By default the collections and years views in the Photos app don't show all your photos — but you can change that. If you use the Photos app on your iPhone or iPad to sort, organize, and find your photos, there are lots of ways you can make that task easier. While one is simply using the search feature, another is by adjust exactly what the Photos tab shows under the Collections and Years views. By default you only see a summary of photos that iOS picks at random. If you'd rather see all your photos in these views, you just have to change a setting! How to view all photos in Collections and Years, not just summaries Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad…

Siri is a voice-controlled virtual personal assistant, and it's built right into your Apple Watch. On the iPhone, Siri is a secondary interface used when talking is more convenient than tapping. On the Apple Watch, Siri is a primary interface. It's not just the only way to enter text and a much more convenient way to initiate actions, but it's also the only way to search web services like Wikipedia, Wolfram Alpha, and Bing images. Talking to your watch might seem like sci-fi, but Siri makes it a reality. Set reminders There may not be a Reminders app on the Apple Watch, but you can still use Siri to set reminders for a time or for a place. "Hey Siri, remind…

Apple designed it so that a single Apple Watch would be paired with a single iPhone. That doesn't mean you can't use your Apple Watch with multiple iPhones if you really want to, like your home and work iPhone, or yours and your significant other's iPhone. The good news is: we can walk you through it! Other World Computing (OWC) has announced a new, speedy addition to its Accelsior line of SSD-mountable PCIe cards today. Called the Accelsior S, the new offering from OWC is a SSD mountable PCIe card that runs at 6Gb per second with bandwidth throughput of 550MB/s. In other words, it's pretty darn speedy. OWC is targeting the Accelsior S is compatible with Thunderbolt expansion hubs, but OWC is also targeting the drive at legacy Mac Pro owners who may be looking for a speed bump in their aging systems. As a bonus, no extra drivers are required to get started. All one has to do is mount an SSD drive to the Accelsior S and install the card. If the Accelsior …

Apple is said to be planning fewer user-facing feature additions for iOS 9 and OS 10.11, putting a bigger focus on quality and polish. Apple's major software releases for 2015, iOS 9 and OS X 10.11, will reportedly have fewer tentpole features for users than previous upgrades, with Apple focusing more on stability and security. Stability has previously been reported as a major focus or iOS 9, and the same now also said to be true for OS X 10.11, codenamed "Gala". From 9to5Mac: According to sources within Apple's software development departments, Apple engineers have been pushing executives for a Snow Leopard-style stability focus in 2015, following numerous …

Need to create a new user account on your Mac? It's easy. Just follow these steps. If a new family member or even a new office co-worker is going to use your Macintosh, you can create a new user account for them in OS X Yosemite. Having separate user accounts means each person who uses the Mac can each have their own settings, like iCloud account information, application preferences, and desktop wallpaper. They can each have their own repository of files and folders. It's the safest way to make sure you're not overwriting or otherwise disturbing each other's files. Here's how to do it. Breaking down what each account means First some notes about the different u…

Debating over which weather app you should use on your iPhone? What exactly is the best iPhone app for weather watchers? That's a tough question to answer. Apple has their own, built-in Weather app, with edge-to-edge graphics and subtle, elegant animations. However, it's still decidedly on the simple side. Since weather apps have become something of a playground for great designers and developers these days, there are many excellent, yet very different alternatives to be found in the App Store. The toughest part is choosing between them. If you need help deciding, these are currently our absolute favorites! Dark Sky Up to the minute precipitation info …

If Apple announces a new change-the-world technology and 11 months later nobody's using it, did the announcement actually happen? About a year ago, Apple unveiled HomeKit, its take on home automation, and announced that the framework would ship in the fall with iOS 8. Which it apparently did. And then... nothing happened. Truthfully, we heard hardly anything about HomeKit until this past January at CES, where a bunch of companies showed off HomeKit-enabled devices, coming "this spring" or "soon." It's been four months since, and spring is almost over. But the fever is, fortunately, about to break: HomeKit has pulled off its blankets and is about to rise from its …

Apple is reportedly seeking to secure deals to stream local programming with their rumored TV service. Apple reportedly wants to offer local programming to a wide range of customers through their rumored subscription TV service. Local TV would differentiate Apple's service from other such web-based offerings. With programming like the local news, customers have more of an incentive to keep using Apple's product, rather than trying to get their service from multiple sources, or sticking with their cable subscription. While local TV might make Apple's service appealing to more customers, and keep customer attention focused on the service, making the deals could preven…

Even though Photos for iOS doesn't offer a Faces album, you can still find tagged friends using the search field. I recently wrote a post on getting Faces to sync between multiple computers when you're using iCloud Photo Library, and mentioned — sadly — that there was no efficient way to sync the work-around to iOS. And this remains true... technically. It turns out that even though Apple doesn't officially sync the Faces album from Photos for OS X using iCloud Photo Library, you can still find any tagged photos of a person — no matter what computer you tagged them on — by searching their name. How to search your iPhone, iPad, or Mac for Faces and Places Open…

Can we please focus on Apple's actual strengths and weaknesses, instead of what the company might theoretically, possibly, one day do? The big news earlier this week was that Apple had reportedly punted its plans to make a television set. The report suggested that the company had worked on it for over a decade: Comments Steve Jobs made to biographer Walter Isaacson have helped stir that pot for years, but the bottom line is that it isn't happening. Between this and the mythical Apple car, we spend an almost idiotic amount of time speculating on what Apple might do, instead of what they're already doing that could be improved. "Innovation is saying no to 1000 thin…

The Space Black Apple Watch looks and feels like dragon scales, or the Batmobile, or something from Krypton. Technically Space Black is a diamond-like coating (DLC) on the stainless steel of the Apple Watch, but those are just words and they don't really do justice to how this model turned out. It's darker than it was back in September when Apple showed it off for the first time, and the new tone really does seem like something made of shadow and light. It took a while to ship — even the very first orders didn't arrive for several weeks. But holding it now, I can't help but think it was worth it. Here's what the Space Black casing looks like with the Space Black…

It's Global Awareness Accessibility Day — #GAAD — and that matters to everyone. Accessibility and inclusivity are often thought of as helping people with visual, auditory, or physical challenges, learning challenges, are on the Autistic spectrum, or otherwise need assistance beyond what technology normally supplies. The truth is, making products accessible and inclusive, the way Apple does, makes them easier to use and better for everyone. It lets people young and old, novice and expert, use an iPhone or iPad or Apple Watch, and use it well. For those with challenges, however, it's not just about access, it's about empowerment. It can improve their lives and let them t…
