How to watch Blu-ray Discs on your Mac
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
Blu-ray Disc is a good format for video enthusiasts looking for picture and sound quality, and there's no shortage of devices that work with the format straight out of the box. But the Mac isn't one of them. So how can you get Blu-ray Discs to play back on the Mac? Read on for details. Steve Jobs famously called Blu-ray "a bag of hurt," suggesting Apple would take a wait and see approach on back in 2008. Apple sat on the fences for a long time and ultimately decided its Macs didn't need any optical storage at all, getting rid of internal DVD "SuperDrives" altogether (unless you count the lowly 13-inch standard MacBook Pro, still part of the product line but not updat…

by Guest Brad Smith- 0 replies
Today, in partnership with Sony Pictures, we announced that Xbox Video customers would have access to either buy or watch the movie “The Interview” starting at 10 a.m. PT today. The movie will be available to our customers in the United States who have an Xbox console, a Windows Phone, or a PC or tablet running Windows 8 or 8.1. As has been widely reported, Sony was the victim of a sophisticated cyber-attack with the intent of preventing the distribution of this film. Despite the effort to block this movie, it will now be shown in many theaters and will be available online. This is good news. A cyber-attack on anyone’s rights is a cyber-attack on everyone’s rights, and…

Not one hour after we heard YouTube had "tentatively agreed" to offer The Interview as a rental, Sony Pictures has confirmed the film will be available online starting today at 1PM ET. It'll be offered through YouTube Movies, Google Play, Xbox Videos, and a dedicated website SeeTheInterview.com. . The film will cost $5.99 to rent and $14.99 to own an HD copy. Notably absent from the list: Apple's iTunes, which reportedly said no despite White House involvement, and Sony's own PlayStation Network. In an lengthier statement, Google said that after talking with Sony, the two companies "agreed that we could not sit on the sidelines and allow a handful of people to d…

iMore 2014 Hall of Fame
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
“Hall of Fame” is a tricky moniker in the tech space, often overused and applied to things that haven’t been around very long. We disagree: If a developer, designer, or app makes a Hall of Fame, it should *matter*. It should take time to qualify, so impact and importance can be weighed with the context and clarity of history. It should also be a exclusive, giving well-deserved recognition to those who truly change the way we think and feel, who inspire and innovate, and who challenge and redefine. 25 years are required, following a recording’s debut, before it can qualify for the rock and roll hall of fame. 5 years are required, following a player’s retirement, befo…

He says a little about T-Mobile's Q3 numbers, including the carrier's record growth. Legere also went over some of the other initiatives from the Un-carrier this year that helped them stand out from the competition. How to download Photo Stream images on your Mac without iPhoto
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies
Until iCloud Photo Library makes its official debut on the Mac with the all-new Photos app next spring, the only way to access those images on OS X is via the iCloud.com Web app. Of course, if it's just the most recent images you want to see on your Mac, you can always view your Photo Stream on iPhoto; it downloads the last 1000 images you've taken or uploaded on any iCloud-connected device. But if you'd prefer not to open iPhoto every time you want to view, download, or share the latest picture from your iOS device, there's an easier way: Myphotostream. This little $7 OS X app (on sale for $5 over the holidays) lets you view your last 1000 or 30 days' worth of im…

Microsoft has quietly released a Windows 10 Preparation tool for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 which ostensibly makes sure your PC is ready for the new OS. But I'm pretty sure all this tool does is alert users when the latest preview build is available for download in January. I'm curious if it actually does more than that. So if you run this on your Windows 7- or Windows 8.1-based PC and see anything other than a "Your PC is now ready for Windows Technical Preview" message, please let us know in the comments. News of the tool comes courtesy of WinBeta, which was tipped off by a reader. But it's not clear what actual preparation it does per se. I would guess it just…
