Stanford sees thousands of signups for ResearchKit-powered study
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
Stanford University says that over 11,000 people have signed up for their cardiovascular study created using Apple's ResearchKit medical research platform. Released on earlier this week following Apple's "Spring Forward" event, MyHeart Counts allows users to participate in a study on cardiovascular health. Getting this many people to sign up for that kind of study would normally take much longer, according to Bloomberg: "To get 10,000 people enrolled in a medical study normally, it would take a year and 50 medical centers around the country," said Alan Yeung, medical director of Stanford Cardiovascular Health. "That's the power of the phone." While Res…

Forget Force Touch trackpads — I want a pressure-sensitive iPad Pro
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies

The new MacBook's trackpad is incredible. Now, imagine that technology in an iPad. I got to spend just twenty minutes with the new MacBook trackpad on Monday, but it was enough to leave me feeling wowed, impressed, and a little bit disoriented. Apple's long-in-the-making Force Touch trackpad uses haptic feedback to make your finger feel like it's depressing a button, even though the trackpad itself doesn't move. It's a sheet of glass. It doesn't have a button, it doesn't all depress at once — it does not move at all. But it feels like you're clicking. It feels like your finger is sinking into that immoveable glass and accessing deeper click levels than have ever exi…

Apple apologizes for continuing iTunes service outage, says DNS error to blame
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
Apple has issued an apology for the ongoing, wide-spread service outage affecting many of the company's online stores, including the iTunes Store and the iOS and Mac App Stores. The outage, which began just before 5 a.m. EDT, also hit iCloud account and sign in, as well as iCloud Mail, though service seems to have been restored to both of those. In a comment to iMore, an Apple spokesperson says that the company is working to fix the problem, which was caused by a DNS error. We apologize to our customers experiencing problems with iTunes and other services this morning. The cause was an internal DNS error at Apple. We're working to make all of the services avail…

There's never been a better time to get an Apple TV
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies

Now's a great time to pick up a new Apple TV, or two! At Apple's Spring Forward event this week the Apple TV saw its specs unchanged but its price slashed from $99 to $69. If you already have one, now's a great time to grab another. That's what I'm doing. Yep, it's another episode of "first world problems," cats and kittens. Versatility in a little black box My family and I have enjoyed Apple TVs ever since the first one came out. It looked like a Mac mini and ran hot enough to keep your coffee warm in the wintertime. We eventually went to the smaller second-gen black Apple TV, which we still use. We subscribe to Crunchyroll, so we can get our fix of asian a…

The latest Das Keyboard for the Macintosh: Is it the mechanical keyboard you've been waiting for? Computer keyboards can use electronic or mechanical switches under the keys. I'm a big fan of mechanical keyboards, because I can type faster and more accurately on them. Metadot makes some of the best Mac-specific mechanical keyboards out there, and today they've released the Das Keyboard 4 Professional for Mac. Here's my review. The good Available in two switch types, clicky and tactile Media buttons and oversized volume key work well with iTunes Lighter, thinner, more efficient than previous Das Keyboard model Built-in USB 3 hub Unique "Footbar" stand N key …

Meet four people helping to design the future of Microsoft
by Guest Emily Alhadeff- 0 replies

Behind the idea for any new piece of technology is a question: How do designers at the front end translate hunks of metal, plastic, wires, pixels and bits into a new human experience? Microsoft’s designers approach their products from their own unique angles: Kat Holmes (who is featured in the latest episode of the podcast “Next at Microsoft”) takes her fascination with messy, complicated love stories to Microsoft’s Cortana personal assistant and ends up hitting the streets to create a documentary about relationships, while Jonah Sterling designed the Microsoft Azure cloud computing experience and also acts as a curator of his team’s workspace and daily culture. Fitbit Surge fitness tracker review
by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies

The Fitbit Surge tracks steps, calories, sleep, workout sessions, and can even monitor your heart rate. Unfortunately, step count accuracy still appears to be Fitbit's Achilles Heel The Surge is Fitbit's high end fitness tracker for 2015 and features a touch sensitive screen, built-in heart rate sensor, and traditional watch style clasp. It's the most feature packed fitness band Fitbit has ever shipped. But is it enough to put Fitbit ahead of the rest? The good Touch screen is responsive and offers a lot of options without having to reach for your iPhone Workout sessions are easy to use and take only a few seconds to initiate Heart rate sensor is accurate and …

The accessible power of pinch-to-zoom
by Guest Steven Aquino- 0 replies

The onset of the iPhone in 2007 introduced the world to Multi-Touch, which Steve Jobs said "worked like magic". It forever changed the way people interacted with smartphones; not only was Multi-Touch an impressive technical achievement, but it was fun and delightful to use. More importantly, Multi-Touch changed people's expectations for their devices. We've gone from seeing hardware buttons everywhere to seeing simple slabs of glass. This is especially true for young children, who expect everything electronic to be tappable; touch is all they know, as they have no prior context of olden ways. The concept of touch is so ingrained in our collective muscle memory at th…

The community of fans: Real Madrid brings their supporters closer to the team
by Guest Orlando Ayala- 0 replies

In this digital age, the idea of community is changing rapidly. Online and social-based channels have created new ways of connecting with others who share similar beliefs, interests and passions. While some may be rightfully concerned that online social communications are not a substitute for human interaction, I continue to be fascinated with the ways people are finding to connect and share their passions. Last November, Microsoft announced a collaboration agreement with Real Madrid – ranked the “best club of the 20th century” – that accelerates the digital transformation of the club through technology. A new digital platform is at the center of this transformation, s…

More information has come to light on government surveillance, with new information revealing a campaign by the CIA to break through the security of Apple devices. Researchers working with the agency would apparently present their latest efforts at a yearly meeting called the "Jamboree". Tactics included creating a modified version of Xcode, the software used by developers to build apps for OS X and iOS, according to The Intercept: The security researchers also claimed they had created a modified version of Apple's proprietary software development tool, Xcode, which could sneak surveillance backdoors into any apps or programs created using the tool. Hands on with the Apple Watch and Apple Watch Edition
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies

Apple's tagline is a true one: The Apple Watch is coming, and soon. Here's what we think so far. At Apple's Spring Forward event, Rene and I got a chance to play with Apple's Watch collection in a bit more detail than either of us were allowed last Fall. Though we're going to reserve any sort of sweeping judgements about the Watch until we actually get some in-depth hands on time with them in April, here are our latest impressions of Apple's upcoming smartwatch. Gold is good Ren: Last fall, I only got a chance to try on Apple's baseline Watch Sport. This time around, I got to wear both the 38mm and 42mm Watch and Watch Edition… and boy, I wish I was in the ki…

Hands on with Apple's unbelievably-thin, battery-packed MacBook
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies

The Mac is back and thinner than ever. We got some hands-on time with Apple's new battery-packed, taptically-enhanced, Retina-quality laptop after Monday's Spring Forward event, and boy, is it pretty. Here's what Rene and I thought about Apple's newest Mac — where it's going, what it's doing for the laptop space, and the accuracy of that Force Touch trackpad. So, about that trackpad... Ren: Let's get this out of the way first: I was incredibly skeptical over the MacBook's Force Touch trackpad. There are no vertical mechanics at play here — no BlackBerry Bold-esque glass depression, just touch-based brain trickery. As I said to Rene during the event, these…

Apple Watch confirmed to include 8GB of internal storage, but only 2GB will be available
by Guest Rich Edmonds- 0 replies
All Apple Watch models have been confirmed to have 8GB of internal storage, but only 2GB will be available. That said, it's a watch and tells the time! The 2GB limitation (2GB for music and just 75MB for photos) is actually generous for a smartwatch. Most consumers store countless GBs worth of music on their iPhones and the new smart wearable is a perfect companion device to control said collections. This would help negate the need to waste iPhone battery through wakening the screen and unlocking the display to access playback controls. All three smartwatches from Apple, the Sport, Watch and Edition, will feature the same capacity. This extra storage enables i…

Apple will offer battery replacements for the Apple Watch
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

Apple has confirmed that they will offer battery replacements for the Apple Watch. Apple offers battery replacements for many of their products, including laptops, iPhones and iPads, so it isn't surprising that Apple would offer battery replacements for Apple Watch. Still, it's good to have that assurance. What isn't known, however, is how much a battery replacement will cost. From Techcrunch: Well, when it comes to the battery at least, owners of Apple Watch will be able to extend its lifespan. An Apple spokesman confirmed to TechCrunch the "battery is replaceable". Albeit, it's not clear how much it will cost to send in your wearable to Apple to get it returned…

LaCie introduces Porsche Design Mobile Drive with USB-C for new MacBook owners
by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies

Owners of Apple's upcoming versions of the MacBook, with its USB-C port, will be able to expand its storage space with the newly announced Porsche Design Mobile Drive from LaCie. USB-C ports offer a way for compatible devices to quickly connect thanks to the fact that it doesn't matter which end of the cable is used. This should make it easy to use the Porsche Design Mobile Drive on the MacBook when it is launched on April 10. LaCie says: The LaCie Mobile Drive was designed especially for Mac users. It features the same stylish, sophisticated aluminum finish as the latest MacBook. Plus, it is Time Machine compatible, so Mac users can use the LaCie Mobile…
