Reflect on the past you never had with Choice of Robots
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies
There are plenty of games you could pick up and play on the eve of the new year. Do you play an: A) RPG B) party game C) co-op game D) first person shooter E) text-based interactive sci-fi novel about robotic sentience, nostalgia, and the very meaning of humanity Today, I picked E and downloaded Choice of Robots, a text-adventure game that captivated my mind and won my heart. As part of working at iMore, I have a lot of little games lined up to test, play, and otherwise review. I wasn't planning on actually playing Choice of Robots today, but after just about every one of my game-loving friends started praising the text adventure, I sat down and opened it. …

What we want to see from Apple in 2015
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
With 2015 right around the corner, there's lots we could wish for. We could wish for the moon—or at the very least, a hoverboard prototype to show up at CES 2015. But as much fun as it is to wildly speculate on pie-in-the-sky ideas, we're going to travel a bit closer to Earth for our 2015 predictions. Here's what the editors of iMore actually want to see from Apple next year — unicorns and 50-inch Gene Munster-branded Apple TVs need not apply. iPhone Peter: I'd like to see Apple return to the four-inch form factor with a phone that's just as good as the iPhone 6. Not everyone wants a bigger phone, but I'm sure some people would like the sleeker design and Apple …

TWiT 24 hr. New Year's party!
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
I'm in Petaluma, California, just an hour or so north of San Francisco, where Leo Laporte and the TWiT are doing their annual 24 hrs. of New Year's party. That's where they start with the first time zone to hit 2015 and keep going until the last time zone hits it. Yeah, marathon. But it's all for a great cause — to raise money for UNICEF. So far I've done Dance Central with Chad Johnson, badly, had a panel discussion on whether robots will one day eat us with Steve Gibson, Jeff Jarvis, and Randal Swartz, argued iPhone 6 vs. iPhone 6 Plus, and gotten beat at chess. And it's just gone 9:30am here. There's lots more to come, including a segment where I'll be attempting to…

Apple faces lawsuit over the impact of iOS 8 on device storage space
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
Apple is facing a new class-action lawsuit in California, this time from users unhappy about how much storage space iOS 8 takes up on their devices. Their complaint focuses not only on newer iOS devices like the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, but older devices as well. From SiliconBeat: Depending on the device they purchase, consumers who install iOS 8 allegedly receive substantially less storage than advertised, ranging from 18.1 percent for the iPhone 5s to 23.1 percent for the iPod, according to the complaint. The plaintiffs are seeking damages from Apple, and hope to force the company to change policies regarding how users are informed about their device'…

New York authorities may start accepting Apple Pay for parking ticket fines
by Guest Rich Edmonds- 0 replies
New York City authorities are looking into accepting Apple Pay - as well as other gateways - for parking fines, making it easier for those affected by the ten million tickets issued annually ($30 billion in revenue) to conveniently pay up. Should the payment gateway be supported, drivers will be able to use their iPhones to pay fines instantly. Should the city's finance department opt to support Apple's service, an up-to-date system will be able to take advantage of technology available today, as opposed to paying via mail, online (reportedly not mobile friendly) or in person. It's also hoped the city will be able to cut down on late penalties for unpaid violations. …

Judge dismisses Apple employee labor suit over time spent in security checks
by Guest Dan Thorp-Lancaster- 0 replies
It looks like Apple employees engaged in a potential lawsuit against the tech giant will have to go back to the drawing board. The case, in which Apple employees alleged that they lost wages while being forced to endure long, mandatory security checks, was thrown out by U.S. District Court Judge William Alsop. Judge Alsop cited a recent Supreme Court decision in a similar case against Amazon in which the court ruled that workers were not owed lost wages because the time spent in security checkpoints was not a part of what they were paid to do. Second, named plaintiffs Dean Pelle, Adam Kilker, and Brandon Fisher's individualclaims under the FLSA, New York, Massa…

It's almost the new year, and to celebrate, we're going to try starting a new section on photography tips. Former iMore editor Leanna Lofte used to run a regular column back in the day, and we've had multiple requests to start it up again, so here goes. I'll be covering both iPhoneography and DSLR tips here, though we're going to start off with some how-tos for the portable camera most of you have in your pocket right now: The iPhone. Ten tips for taking great iPhone photographs The iPhone is a fantastic device for snapping pictures: It has excellent hardware, smart software, and it's easy enough for your grandmother to use. It has limitations, as any camera does,…

2014 year in review roundtable
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies

2014 is nearly at an end, and what a year it was: New iPhones. New iPads. The 5K Retina Mac. iOS 8. Continuity. OS X Yosemite. Return of the Mac Mini. Tim Cook's Bloomberg piece. A lot's happened in twelve months, which means there's plenty for your iMore staff to reflect on. Here are our thoughts on our favorite tech happenings from 2014, our most reviled moments, the things we wanted but didn't get, and more. Your favorite thing from 2014? Peter: Continuity. We've been hearing about the "iOSification" of OS X for years, postulated as this singularity where iOS and OS X would merge into one amorphous thing. That hasn't happened. Instead Apple trumped us by maki…

Twitter has a new advertising channel: your following list
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies
No matter your school of thought on how you use Twitter, the list of people you follow now includes advertising. The first customer: MasterCard. On the web, and in the official Twitter apps for iPhone and Android, you'll find that you, and everybody else, have MasterCard as a promoted entry in your Following list. Now, this doesn't mean that you're actually following MasterCard — they have just 388,000 followers and not the quarter-million user base of Twitter. It just means that MasterCard has managed to get an ad inserted in every following list tempting you to follow them back (at least on the iOS and web interfaces it's clear that you're not actually following th…

Gmail service sees partial restoration in China
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

It appears that Gmail service has been partially restored in China. It was reported yesterday that the Chinese government was blocking access to the service through third-party apps, while the Gmail website has been blocked for years. While many are reporting that service has been restored, others are still experiencing delays or outages. From the Financial Times: The episode ended as mysteriously as it began — users of Gmail via POP and Imap servers, who had been frustrated for days trying to send and receive email, suddenly saw their inboxes full again, though some were still reporting delays in receiving emails and others said that their service had not retu…

At the Core: Holidays and the connected home
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies

Greetings and happy December 29, iMore! The major winter holidays have mostly passed us by, and hopefully you've survived — and dare I hope, enjoyed — the family get-togethers, the excess food, and terrible party games. Some of you are undoubtedly back at work today, while others are still enjoying the last fragments of a winter vacation. Me, I'm somewhere in-between. Clearly, I'm at work today (well, that, or robo-Serenity has gotten much better at writing columns in the last two weeks) but I'm doing so from my parents' new house, sitting on the couch in front of our Christmas tree. It's a nice view — much comfier than my office back in Massachusetts. But staring a…

Syfy's 12 Monkeys to sync up with your Hue lighting system
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

If you own some Philips Hue light bulbs, and plan to watch Syfy's 12 Monkeys series when it premieres next month, then you're in for a special treat. Using the Syfy Sync app, Hue owners will be able to sync their lights with episodes of 12 Monkeys, with the lighting changing at key moments in the program. Syfy did the same thing with Hue lights during Sharknado 2. The app is connected to your Hue bridge, and listens to your current program. During particular scenes, such as extreme weather, or intense violence, Syfy Sync will change the color and intensity of your bulbs. Syfy's 12 Monkeys will premiere in the U.S. on Friday, January 16, 2015 at 9pm ET. The SyFy Sy…

Chevron to bring Apple Pay to its gas pumps in 2015
by Guest Dan Thorp-Lancaster- 0 replies

It looks like your pay at the pump experience might soon involve an NFC chip and an Apple logo. According to a tweet sent out by Chevron, the oil company is looking to integrate Apple Pay into its gas pumps at some point in early 2015. @SingAsana We are working alongside Apple to develop solutions to integrate with Apple Pay at the pump by early 2015. — Chevron (@Chevron) December 29, 2014 This would be an extension of Apple's current partnership with Chevron, which has already integrated Apple Pay at the registers of its Texaco and Chevron gas stations. Apple Pay has been slowly garnering more and more support over the previous months. Just this morning, w…

How to copy/paste between your Macs and iOS devices
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies

A few weeks ago, I put a call out on Twitter for Continuity-based copy/paste apps: My kingdom for a Continuity-based copy/paste utility. Does this exist somewhere? — Serenity Caldwell (@settern) December 4, 2014 Since 2010, I'd been using Syncopy to sync clipboards between my Macs; unfortunately, the app had been virtually untouched since its release, and it got buggier with every OS X release. And that's not even talking about its iOS support, which was minimal and very quickly outmoded. So, 2015 around the corner. Time for a new app to sync my clipboard. What better resource to turn to than Twitter? And though I didn't find a Continuity-based app, the iCl…
