LaCie shows both its rugged and fashionable sides with new portable drives
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
Just in time for CES 2015 Seagate's LaCie brand has announced two new portable hard drives, the Rugged RAID and the Mirror. The Rugged RAID features Thunderbolt 1 and USB 3.0 compatibility, and comes with 4TB of storage. It comes with two drives and is preconfigured in RAID 0. It can also keep your data safe if one of your drives fails. According to LaCie: The LaCie Rugged features RAID 1 (mirrored mode), which is where the data is duplicated across the two drives. So, even if a single drive fails in the field, the data remains accessible from the other drive. This is especially helpful to on–the–go professionals with limited laptop capacity. The LaCie Rugged can se…

Some teens turn to AirDrop instead of Snapchat and Instagram
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
Sharing photos is a popular pastime for teens with smartphones, and there's no shortage of services to cater to them — Snapchat and Instagram remain popular options. But there's another way to share photos and other files that may be picking up steam, especially among young people with iPhones: AirDrop. AirDrop, built right into iOS, enables iPhone users to exchange files with one another without relying on a separate app or third-party service. The advantage over services like Instagram and Snapchat is that you don't have to have usernames or set up specific accounts to use it. Maya Kosoff went home for the holidays and discovered that her teenage relatives are usi…

Hearthstone: Ten tips, hints, and tricks to building a killer deck
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies
Blizzard's Hearthstone has quietly — or perhaps not so quietly — taken the gaming world by storm. The free-to-play title combines everything great about skill-based card games with gameplay as addicting as the company's MMOs, and it's been a blast to get acquainted with. Like many of Blizzard's other titles, to excel at Hearthstone you need good gear (in this case, cards), smart strategy, and some time on your hands to put it all together. Here are some of our best tips from that arena to get you battling like a pro. 1. Trust in the Mage The Mage is the default starter class in Hearthstone for a reason: The deck's core cards are pretty well-rounded and the …

How to play iOS games on your TV
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies
As much as I love playing games on my iPhone and iPad, I sometimes miss the big-screen experience of a console system. If you own a second-generation Apple TV or later, however, it's a simple trick to send your iOS game to your television. It's true that bigger screens and bigger sounds can immerse you into a game the way a 4.7-inch or 10-inch screen with headphones can't quite manage — heck, it's one of the reasons I still own an Xbox. But you don't have to settle for playing your iOS games on their original screen if you'd prefer something more exciting. To do so, you just need to use Apple's AirPlay Mirroring technology (available for the iPhone 4s or later, iP…

Resolve to take better care of your Mac in 2015 - here's how!
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
New year, new resolutions. If "take better care of my Mac" was on your list of things to do, here are some practical tips to make that happen. I've split this list up into three topics: Back up your Mac, batten down the hatches and improve your security, and clean up the crud (get rid of data you don't need). Back up your Mac First thing first: Back up your Mac right away. Assuming you don't already have a backup, it's time to make one and save what's important to you. There are some great ways to do it that don't involve too much work on your part: Using Apple's built-in, free Time Machine software is the best place to start, and you can pair it with an in…

Extend the life of your MacBook power adapter with Python
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
As I've made my way through MacBooks, MacBook Pros, and MacBook Airs over the years, I've gone through a lot of power adapters. They typically wear out and fray in one of two places: Either near the MagSafe adapter, up near the MacBook, or down near the transformer. Recently I became aware of a new product, the Python cord protector, that purports to resolve that latter issue. There's no question that over time, power adapter cables can wear and fray. Replacing them isn't cheap — $80 for a new Apple-branded adapter. For $11, you can have a bit more peace of mind with the Python cord protector. Apple's MagSafe power adapters may save you from breaking the cable whe…

Conquer your fitness resolutions with Fitstar Yoga
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies

While my fitness resolutions tend to be based around the roller derby season rather than New Year's, they remain a popular January tradition. If you're looking for a fitness resolution for the new year, I'm going to suggest something for you right here: Fitstar Yoga. I picked up Fitstar's original personal training app last year for some basic fitness outside of my skating, and it's remained a great little app for doing just that without the need for a gym or in-house personal trainer. Now, Fitstar's come out with a yoga-themed sequel to its popular fitness app, aptly named Fitstar Yoga. It's built around yoga teacher Tara Stiles's Strala instruction, which us…

Photos section re-appears on iCloud.com [Updated]
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

Update: The Photos section appears to have returned for some users on both the public iCloud site, as well as the iCloud.com beta site. Original story: It appears that the Photos section on the iCloud website has disappeared. Photos on iCloud.com has been the only way to access your iCloud Photo Library from a desktop or laptop since it launched in November. The Photos section is also missing from the iCloud beta website. Photos on iCloud.com was never supposed to be the only solution for viewing and uploading photos to your Photo Library from your PC or Mac. A new Photos app for Mac is supposed to launch sometime early this year for OS X Yosemite users. It wil…

Bono: Sorry, not sorry, for free iTunes album release
by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies
Bono, the lead singer of U2, still seems to be rather hurt that some iTunes users were upset that their latest album, Songs of Innocence, was made available for free for a limited time on Apple's service in 2014. In his personal overview of the past year that was posted on Thursday on the U2 site, Bono praises Apple for its efforts, while at the same time comments on how some iTunes users, in his opinion, just don't get what the band trying to do. Bono's statement, under the title 'I is for iTunes", says: Our album was to be like a bottle of milk dropped at the door of anyone interested in music and iTunes. As I understand it, the journey from the front door to…

FCC publishes documents detailing unreleased Apple iBeacon hardware
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

The FCC has published a number of documents with details on an unreleased Apple-produced piece of iBeacon hardware. Some documents for this hardware were spotted last summer, but today's release includes the user manual. It's unknown what this whether this device is meant as a product for consumers or business partners, or if it's intended as hardware for developers. From 9to5Mac: However, time has elapsed such that the rest of Apple's submitted documents are now available to the public. Vitally, this includes a user manual which immediately signals that this iBeacon hardware was meant for developers, presumably to test iBeacon integration in their own apps. It's un…

Google has openly published a Windows 8.1 vulnerability that allows low-level users to gain administrator privileges. The security flaw was revealed earlier this week despite one big problem: there's still no fix from Microsoft. As such, the elevated privileges vulnerability remains a legitimate threat to some Windows customers. Google says it gave Redmond plenty of time to address the problem before the code went public on December 29th. It's been 90 days since the security hole was filed as part of Google's Project Zero initiative, which is dedicated to uncovering weaknesses in software before hackers can exploit them. Microsoft was told about the issue on Septem…

Apple sued for false advertising by plaintiffs that don't understand iPhone digital storage
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies
A pair of iPhone owners from Miami are suing Apple and seeking class action status in doing so, alleging that Apple has falsely advertised how much storage is actually available on the phone. They're not alleging that the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus actually have less physical storage than Apple claims, no, they're perturbed to the point of legal action that when Apple advertises a 16GB iPhone it only comes with around 13GB of free space out of the box because that pesky iOS 8 needs to take up space. Said the plaintiff's attorney, according to the Wall Street Journal: "In reality, nothing close to the advertised capacity of the Devices is available to end users. …

You can now easily adapt any new post-2012 iMac for VESA mounting
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies
NewerTech now has a new adapter that makes it much easier — nay, possible — to mount any 2012-or-newer iMac, even the new Retina 5K iMac with the universal VESA system. The NuMount VESA is a machined aluminum bracket that clamps through the power-cable passthrough in the iMac's stand, adding both a quartet of screw holes for a 100mm x 100mm VESA mount and a shelf above that for storing items you want nearby but neither want to see or need to reach (say, an external hard drive for backups). The NuMount VESA exists because iMacs purchased since 2012 had to have VESA mounting specified when ordering — it's either an attached stand or four screw holes drilled into the ba…
