integration" theme. It lets you AirDrop just about anything between your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It makes hotspots instantly available. It relays your phone calls and SMS/MMS between your iPhone and your iPad or Mac, and back again. And it lets you handoff activity between all of your devices. Yet, for all Continuity does, it's still a version 1.0. That means there are some frustrations, but also a lot of hopes, dreams and wants for the future. Here they are! Are you using Continuity? Peter: I do, but I don't use it …

by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies

Samsung has started manufacturing the Apple A9 system-on-a-chip, which is widely expected to power everything from the next generation iPhone 6s (or iPhone 7) to the hotly rumored iPad Pro. What's more, it's expected to run on the new 14 nanometer process, making it even more power-efficient. This according to Korea's Electronic Times: According to industry insiders on December 11, SEC began production of Apple's A9 in the Austin plant in the US using the 14nm FinFET technology. Samsung has production lines capable of FinFET process production in Austin, US and Giheung, Korea, but began to produce A9 only in Austin as it is in the initial stage. The same report…

by Guest Rich Edmonds- 0 replies

EE will be scrapping the Orange Wednesday 2-for-1 cinema ticket deal after being available for a decade. Customers of Orange (and subsequently EE) have enjoyed a weekly deal that allowed them to head down to their local cinema to check out the latest blockbusters at a reduced price. This offer will no longer be available after February 2015, but the carrier stresses they are working on a worthy successor. According to Marketing Magazine: Despite the longevity of Orange Wednesday, Marketing understands take-up is declining as customers can increasingly watch films cheaply on their mobile devices. The analogue offering is also at odds with EE's own brand proposition, …

Apple's Hour of Code workshops delight kids... of all ages!
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

Press the button. Slide to unlock. Tap the icon. The app or game fills your screen — and your senses. But how does that happen? How does that icon get on the screen? How does that bird fly across it? How does that plant obliterate that zombie? How do all these apps and games work? The answer is "code". And Apple's free Hour of Code workshops were designed to introduce kids to just that. To get a feeling for the event, Serenity Caldwell went to the Hour of Code at the SoHo Apple Store in New York City. I took my god children, ages 6 and 9, to the Apple Store in Montreal. At both locations, and at Apple Stores around the world, kids and adults alike began filing in a …

Facebook is no longer showing search results from Microsoft's Bing search engine on its on-site Graph Search product, as Reuters reports. The move apparently happened four days ago, alongside an update that improved Graph Search so that it could return specific posts when you search instead of just people. In a statement to Venture Beat, a spokesperson said “We’re not currently showing web search results in Facebook Search because we’re focused on helping people find what’s been shared with them on Facebook.” Microsoft also chimed in, saying "we continue to partner with Facebook in many different areas.” Search is far from a "pillar" for Facebook When it was firs…

For his efforts in diversity, sustainability, and forging strong partnerships to propel Apple's performance, CEO Tim Cook is the Person of the Year pick for the Financial Times in 2014. The publication highlights Cook's efforts to do the right thing when it comes to Apple's commitment to social and environmental responsibility while at the same time increasing Apple's stock prices by 50 percent this year compared to a tumultuous 2013. The Financial Times wrote of Mr. Cook: Financial success and dazzling new technology alone might have been enough to earn Apple's steely chief executive the FT's vote as the 2014 Person of the Year, but Mr Cook's brave exposition …

Apple un-rejects Transmit's iCloud Drive upload feature
by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies

Apple's App Store review team has changed their minds and decided to allow Transmit, the popular file transfer and management app for iPhone and iPad, to restore their iCloud Drive and storage provider upload feature. Update: late Wednesday we got a nice call from Apple. We have resubmitted Transmit iOS with "Send To" (iCloud Drive et al.) restored. — Panic Inc (@panic) December 11, 2014 This comes less that a week after Apple's review team informed Panic that they'd need to remove file upload, presumably because iOS apps were only supposed to store or update files they themselves created or edited. The feature should return as soon as the Transmit update h…

DeskConnect's Workflow is incredible. It brings a variant of OS X's Automator to the iPhone and iPad, giving mobile users detailed automation workflows for the first time. And it does so in an uncomplicated, easy-to-learn style, with a clean, smart interface. Once you've built a workflow, you can use extensions and Web Clips on your home screen to launch them, no interaction with the main app needed. I've only had the chance to play around with Workflow for a short time, but Federico Viticci over at MacStories has been interacting with the beta for a while and has some great observations and suggestions for people interested in learning more about Workflow.
