Whatsapp for the web reportedly in the works
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

Facebook-owned Whatsapp appears to be working on a web-based version. A number of strings were found in the Android version of the app that point to a web-based Whatsapp. However, since Whatsapp doesn't use accounts, and is instead tied to a phone number, there is the issue of authentication. It appears that Whatsapp on the web may solve this with QR codes. From Android World: However, we found evidence that WhatsApp a QR code is used for the link. On the screen of the computer, in the browser, then a 2D barcode as below, can be seen. This QR code scanner was a long time present in the WhatsApp application but has recently expanded considerably. Whatsapp t…

With the return of the Start menu in Windows 10, we sudden have a wide range of places in the UI where we can pin frequently-used items for easy access. Which of these you use will depend on how you work, of course, and some options may be superfluous to one user but be indispensable to the next. The Start list in the new Start menu is one such example. There are others. You can pin Modern apps and desktop applications to the Start menu (or Start screen), of course, and to the taskbar. You can also pin items to the Favorites or Home views in File Explorer. But if you're coming from Windows 7 or an older Windows version, you may be more comfortable pinning items to what…

Microsoft told us a little bit about its next version of Windows back in September, but a new leak seems to give us a closer look at a few features that haven't been officially revealed just yet. Screenshots published by the blog WinBeta and The Verge's Tom Warren, who has a solid track record when it comes to Windows news, reportedly show an early build of Windows 10 called "9901." Microsoft is calling its next big software update Windows 10 because it supposedly represents such a major overhaul that it made sense to skip "Windows 9" entirely in the Windows naming convention. Based on what we've seen regarding Windows 10, Microsoft seems to be making a big effort…

You can now get an iPhone 6 for as low as $129 at Walmart; iPhone 6 Plus also discounted
by Guest Harish Jonnalagadda- 0 replies
Walmart is offering a $50 discount on the latest iPhones, which means that you can get the 16GB iPhone 6 for as low as $129 on a two-year contract with AT&T, Sprint or Verizon. The 16GB iPhone 6 Plus is also discounted to $229 (down from $279). Walmart's standard retail pricing in itself is lower than what is on offer direct from Apple, which makes the additional $50 discount all the more enticing. The deal is only valid in-stores, and will reportedly run for one week. That's according to Bloomberg, although Design & Trend notes that the deals may be valid until February 2015. Walmart is also offering a $30 discount on the iPhone 5S, which is now available fo…

As expected, this newly leaked build of Windows 10 features a ton of improvements over what we've seen officially in the Windows 10 Technical Preview. And it makes me wish we could go back to the old days of weekly builds during Windows betas. Anyway, there is a lot here. But based on just a few minutes of tooling around in the build, I can make some corrections and additions to my previous article, Windows 10 Build 9901 Leaks with Numerous Changes. Wallpapers. There are five new wallpapers in all in this build, the new default wallpaper and four in the set Lines and Colors (replacing the ones from previous builds and from Windows 8.x). Former iTunes engineer subpoenaed to describe Apple's war against hackers
by Guest Chuong H Nguyen- 0 replies
Lawyers for the plaintiffs in the class-action iPod lawsuit against Apple subpoenaed a former iTunes engineer to testify Friday, hoping that his statement will help their side of the suit. In his testimony, Rod Schultz told the court that during his tenure at Apple, he worked on a project intended to block 100 percent of non-iTunes clients and third-party players that competed against Apple's iPod. Apple executives, including Steve Jobs in a video deposition taken months before his death, have repeatedly stated that stringent DRM policies were put into place as part of Apple's contract with the record labels. A report on the the Wall Street Journal described Schil…

Iowa to create digital driver's license app for your phone
by Guest Chuong H Nguyen- 0 replies
Iowa is leading the charge to become the first state in the nation to issue a digital ID. The state wants to create a smartphone-based driver's license via an app that could be installed on the iPhone or on devices using Google's Android operating system. The digital driver's license would co-exist with a traditional plastic license issued today. Early reports suggest that the Iowa Department of Transportation is aiming for a 2015 launch, but spokeswoman Andrea Henry says that the timing isn't clear as the state must wade through concerns about privacy and security. There are several concerns that are outlined as examples in a report published by the Wall Street J…

I'm installing build 9901 as I write this, but this newly leaked build of Windows 10 provides a glimpse at a lot of changes, including a full Cortana implementation, several new apps, some new UI treatments and an evolving new Store experience. For anyone still struggling with build 9879, this new build is a reminder that things are about to get a lot better. It's obviously early, but here's what I see so far. Screenshots are courtesy of Collection Book, plus one from MyCE. Setup. Unchanged from previous builds, but I don't think I ever called out the new look and feel of the out of box experience (OOBE), which actually debuted in build 9879. I assume this is design…

Case-Mate Tough Air Case for iPhone 6 Plus review
by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies
The iPhone 6 Plus can be an unwieldy device to carry around and using it one handed can create a rather precarious situation. The size alone has been reason for some people, even folks that never used to believe in cases, to start searching for the perfect one. I've spent the past week or so with the Tough Air Case by Case-Mate and if you want a nice compromise between protection and a slim profile, it may be a perfect fit. The Tough Air Case is easy to put on and take off, which is one of my first criteria for a case. Like many other people, I don't always want to have a case on my iPhone, but when the moment arises, I don't want a big fuss in order to use one. The To…
