OS X Yosemite review: 3 months later
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
Three months ago Apple senior vice-president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, stood up on the Town Hall stage and said OS X Yosemite would be available that very day. We posted our OS X Yosemite review as soon as it went live, based on almost four months of beta testing. And we've had an additional 90 days to live with the final version. So, what have we grown to love and what has gotten on our nerves? It's time to check in on Apple's latest version of the Macintosh operating system, three months later... Design Ren: I remember letting out an audible gasp when Apple revealed the new set of Yosemite icons on stage at WWDC last year. Not out of surpri…

On Monday, January 12, Microsoft teasingly tweeted "Keep on starting. The Start Menu is back on [HASHTAG]#Windows10[/HASHTAG]. More coming 1.21.15." Of course, if you've been following along since Windows 10 was unveiled at the event in San Francisco on September 30, 2014, you already know that the Start Menu is front and center in the new operating system. Certainly, a host of other new features were revealed: A new Task view button, multiple desktops, Snap enhancements, apps that run in a window -- just to name a few. However, the return of the Start Menu definitely stole the show as one of the more news worthy features. So, it makes sense that Microsoft would use…

Zano is a swarm-capable autonomous mini drone controlled by your phone
by Guest Russell Holly- 0 replies
We're no strangers to smartphone-controlled flying machines around these parts, especially those of us who have wandered the halls of CES, but the folks at Zano are promising something wildly different form the current experience with their mini quadcopter. While most flying experiences with smartphones happen at a 1:1 ration, Zano wants to give smartphone owners the ability to control a swarm of autonomous drones just by waving the phone in your hand around. To accomplish this, the tiny drone is packing GPS, sonar, IR, and an HD camera to capture your adventures from above. The collision detection smarts in this little casing, combined with additional instructions from t…

Kubi 2.0 is all about quick setup and seamless telepresence
by Guest Russell Holly- 0 replies
It has been a bit since we last checked in on the folks at Revolve Robotics, and they have certainly been busy. The Kubi telepresence robot has been upgraded to version 2.0, and the upgrade is all about smoother software and a better connection experience. Since the experience is once again good enough to work during CES, it's clear there's a strong platform guiding this setup. As we learned from Marcus Rosenthal of Revolve Robotics, this new update is designed to make it possible for users to just drop a tablet into the dock and hand off control to the user on the other end. Long term, the hope is that this setup is simple enough that users would be able to have either m…

Orbotix gets kids into robots with Ollie and SPRK
by Guest Russell Holly- 0 replies
We've jokingly referred to the robotic toys made by Orbotix as the world's best cat toys, but the truth is there's a ton that can be done with these little rolling robots. Sphero has a huge third party following with dozens of apps that let you do everything from roll your ball in an augmented reality maze through the camera on your phone to picking the ball up and using it as a controller for games on your phone. Ollie, their brand new robot, is a little more focused on fun by offering more speed and some fun optimizations. If driving these robots around and chasing your cat aren't enough to get your attention, the Orbotix SPRK (that's Schools Parents Robots Kids) progra…

Pioneer's NEX stereos are much more than just CarPlay
by Guest Russell Holly- 0 replies
For years there's been this growing sentiment among smartphone users who have to drive on a regular basis, and that sentiment usually involved being able to just dock your phone in the car and use the larger screen in the dash to use the things your phone already does very well. As cool as it would be for the infotainment center in the car to just be the receptacle for our phones, many of these in-dash systems do a lot more than what we've seen from CarPlay so far. As a result, at CES this year, we saw several systems where the smartphone bits are treated like an app on a larger system. A perfect example of this is the new Pioneer systems, much like the one we have a h…

On Wednesday, Microsoft will show off Windows 10, the next version of its decades-old operating system. There's a lot at stake. This may be Microsoft's last chance to prove to the world that Windows still matters. A decade ago more than 90% of devices on the internet ran Windows. With the rise of smartphones, and tablets running smartphone operating systems like iOS and Android, that number is down to 15 percent. Developers had to develop for Windows if they wanted to make money. Now, it's one of many choices, and in mobile it's an afterthought. In fact, the rise of mobile devices has made the entire idea of an operating system seem a lot less relevant. People d…

by Guest Suzanne Choney- 0 replies

This week, we’ve got stories about technology that will help both retailers and customers with the information they need and want; new affordable Lumia smartphones with Windows Phone 8.1 on board; and an important date for developers to mark on their calendars to register for Build 2015. Hardee’s and other companies are harnessing the power of Windows to do everything from providing self-service kiosks where customers can order up their burgers (yes, with fries, please!) – and get them faster – to creating a smart shelf and a tablet-enabled shopping cart. Microsoft shared the announcements at the National Retail Federation annual convention in New York City. Also annou…

iBooks seeing 1 million new users every week since launch of iOS 8
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

Apple's iBooks ebook store is getting more and more popular. On stage today at the Digital Book World Conference, Apple's iBooks Director Keith Moerer said that the ebooks platform is seeing an average of 1 million new users per week, which he attributes partially to Apple embedding iBooks into iOS 8, according to Digital Book World on Twitter: .@iBooks is seeing 1 million new users a week, thanks in no small part to #Apple's embedding the platform into iOS 8 #DBW15 Moerer also noted that more book sales are coming from iPhones, rather than iPads, where the platform first made its debut. He also talked about the growth of independent digital publishing, as well…

Blossom wants to make your sprinkler system smarter
by Guest Russell Holly- 0 replies
Everything wants to be smarter at CES this year, including sprinkler systems. If you have a sprinkler system connected to your home, you know that managing the included system takes a strangely significant chunk of time, unless you just leave everything on timers and let whatever happens next happen. Smarter sprinkler systems offer the ability to automate a lot of the scheduling and planning from maintaining a sprinkler system, and Blossom's system for accomplishing this goal is one of the better examples out there today. The hardware installs easily for most people, but it's the app that really makes this worth checking out. Blossom keeps an eye on weather patterns to ad…

Office apps for iPhone and iPad now support VoiceOver for reading and editing
by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies
Microsoft has updated the Office apps for the iPhone and iPad, specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint, to version 1.5. This update will allow users to read and edit documents in all three apps using the VoiceOver feature in iOS. This should allow users that are visually impaired to have better access to Office apps, as VoiceOver should give them audio information on what's happening on their screen. In addition, users who sign up for a paid Office 365 subscription from inside any of the Office apps will now get one month free. Microsoft previously allowed iPhone and iPad Office users to edit and create new documents for free but a paid Office 365 subscription offers…

by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

Be My Eyes is a new app for the iPhone and iPad that lets sighted people help blind people see. The app is both for those that need help and for those that want to help, connecting them with both audio and video through the Be My Eyes network. When you request help from Be My Eyes, which can be done easily with a two-finger double tap on your phone's screen, it will connect you to the first available volunteer. It may take time to find someone, given that Be My Eyes relies on real people. The audio-video connection will let you show your volunteer video from your phone's rear-facing iSight camera, letting them tell you what they see. Sighted users wishing to help …

Apple opened a new store location in the city of Zhengzhou last week. In an interview with the state-run news agency Xinhua, Ahrendts said that these new stores will open before the start of the Chinese New Year, which begins on February 19. One of them will open on January 24 in the Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, near Shanghai. Xinhua's report said: Ahrendts said Apple is hiring in China. by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

Kickstarter's official app for iOS has hit version 2.0, bringing a few updates to the design. The app now also has full iPad support, letting you track your favorite projects and join new ones no matter what device you're using. While the project page design remains the same, Kickstarter has added a new way to view projects, presenting them as cards. Tapping the title in the top left of the screen in the overview will give you different sections to view, such as Staff Picks, Starred, and Everything. You can also choose a category. Projects can then be sorted by "Magic", popularity, most recent, those ending soon, and the most well-funded. After selecting the project …

Apple Pay now used by nearly 800,000 Bank of America customers
by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies

Apple Pay has apparently been a big hit for Bank of America. The company announced today that nearly 800,000 of its customers have used Apple's payment service since it launched in October, and those users have added about 1.1 million cards. The numbers were released, without additional comment, as part of Bank of America's fourth quarter 2014 financial earnings. However, they would seem to indicate a growing acceptance of Apple Pay, which is currently available for use on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. In related news, more grocery stores in the US now support Apple Pay. Shoppers at 217 Lucky, Save Mart and FoodMaxx locations in Northern California and Nevada ca…

Apple reaches settlement in class action suit over wage suppression
by Guest Dan Thorp-Lancaster- 0 replies
Apple, along with several other tech companies, has reached a settlement deal today in a class action suit concerning anti-poaching policies that may have suppressed wages among tech workers in Silicon Valley. While it's unclear what the terms of the settlement are, the judge in the case had already rejected quite a large sum in a previous settlement proposal. From Reuters: Workers accused the firms of conspiring to avoid poaching each other's employees. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California, last year rejected a $324.5 million settlement of the lawsuit as too low after one of the named plaintiffs objected. The suit has been going on for a w…
