Olympus talks app-based photo editing with their cameras
by Guest Russell Holly- 0 replies
While it feels like the big thing at CES this year is letting your smartphone act as the center of your connected world, the folks at Olympus are perfectly happy having their cameras do all the heavy lifting. Many Olympus cameras come with WiFi onboard now, and with that comes the opportunity to use your phone to help with photography. The Olympus Share app lets you use your phone as a remote, but you can also pull the photo straight to your phone and edit whatever shot you have just taken. It's an ideal setup for those who are interested in that instant share from a smartphone, but still want to shoot with a more capable camera. It also doesn't hurt to take a look at …

TalkTalk has acquired both Blinkbox, the movie streaming and rental business, and Tesco Broadband from the UK supermarket. The cross-platform on-demand service that Blinkbox offers customers in the UK will put TalkTalk in a strengthened position against competitors, as well as bolster its own range of content. The company will integrate Tesco's old services into its own TV offering with immediate effect. As noted above, TalkTalk also acquired the Tesco broadband and voice business, adding significant numbers (75,000 internet and 20,000 respectively) to the already-established user base. Microsoft is planning to radically overhaul its web browser in Windows 10. Sources familiar with the company’s Windows plans tell The Verge that the new browser, codenamed Spartan, will include a host of new features not found in rival browsers. Chief among the plans for Spartan is new inking support that allows Windows 10 users to annotate a web page with a stylus and send the notes and annotations to a friend or colleague. The web note service will be powered by Microsoft’s OneDrive cloud storage, meaning notes will be stored on a copy of a web page that can be accessed by any browser across multiple platforms. As annotations are shared, multiple users can doodle on…

CES Day 2 round up
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies

The big announcements of CES 2015 are out of the way, and that means it's time for the real surprises. If we're honest, most of the announcements this year were relatively tame — iterations on what's come before. But it's everything else that's had the potential to surprise, and surprise us it has. Apple will reportedly expand iOS beta testing to include Apple Store employees
by Guest Dan Thorp-Lancaster- 0 replies
We've already seen Apple open up testing a tad more with a public beta program for OS X Yosemite, and now it looks like the tech giant is set to open up a bit more on the iOS front as well. According to a new report, Apple will soon extend testing of pre-release iOS builds to its retail store employees. The report comes from 9to5Mac's Mark Gurman, who says the following: Apple will begin providing select retail store employees access to upcoming versions of iOS in order to widen its pre-release testing program, according to multiple sources. The program will begin in the near-future with an upcoming iOS release, perhaps version 8.2, which is slated to be released…

Apple alerts developers to App Store price increases in the E.U., Canada, Norway
by Guest Dan Thorp-Lancaster- 0 replies
While we reported back in December that pricing changes were on the way for App Store customers in the European Union, it looks like Apple is set to raise prices again for not only E.U. customers, but also those in Canada, Norway, and Russia. The news comes from an email obtained by AppleInsider, in which Apple alerts developers to the forthcoming changes. AppleInsider writes: According to the notification sent out by Apple's App Store team, provided to AppleInsider by reader Gregg, prices on the company's digital storefront will be increased in the EU, Canada, and Norway, while customers in Iceland are set to see a decrease. Russia will also receive price chan…

Bang & Olufsen are showing off their new bluetooth headphones, the BeoPlay H8
by Guest Russell Holly- 0 replies
Wired headphones are still going to offer the best possible audio experience, but as people become more and more mobile the case for a decent pair of wireless headphones becomes increasingly clear. This year at CES the folks from Bang & Olufsen are showing off their new line of wireless over the ear headphones, which have been dubbed BeoPlay H8. Aside from the classic design and high end build materials, which lets be honest is expected from Bang & Olufsen, the headphones are entirely touch responsible. The volume controls and track management happens with swipes and taps, and the battery life on these headphones promise 14 hours of high quality playback on a si…

Microsoft has confirmed that its next Windows 10 Technical Preview will be available to download as an ISO. Current releases have been seeded through Windows Update to those registered for the Windows Insiders program only, meaning they cannot perform clean installs on freshly-wiped systems. Microsoft did eventually provide an ISO release for its most recent Windows 10 preview — build 9879 — but it came several weeks after the Windows Update rollout. But Gabriel Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, has confirmed that the next build will be available in ISO form from day one. That means users can download the ISO and either put it on a flash drive or burn it to …

iMore presents CESongs
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies

Seeing amazing products is cool and all, but the best part of CES is getting to hang out with Rene, Georgia, and Anthony on a daily basis. We've been making silly videos for the cool booths we've seen on the show floor, but Tuesday night we took it a step further, recapping our activities with a ukulele song. Really, iMore, this is your fault: You asked for more CES songs, so here you go — the ultimate terrible CESong, starring yours truly, Georgia, Anthony, and Rene. We wrote it in advance rather than singing off the cuff this time, though I'm not sure if that helped or hurt us. Regardless, I hope you folks enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed recording it! Talk about…

Qardio's medical-grade body monitors are built for accuracy
by Guest Russell Holly- 0 replies
While your average fitness monitor or health tracker is great for keeping a daily tally of how many steps you've taken or how well you slept last night compared to the night before, you can't really take this information to your doctor and expect that data to be useful. CES is positively overflowing with this technology this year, but a lot of it is deliberately made for personal use only. Medical professionals rely on finely tuned instruments for their data collection, and in most cases that equipment is not something you can carry around in your pocket. The folks at Qardio are hoping to bridge that gap with their health tracking equipment, claiming that their hardware i…

On Apple news during CES
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies

Apple hasn't attended the Consumer Electronics Show since Nirvana's "Nevermind" topped the Billboard charts, but that doesn't stop the company from casting a very long shadow over the event. It seems that even now, Apple news and rumors have a way of weeding themselves into the tech blogosphere during the very time that everyone's attention should be directed elsewhere. Of course, that trend stayed consistent this week with 9to5Mac's juicy 12-inch MacBook Air rumor. To study the phenomenon, Graham Spencer has compiled a history of Apple news and rumors during CES dating back to 2007. It's an interesting roundup. From '07 to '09, Apple introduced the iPhone, new…

AT&T's new Rollover Data plan for its Mobile Share Value users starts Jan. 25
by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies

AT&T will begin offering its own Rollover Data plan for all of its 50 million Mobile Share Value customers starting on Sunday, Jan. 25 at no additional cost. This news follows that of T-Mobile which announced a similar plan in December for its customers called Data Stash. AT&T offered an example of how its Rollover Data plan will work for its customers: If you have four lines and have a 15GB AT&T Mobile Share Value Plan and only use 10GB in a given month, you'll roll over 5GB and have a total of 20GB available to use within the next month. If you were to only use 10GB in the second month, you'll again roll over 5GB and have a total of 20GB available…

iOS 8 now installed on 68% of devices
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
Apple has released the latest App Store distribution numbers, which give a breakdown of what percentage of devices are using which version of iOS, and iOS 8 has climbed a bit in the past few weeks. Versions of Apple's latest major release now stand at 68% of total iOS installations as of Jan. 5, 2015. iOS 7 now stands at 29%, with iOS 6 and earlier holding a total of 4% of installs. It seems that iOS 7 is most affected by iOS 8's continued growth, with iOS 6 and earlier remaining steady. When last we checked iOS 7 was hovering around 33% of installs, with iOS 8 capturing 63%. OhMiBod's connected vibrators buzz in sync with partner's heartbeat, controllable by smartwatch
by Guest Simon Sage- 0 replies
OhMiBod is expanding the functionality of their Bluetooth and Wi-Fi-connected sex toys at CES by announcing a new smartwatch app. With it, users will be able to remotely control vibrators from near or far, though that's in line with their existing phone app. The really cool stuff is how the smartwatch app for Android and iOS will read a user's heartbeat and create vibrations based on that pulse. Alternatively, the app can read ambient noise (such as music) and produce vibrations from that data as well. OhMiBod's current Club Vibe massagers already do that sort of thing. OhMiBod's connected blueMotion vibrator goes for $95. More info on OhMiBod's new apps are below…

The folks at Basis have updated their design but have lost none of the original drive that made their first fitness and sleep tracker important in the first place. Basis Peak is an upgrade in every conceivable way, from the solid design update and fantastically responsive display to the hardware responsible for data collection. Garmin talks VivoFit 2, personal bands, and Connect IQ
by Guest Russell Holly- 0 replies
There are fitness trackers, and then there are Fitness Trackers. It's fair to say the folks at Garmin know a thing or two about fitness tracking, since they've been making GPS watches since 2003. Their most recent efforts demonstrate clearly how much time they have had to perfect adding complex parts to their watches, if for no other reason than the battery life on these products is just outstanding. The Garmin VivoFit promised a year of battery life on a single charge, and it's successor is taking that same bold claim and adding a bit of style. CES for Garmin this year means showing off the entire collection, which includes everything from the $130 VivoFit 2 to the $5…

Martian and Guess double down on smartwatches with real watch style #CES2015
by Guest Russell Holly- 0 replies
While Google and Apple have made it clear they plan to make smartwatches a touchscreen-focused experience, there's still plenty of companies out there working hard to embed smarter features into traditional watch designs. The folks at Guess have decided that the way Martian Smartwatches has been doing things is the way to go, and so their new partnership has created a whole new line of devices aimed at both style-focused users and several options for women. During CES this year the two companies are showing off what that partnership looks like, and why it matters. Adam and Rene took a quick look at what makes the Martian platform special, and it turns out everything comes…

Thalmic's Myo Armband wants to be your wireless controller #CES2015
by Guest Russell Holly- 0 replies

While still mostly an accessory for developers to play with and build new experiences with, the Myo armband has been on the short list of gadgets to keep an eye on for a while now. The promise of an arm cuff that responds to your hand gestures and controls anything from your thermostat to the channel on the television is interesting enough, but it looks like the Thalmic Labs folks at CES this year are ready to show off some mobile integration. Check out the video as Rene and Adam get the rundown on all things Myo, but remember that these are still pre-order only for the moment. At the absolute least, it's great to see the forward momentum. A new report claims that Apple will begin training some of its retail store employees in mid-February on the upcoming Apple Watch, ahead of a planned launched for the end of March in the US for the highly anticipated smartwatch. The report comes from 9to5Mac, citing unnamed sources. It claims: One or two representatives from many Apple Stores in the United States, depending on store and market size, will be sent to Apple offices in either Cupertino, California or Austin, Texas to learn first-hand about the Watch. These training programs will take place between February 9th and February 16th. In the couple of days preceding the official Apple Watch release date,…
