Secret keyboard shortcuts: Twenty tips to speed up typing on your iPhone!
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Apple popularized virtual, multitouch keyboards with the original iPhone and the brilliant work of the engineer who created it. Since then they've improved text entry with editing and insertion options, and the keyboard itself with a new, predictive engine. They've also added the option for custom keyboards. Yet not everyone knows every feature hidden in the keyboard and text editing controls. Once you learn them, however, your typing really starts to fly! Note: Not every option is available in every app, and while the iPad contains all the iPhone shortcuts, it also contains additional features like the split keyboard and and flick quote. 1. Toggle your settings …

by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies

Still coping with persistent rumors about Apple prototyping ARM-based Mac, Intel's chief financial officer, Stacy Smith reaffirmed the company's position that Apple would take a big performance hit if they moved away from Intel's chips. According to Business Insider: "Our leadership over the rest of the industry is extending," Smith said. "We're not delayed relative to the industry. We're actually ahead of the industry." "For a customer like Apple you'd have to take a big step off performance to step off our architecture," Smith said. "That is what in essence enables us to win across different customers." Apple prototypes everything that's sensible for a com…

How to type special characters and symbols on your iPhone or iPad
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
What you see when you first glance at the iPhone or iPad keyboard are the regular letters, numbers, and symbols you're most likely to use in everyday communication. There's a whole lot more, however, lurking just beneath the surface, including accented (diacritic) characters, ligatures, extended punctuation, and special symbols. Accents include acute, grave, circumflex, caron/wedge, double acute, and double grave, dots and rings include umlaut and over ring, strokes include macrons, overlays include crossbars and slashes, curves include breve and tilde, and subscript curls include cedilla. Letters include eszett, Special symbols include degree, en dash, em dash, bullet…

If you are one of the over 2.2 million Windows Insiders then you are part of a massive feedback engine that is helping Microsoft determine how Windows 10 is being used and what shape some of its features will take. This information which is collected by automatic telemetry, interactive feedback while you are using Windows 10 and of course the Windows Feedback app where you can provide feedback in your own words, are providing Microsoft with mountains of data. The telemetry data is just part of being a Windows Insider participant and there is no way to shut that down. I guess you could call that the price of admission into the Insider Program. The other two method…

What would you change about Apple's Calendar app?
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Calendar was one of the original apps on the original iPhone. It started off simply but over the years it added Exchange support, landscape mode, a week view, a year view on iPad, the ability to touch and drag events around, and more. Apple renamed iCal on the Mac to Calendar to match the iPhone and iPad. And, after an era of heavy design, Calendar also got a clean, crisp makeover as part of the overall iOS redesign last year. That's what Calendar is, but we want to know what you'd like it to be? Natural language text entry Calendar extensions for third-party apps Unified Calendar/Reminders app Increased gesture support Integrate with online services Easier Ca…

Corning's 'Project Phire' takes on sapphire with super scratch-resistant, durable displays
by Guest Dan Thorp-Lancaster- 0 replies
Though Apple's famously-rumored quest for sapphire screens didn't really pan out as predicted, it could soon have something equally scratch-resistant from Corning. The company announced today that it is working on a new type of glass for screens that is almost as scratch-resistant as sapphire, while retaining the durability of its Gorilla Glass. The announcement came during an investor meeting today, and was reported originally by CNET: "We told you last year that sapphire was great for scratch performance but didn't fare well when dropped," Clappin, president of Corning Glass Technologies, told the crowd at the event. "So, we created a product that offers the …

Yosemite 10.10.3 beta bakes in support for Google's 2-step verification
by Guest Dan Thorp-Lancaster- 0 replies
t looks like managing your Google accounts on your Mac is about to get a tad easier. The OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 beta for developers appears to contain native support for Google's 2-step verification when adding Google accounts in system preferences. The new settings, which were spotted by MacRumors, enable users to activate a given Google account on their Mac by entering a one-time code sent via text message, or obtained from Google's Authenticator app. For comparison, the current version of OS X Yosemite requires users with 2-step verification enabled to create an app-specific password in order to add their Google accounts to a Mac. The OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 beta …

Photos for Mac first look: The future of ubiquitous photography approaches
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

At WWDC 2014, Apple showed off not just a new Photos for Mac app, but an entirely new approach to photo and video management. Combined with Photos for iOS 8 and iCloud Photo Library, it promised to store all your visual assets safely up on Apple's servers and make them available across all your devices — iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV — and via iCloud.com on the web. It also promised both speed, storing your most frequently accessed photos and videos locally and in full fidelity, and storage efficiency, leaving your less frequently accessed photos and videos on the cloud, a tap or click away. More importantly, Apple promised all of this as a part of something greater …

To start us off, we're thrilled to have the one, the only, the incomparable Jason Snell. After spending 17 years at the same company, last fall I set out on my own for the first time. I've spent years writing and speaking about the inevitability of change, and how we have to embrace it. But as human beings we're wired to prefer routines and dislike change — and I'm no different. These days I don't have a commute (other than to walk through a door). I'm not responsible for a staff of a few dozen peop…

How to change your Mac's Call Relay ringtone
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
One of OS X Yosemite's new Continuity features is the ability to accept (and make) phone calls when your iPhone is nearby. Call Relay is an incredibly useful feature, but when all of your devices ring with the same ringtone, it can get distracting. Here's how to give your Mac a distinct ringtone. When it's activated, Call Relay makes your Mac an extension of your iPhone. You can take and make calls using the FaceTime application on your Mac, saving you from having to dive for your phone every time it rings. By default, the Mac uses the "Opening" ringtone whenever you get an incoming call. But you can change that, just like you can change the ringtone on your phone…

iCloud Drive lets you store all your files up on Apple's servers and sync them across all your devices, including iPhone, iPad, and Mac. While you can let iCloud create files for you and drop files where it thinks they belong, you can also create your own folders and move any of your files into them. All you need is a Mac. How to manually create folders and move files to iCloud Drive in OS X Yosemite Launch the Finder. Click on iCloud Drive off in the left hand navigation. Create a folder just like you would in any other place on your Mac. Drag and drop files or create new ones just like you would anywhere else. You'll see iCloud start copying the files over to…

Last weekend a customer asked me for help installing software on his new Mac. When I told him he'd have to buy it, he responded, "You're techies. Can't you just do what my friends do and bootleg it?" I told him if he asked me that again I'd tell him to leave the store. I take software piracy very seriously. And so should you. Software piracy isn't a joke. It's a plague against the people in this industry who try very hard, under very difficult circumstances, to make a living by developing useful, fun software for people. It's easy to convince yourself that your desire to use software is more important than the developer's need to get paid for their efforts. …
