Bentley, the renowned automobile manufacturer, is the latest vendor to shoot a short film entirely on an iPhone. It's not cars that were filmed with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, however, but rather clothing. Specifically, in honor of the Savile Row and America: A Sartorial Special Relationship, which takes place this week at the British Ambassador's residence in Washington, D.C., Bentley Motors commissioned custom driving jackets from the four Savile Row houses. And then director Austin Reza took the iPhones, an app called FiLMic Pro, and a lot of talent, and made magic. The iPhone 6 has a great camera, and not just for stills. The video camera now has cinemati…

When Microsoft announced that Windows 10 would become a Windows as a Service model, rumors started surfacing that, even though the company promised to supply Windows 10 for free to eligible recipients, customers would have to start paying for it eventually. And, while the book isn't exactly closed on that, Gabe Aul was asked on Twitter recently about a potential for a yearly subscription fee for Windows. Here's what Gabe answered…"Windows as a service just means that we'll continuously keep it up to date. There is no ongoing fee." How is this different from past Windows versions? Not too much. And, if the recent announcement of the various versions releasing of Win…

Apple has weighed in on the impeding sale of RadioShack in an effort to protect customer data. Apple is intervening in the sale of RadioShack, filing a motion to prevent the sale of some customer data to bidders for RadioShack's assets. While the company doesn't object to the sale in general, they are hopping to block the sale of the personal data of customers who purchased Apple products from RadioShack stores. Apparently selling that data would violate Apple's reseller agreement with RadioShack, according to Law360: Apple Inc. told the Delaware bankruptcy court in a limited objection that including Apple customer data can't be included in RadioShack's attempt t…

Macs can easily read PC-formatted hard disk drives. Writing to them, however, is a different story. If you've switched to the Mac, welcome aboard. If you're using such a drive and you'd like to write new data to them, you'll find you can't unless you add new software. Fortunately, you don't have to spend a dime. Here's what data your iPhone can back up from your Apple Watch — and what it can't. There's been some confusion around what, exactly, your iPhone is saving from your Apple Watch — and how often it does so. Thankfully, Apple put out a helpful support document on Tuesday outlining this information, as well as how to restore your iPhone from a backup. How often does my iPhone back up my Apple Watch? According to Apple, it's an automatic process, so we imagine it's similar to services like iCloud Photo Library and the like — anytime your devices are within range, it will feed a steady stream of data between the two. In theory, the Watch should use a Bluetooth hands…

Lack of end-to-end-encryption means that conversations on Hangouts, if subject to a legal order, can be wiretapped or otherwise surveilled. Google hadn't disclosed this information until a recent Reddit AMA (ask me anything) and a Vice follow-up that resulted. It's not clear whether Google has been asked to provide access to Hangouts, but the potential is there. Vice: We asked Google to clarify, or elaborate, on Monday, and a spokesperson confirmed that Hangouts doesn't use end-to-end encryption. That makes it technically possible for Google to wiretap conversations at the request of law enforcement agents, even when you turn on the "off the record" feature, w…

Turning the clock back to 2010, the iPad was something of a risky move for Apple. At that time, netbooks had a strong market presence. Apple was pressured to respond but the company was loath to embrace the chintzy plastic, slow performance, low battery life and particularly the cramped keyboard of the netbook's heyday. Indeed, the iPad was to the netbook what the iPhone was to the BlackBerry -- a rejection of compromised input at the expense of software-defined touch display. Steve Jobs called out some of the tasks at which the iPad would excel -- e-mail, the Web, video, games and books. Of course, that was just the beginning. Tens of thousands of apps appeared tha…

Over the past decade Apple has completely changed the way we consume music. In the span of only 10 years we've gone from ripping CDs onto our iPods to downloading MP3s from iTunes to storing and streaming music from the cloud. With WWDC 2015 right around the corner, it's how Apple plans to tackle streaming music that has my undivided attention. When I was 16 I got my very first job working at an FYE in our local mall. It was the perfect first job. I loved music and enjoyed spending my time learning about different genres and discovering new artists. I still remember people lining up on Tuesdays to pick up the latest, hottest albums. In 2001 I got my first iPod.…

FileMaker celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. FileMaker has seen a lot of changes along the way, but it remains one of the Mac's most versatile and powerful database apps. FileMaker got its start back in the early 1980s as a program for PC-compatible computers running MS-DOS. The software changed hands a few times, including a brief ownership by Microsoft. The powerful database program remains one of the most enduring and successful Mac apps ever released, and it's stronger than ever with its version 14 release. Back in the 1980s, at the same time as FileMaker bounced from original developer Nashoba Systems to Microsoft and then back again, Apple created a …
