  4. How To: Using the Get Windows 10 reservation system Just before Microsoft officially announced that Windows 10 will launch on July 29th, Windows 7 and 8.1 users began to notice a new icon in their Notification Area. This Get Windows 10 notification is the tool for reserving your free upgrade for the new operating system and according to the Windows 10 FAQ page there is an advantage to clicking the icon and reserving your copy today if you intend to upgrade. If you reserve your copy through this system in the notification tray, Microsoft will preload your device with the upgrade before July 29th so when the day comes you won’t have to waste any time downloading i…

  5. After a busy few days we are catching our breath around here and continuing to learn more about the entire Windows 10 availability date on 29 July 2015. We know that Windows 7 and 8.1 users started to see the Get Windows 10 App icon show up in their system trays over the weekend (See our gallery). It is through this app that users can reserve their copy of Windows 10 when it is available as a free upgrade to those Windows 7 and 8.1 systems. This reservation is not necessary nor is Microsoft going to run out of Windows 10 upgrades either. One benefit of the pre-order, which we suspected was the case yesterday and is now confirmed by the reservation emails Microso…

For owners of mid-2014 or earlier Macs, a new attack against a vulnerability in the UEFI boot script table is worth knowing about but won't affect most customers. UEFI - Unified Extensible Firmware Interface — is what the Mac uses to boot from firmware and into the OS X operating system. If you're familiar with BIOS, then this replaced that. At the Chaos Communication Congress (CCC) in 2014, a presentation showed how a vulnerability in the boot script table could be used to rewrite the firmware when a Mac wakes after being in sleep mode. As usual, it's something to be informed about, but for the vast majority of people, nothing to panic about. According to Reverse Engi…

The Link Bracelet for the 38mm and 42mm Apple Watch is made from 316L stainless steel alloy and can be easily re-sized, no jeweler or tools required. The Space Black Apple Watch I ordered came with the Link Bracelet. From the moment I saw it, I knew I had to have it. Link Bracelets have always been the band I think of when I think of watches. Real watches. Leather is elegant and sophisticated, but metal is mechanical and just plain cool. I should note that the Space Black Link Bracelet is not currently available to purchase separately. If you want to buy a link bracelet, you'll have to buy it in stainless steel. I'm showing the Space Black version here because that's t…

  17. Microsoft is giving the bulk of its Windows users a free upgrade to Windows 10 so long as they update within the first year. But for people who aren't eligible for that promotion, the company is maintaining status quo on single license pricing. If you've got an outdated version of Windows (anything older than 7) or build your own PCs, Microsoft's latest release will cost $119. That's for Windows 10 Home, and the Pro tier will be priced higher at $199. Windows 10 Home is the right choice for almost everyone, but if you need a feature that's only available in Pro, you can step up later by purchasing a $99 Windows 10 Pro Pack. These prices are largely identical to tho…

  18. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ngnzY5xtI8 Microsoft promised to launch Windows 10 in the summer, and now the company is revealing an exact date: July 29th. The official date comes weeks after AMD CEO Lisa Su revealed that Microsoft would launch Windows 10 in late July. Microsoft’s aggressive timing means that the company will be looking to finalize its features for Windows 10 very soon. Recent preview builds of the operating system continue to include many changes to features, and a number of issues and bugs. Microsoft now has less than two months to fix all these issues and bugs before it launches Windows 10 to the world. That’s slightly concerning given the…

  19. Last week ended with the release of Windows 10 build 10130 to Insiders – the second test build released to those on the Fast Ring in a nine-day period. This week kicks off with the official announcement from Microsoft that Windows 10 will be available for Windows 7 and 8.1 users to download for free on 29 July 2015. With that confirmation from Microsoft there is now a lot more info available relating to this upgrade and I thought it would be handy to highlight a few of those items in one place. The free upgrade period for Windows 10 will expire on 29 July 2016 – one year after the offer begins as Microsoft has previously stated. The Get Windows App, which was a…

Are you looking for a pint-sized speaker with gallons of sound? Time to get your Soundfreaq on. Portable Bluetooth speakers are a dime-a-dozen these days, which makes differentiating them even more difficult. At a reader's behest, I recently checked out Soundfreaq's offerings; their Pocket Kick is an impressive speaker that's truly small enough to fit in your pocket. The Pocket Kick measures a bit less than 6 inches wide, 2.5 inches tall and 1.2 inches deep. Inside the case are two 2.5 watt (5 watts total) drivers mated to a rear-facing passive radiator, which provide a surprising amount of midrange oomph for such a tiny speaker. Following last year's partnership, IBM employees are now able to choose Mac computers instead of being stuck with a Windows machine. Back in July of 2014, IBM and Apple inked up a partnership that was designed to bring out the best in both companies, and enhance the enterprise experience. Since then we have seen the two companies release a number of new mobile apps, and now IBM has given its employees a new option for their computers. IBM employees are now able to use Mac computers if they choose, instead of just having the Windows and Linux options. Employees were made aware of the changes through an internal memo according to 9to5Mac: In a memo to employees, IB…

Apple says music is in the company's DNA, but what needs to be in its music offering? The original iPhone shipped with an iPod app that played the music you synced over via USB from iTunes on the desktop. A half a year later it was joined by the iTunes Store app, and you could buy music directly. Eventually, you could even buy over cellular. Then came iCloud and re-downloads, the short-lived Ping social music network, iTunes Match as a music locker, and iTunes Radio as music stations. Then Apple bought beats, and as a result we didn't hear much about music for a while. Now rumor has it Apple has a new music service on the way for iOS 9, to be previewed perhaps as early…

Want to better separate the apps within your Dock? Try adding a space to break them up. OS X Yosemite's Dock gives you a handy way of launching applications that you use the most frequently with a single click. To organize them, you can click and drag them around however you like. What you can't do, at least not directly from within the Dock's preferences, is divide up the apps using an easy visual separator. Fortunately, there's a workaround — if you're comfortable using the Terminal command line. I've set up spaces to separate the apps I use: My Internet apps are all grouped together, as are my writing tools and creative apps, all with spaces in-between them. Th…
