by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies

When it comes down to it, the Charge HR is currently the best wrist worn fitness tracker in Fitbit's current lineup. The Charge HR by Fitbit counts your steps, tracks calories, monitors your heart rate, and pairs right with the Fitbit app to give you an overview of your activity each day. It also features a small display that shows you current stats and call and text notifications without having to pick up your phone. It might not boast all the features its older sibling the Fitbit Surge does, but it's still a better option for most people. Here's why... The good Great battery life, especially if you don't have notifications and all-day sync enabled Double tap …

Here's what the Apple Watch can do without an iPhone
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies

Even without an iPhone, you can still do a lot with your Apple Watch. The Apple Watch and the iPhone may be two devices that go better together, but Apple's wearable is still powerful in its own right. If you leave your iPhone at home, here's what the Watch can do on its own. It can tell the time Unsurprisingly, timekeeping will continue to work as advertised, and you'll be able to set alarms and timers, see your calendar details, and more. The only thing you're missing without an iPhone is an occasional ping to make sure the time as kept on the Watch is identical to the time as dictated by the global standard, but unless you're planning on being away from y…

Another interesting session out of the WinHec Summit in Shenzhen, China has revealed the path for current Windows users to upgrade to Windows 10 when it is released sometime this summer. The session, presented by Ming-che Julius Ho a program manager at Microsoft, contains some very bad news for those of us still using our Surface or Surface 2 devices that are based on Windows RT. Of course, those still out there on Windows Vista are not listed so they will need to perform a clean install after purchasing a copy of Windows 10 as they are not listed as an eligible version of Windows for the free upgrade to Windows 10. In reality Vista is a very small portion of the en…

Hey Apple, Macs need less crappy webcams
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies

Apple needs to step up its game with the built-in FaceTime cameras in Macs. They suck. Apple laptops are popular with podcasters and video conferencers. Why do so many of us buy external cameras? Because the FaceTime camera built into the Mac is mediocre at best. I love my 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro. It's the best laptop I've ever used, except for one glaring problem: I find the FaceTime camera built into it to be completely inadequate. Within a few days of receiving it I'd also gotten a Logitech C920, an external webcam with full 1080p resolution. Its manufacturer doesn't even officially support the Mac, but that doesn't stop the C920 from running rings around wh…

Ever need to figure out what time it is in some other corner of the world? Just ask Siri! Time zones can be confusing. While the Clock app for iPhone and iPad lets you add all the locations you want to monitor current times, it's way easier to just ask Siri. As long as you know the location, Siri can tell you the current time and how far ahead or behind they are from your current location. How to check times in other parts of the world with Siri Press and hold your Home button to activate Siri. Say something like "What time is it in Berlin, Germany?" — just substitute the location you want to know about. Siri will quickly tell you what the local time and how m…

by Guest Jared DiPane- 0 replies

Tinkerplay, a new free app from Autodesk, hopes to make 3D printing and designing a little more fun. 3D printing is becoming more and more popular, and Russell Holly from Android Central has been having quite a good time with it, but designing and printing isn't for everyone. The folks at Autodesk have just released a new app for Android, iOS and even Windows Phone that they hope will make the experience much easier. Based on the popular Modio app, which Autodesk had previously acquired, Tinkerplay will allow users to design and customize characters with the ability to 3D print them afterwards. The various 3D printed parts from within the app can be snapped together…

Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users this summer, but Microsoft is also extending its offer to software pirates. "We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10," says Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s Windows chief, in an interview with Reuters. The move means that thousands, perhaps millions, of machines will get a free copy of Windows 10 even if a license has not been properly acquired. While the Reuters report is focused on China, it's not immediately clear if this extends to other regions, but Myerson's "all qualified PCs" appears to suggest so. The Verge has reached out to Microsoft to clarify. Software pirat…

Here's why you should turn on two-factor authentication
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies

These days, simple passwords aren't good enough to secure your data. Hackers are too good, and security systems flawed. Longer complicated passwords created by generators like 1Password and Safari's iCloud Keychain can help, but the best way to lock down your accounts is to add extra authentication options. What is two-factor authentication? Two-factor authentication is the most prevalent way to secure your accounts: It asks you to authenticate that you are who you say you are by supplying not only your password, but a unique code supplied from your phone or an external app. It ensures that those accessing your accounts have access to your physical devices as well…

by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies

Don't lose your Google info or Gmail archives to a password hack. Set up two-step authentication to protect your most important assets. When it comes to data you want secured, your email accounts are probably close to the top of the list. Though email is technically an unencrypted medium, the average hacker might not go to too much trouble to grab a single message — but they'd love a peek at your history full of password resets, not to mention getting potential access to your bank accounts or other private information. Strong passwords can help, but to be as secure as possible, you want to enable two-step authentication. What is two-step authentication? Two-…
