A salute to iOS gamers, or how to stop intimidating your non-gamer friends
by Guest Maddy Myers- 0 replies
Ed: Welcome to iMore's author spotlight column. Every Friday, we'll be bringing you the perspective and charm of the best and brightest minds in the Apple and tech community. This week: Games journalist and podcaster Maddy Myers. While walking home the other day with a well-read friend of mine who doesn't identify as a "gamer" — but has an Angry Birds history on his iPhone that would argue otherwise — I brought up BioShock: Infinite. I had assumed, given my friend's interest in activism and politics, that he'd be interested in hearing about the game's attempts at social critique, however ham-fisted. We never got that far. "What do you mean, it has a sad ending?" he …

by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies
AT&T's added another tier to their Mobile Share Value data plans: 7GB for $75. Of course, that's just for the data, but if you're thinking about grabbing a new smartphone at the same time and go with AT&T's Next payment plan option for a new smartphone, they'll cut the $40 smartphone access charge down to just $15/month. That equals out to $90/month in service charges for 7GB of data plus unlimited talk and text, plus whatever the payment rate is for the smartphone and Next payment plan you select might be (AT&T offers Next plans that spread the cost of the phone out over 18, 24, or 30 months). AT&T will even let you add up to three new smartphones at…

How to add someone to a group iMessage thread on iPhone and iPad
by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies
iMessage got some new tricks in iOS 8 and one of those is the ability to add new people to an existing iMessage group. That means instead of having to start a brand new conversation, you can just quickly add someone to the existing group chat in just a few taps! How to add a new person to a group iMessage thread Before trying to add someone, remember that this works only if all participants in the thread are using iMessage. If the thread shows green bubbles instead of blue, you won't be able to add additional participants. You also can't turn an individual message thread into a group thread. It must be an existing group thread with at least 2 members. And in ca…

Last Thursday Apple released the first developer beta for their all-new Photos for Mac app. A public beta will follow at some point, and the a public release this spring. In the meantime we've published a Photos for Mac FAQ and a Photos for Mac preview. It's still in beta, so everyone needs to adjust expectations accordingly, but it's also the future, and potentially one full of promise. So, one week later, we're following up with a few additional thoughts. Transitioning from iPhoto and Aperture Ally: I've actually never used Aperture so I did a migration from plain old iPhoto. I've always used iPhoto for organizing photos, and Lightroom or Photoshop for everyth…

According to the App Store guidelines document: The App Store has parental controls and requires all apps to bear age-appropriate content ratings. While violence, etc. has always been permitted in apps, Apple has always required that all app metadata — title, description, icon, and screenshots — be kid-proof with the lowest rating. by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

Romance in New York, by filmmaker Tristan Pope, takes the point of view of a boyfriend waking up to spend the day with the love of his life. What's more — he shot the entire 15-minute film on the iPhone 6. MoviePro, running on the iPhone 6, let Pope exercise fine-grain control over everything from exposure to color temperature to uncompressed audio to Bluetooth microphones. That meant he could get not only the video and sound he needed, but the video and sound he wanted. $4.99 - Mov…

How to enable two-step verification for your Apple ID
by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies
Most people use their Apple ID account not only for iCloud data, but to purchase content from iTunes and the App Store. That means that anyone who gets ahold of your account or manages to change your password could have access to your personal information and credit card information. If you want to increase the security of your Apple ID, you can use two-step verification to add a second layer of protection. That, it requires something you know (your password) and something you have (the security token sent to you) to access your account information and make changes. What does two-step verification protect? Currently two-step verification is required for the follow…

How to hide calendars in the Calendar app for iPhone and iPad
by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies

That's where hiding calendars comes in handy: You can tuck away calendars you don't need often and quickly toggle them back on when you do. Here's how! Hiding calendars is different from deleting calendars: You'll still receive any notifications you have set up, you just won't see that calendar unless you unhide it. It makes this trick a great solution for super-busy calendars that cast a shadow over ev…
