Prices for the watch will start at $349 for the Sport version, and run all the way up to $17,000 for the highest-end configuration of the Watch Edition. There was lots of speculation that Apple would introduce a Retina MacBook Air. Instead, Apple reinvented the MacBook. Leading into today's Spring Forward event, oddsmakers suggested that a Retina MacBook Air was inevitable. Turns out they were wrong. Apple's gone back and reinvented the MacBook. Waiting in vain I remember waiting the day the iPad was released. I waited line at Apple's flagship Boston location, its Boylston Street store, staving off the April chill with a cup of Dunkin' Donuts coffee, dancing in place because I needed to empty my bladder. Yes, I'm one of those people who lines up for these things. What I didn't realize that April day, though …

An update to iOS 8.2 for iPhone coming today to bring support for Apple Watch. That support is coming in the form of the Apple Watch app. The app will be how you manage everything that you put onto the watch. Want a new app on your watch? Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. There's a specialized App Store for watch apps there. The Apple Watch app will also be how to configure which friends get priority placement on your wrist, and even which notifications come to your wrist from all of your apps. While we wouldn't mind the ability to manage those from the watch, there's something to be said for the ease of doing it all from your phone instead — it's mu…

Passwords are weak and often cracked. Two-factor authentication, which uses your phone number to send a secondary code you have to enter, is much stronger. I know first-hand how scary password hacks can be, but I still put off two-factor authentication for years — relying instead on a strong multi-digit 1Password-generated password — because it felt clunky and hard to set up. What if I lost access to my phone number because I was restoring my iPhone? What if I couldn't get network access for my two-factor code? Too much hassle, I thought. Authy changed my opinion on two-factor authentication: The app makes it far less terrifying to deal with; it also lives on both m…

Developers of the Star Trek MMO have created a memorial for recently deceased Spock actor Leonard Nimoy. Developers of the massively multiplayer game for Mac and Windows, Star Trek Online, have erected a tribute to Leonard Nimoy in the game. Engadget reports that Nimoy's recent passing inspired the developers to create tributes to Nimoy in locations in the game including the planets Vulcan, New Romulus and Earth. What's more, STO developer Cryptic Studios has adorned the same locations with plaques honoring the actors that've embodied other Starfleet recruits including DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Majell Barrett and series creator Gene Rodenberry. If it so…

The Apple Watch only has two hardware buttons but, just like the iPhone, there's a lot you can do with them! Tim Cook introduced the Apple Watch back in September and while much was shown off, much still remains to be seen. What we do know is that it has two buttons — a digital crown that can also be pushed, and a traditional hardware button beneath it (or above it if worn on the right wrist). Rumor has it, though, when you combine multiple and long presses, there'll be a lot you can do with it. Scroll and zoom Spin the digital crown to scroll through lists or zoom in or out of the home screen, maps, photos, and more. Like the click-wheel on the classic iPo…

If the Apple Watch shares the keynote stage on March 9, what could it share that stage with? The 2007 iPhone keynote also hosted the re-introduction of Apple TV (née iTV). The 2012 iPad 3 event also hosted the introduction of the Apple TV 3 (1080p). Last year's iPhones 6 event shared the stage with the Apple Watch, and the iPads with Touch ID shared the stage with the Retina 5K iMac. Apple has a history of double features. For the last couple of years, spring has been a quiet time for Apple. It wasn't until WWDC in June that the company took to the keynote stage. That made sense. Almost all their existing product lines were updated in the fall, leaving not much else…

Pandora is preparing to implement a day pass service that will allow customers to buy short-term access to ad-free music streaming. The day pass will take the form of a limited, non-recurring subscription to Pandora One. The plan currently involves a 24-hour pass for 99 cents, though Pandora will be testing that price, and could even implement a multi-day pass. The company confirmed plans to offer day passes in a statement to Gigaom: "Pandora is committed to delivering an effortless, personalized experience and we recognize some consumers may want an ad-free experience but don't necessarily want to commit to a subscription. This offering will allow consumers to…

Apple SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue reiterated how Apple Pay will work with the Apple Watch at Friday night's Golden State Warriors game. Cue talked in some detail about how Apple's payment service and wearable will work together, though most of this information was previously announced by Apple. The watch will need to be unlocked in order to use Apple Pay, which can be done either through Touch ID on your iPhone, or a passcode on the Apple Watch. Cue also said that you can choose if you'd like to enter your passcode every time you use Apple Pay on the watch, according to CNET: "You can [type a password] if you want to, but you won't normally h…

T-Mobile has sent out an invite tonight for a March 18 event in New York City that it promises will be "a real piece of work." There's no telling what T-Mobile has in store for this event, but the invite featuring a single tag-line falls in line with what we've seen from past uncarrier events. The only other hint that T-Mobile gives is a message saying it is "rewriting the rules of wireless again!" For a recap, during T-Mobile's most recent Uncarrier 8 event, the carrier unveiled Data Stash to the masses. In any event, join us on March 18 at 12:30pm Eastern when we'll report on whatever the Un-carrier has in store. In the meantime, feel free to speculate below…

It looks like Apple is set to make some changes concerning how schools manage the deployment of iPads for the upcoming school year. The reported changes would make it easier for schools to manage installing apps and restrict purchases made by students on their devices. According to an email obtained by MacRumors, Apple is implementing changes that would eliminate the need for each device to be tied to an Apple ID in order to install apps, easing the process of setting up devices before distribution to students. From the email: To simplify large deployments, including one-to-one and shared use, we want to make app distribution even easier. Today, Apple IDs ar…

Apple will apparently not offer a free tier for is oft-rumored subscription music service when it launches later this year. Company executives have reportedly been saying as much during negotiations with record labels. For current Beats Music subscribers, this wouldn't be any sort of change. Apple will reportedly still offer a trial period on the service, then charge after that. This is exactly how Beats Music works now. But Apple SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue and Beats' Jimmy Iovine have apparently been making aggressive arguments for this model in recent license negotiations for their upcoming streaming service, according to Re/code: Apple ex…

Many people who haven't yet had the chance to try an Apple Watch are still wondering whether or not it will have a place in their lives and workflows. Some don't think it will, at least not any time soon. Those who've been using it for a while, including Apple's CEO Tim Cook, say it's already become invaluable to them — That it saves them from having to pull their iPhone from their pockets or purses, that it helps them live better healthier lives, and that it helps them hook into all the digital things around them. Matthew Panzarino does a great job distilling that value on TechCrunch: One user told me that they nearly "stopped" using their phone during the day; …
