Vine now supports higher-resolution 720p video uploads from the iPhone. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus review: Six months later
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
It's been six months since we published our original iPhone 6 review and iPhone 6 Plus review, and ninety days since we revisited it in our three months later review. We've now lived with Apple's big and bigger new iPhones for a half a year. We've taken a ton of pictures. We've pushed the Apple A8 processor and we've charged and discharged the battery over and over again. We've kept them in our pockets and we've dropped them on our floors. We've roamed with them. We've talked to and with them. And we've stared at their screens. A lot. As such, we've had time to evolve our initial thoughts and feelings. And that means it's time to take one more look at the iPhone 6 and …

How do I get rid of "xfinitywifi?"
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies

Comcast may be using your home router to broadcast a public wi-fi hotspot. Find out what that means, and how to get rid of it. There are a lot of Comcast cable modems leased by residential and business customers. Millions, in fact. In 2014 Comcast created a public network on many of them called "xfinitywifi." If you're a Comcast customers, you can use this public hotspot to sign in — using your own comcast.net e-mail address — to access the Internet. The network has confused and worried some of our readers, however. If you're one of them, here's what you need to know. Millions of Comcast's residential cable modems were reprovisioned last year to broadcast the "xfini…

Apple has posted more information on the special stores-within-stores in Tokyo, London, and Paris that will also host Apple Watch try-ons come April 10. This follows up the press release from last month that announced the Apple Watch would appear at Selfridges in London, Galeries Lafayette in Paris and Isetan in Tokyo on April 10, the same day try-ons go live at Apple Retail Stores. All Apple Watch collections should be available at the locations, along with specifically trained staff to assist customers in getting just exactly the watch they want. This week served up a mix of exciting, noteworthy news and stories about Microsoft, so let’s dig in for inspiration. When lightning destroyed the computer servers of a rural tribal group in Michigan, it became the spark for a big tech overhaul. But it wasn’t easy. The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi had such ancient infrastructure that people preferred paper and phone calls to computers, said Matt Clay, the tribal band’s information technology director. But three years later, the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi uses Microsoft tools for an efficient, modern government system, a success story showcased Thursday. Two states away, Microsoft announced a new initiative in Chicago…

Apple Watch apps start hitting the App Store
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

Apple has begun allowing Apple Watch apps into the App Store ahead of April 10 pre-orders. While developers can't upload Apple Watch-enabled apps on their own yet, some of the apps shown off in Apple's demos and on the company's web site have clearly been given the green light. That Apple Watch functionality is mentioned in the description indicates it's unabashed as well — what better way to keep interest high then to show the app wheels in motion? Additionally, if Apple is seeding Apple Watch review units in advance of April 10, having apps available will lead to better informed reviews. As teases go, it's a good one. So, which apps have been updated with Apple Wa…

You don't get to play the gender card to promote piss-poor writing
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies

When you use "People are only attacking me because I'm a woman" as a marketing tool, you hurt every other female professional out there on the Internet. A tweet today got me irrationally, stupidly, Peter Cohen-levels of angry. Namely, this tweet by Quartz writer Emma-Kate Symons. Cult of Mac attacks! Male Apple worshippers on warpath after my point of view piece mocking their Messiah for @qz http://t.co/wITexTAwff — Emma-Kate Symons (@eksymons) March 25, 2015 Now, I've seen and personally experienced the wrath that comes from angry jerks with Opinions on the Internet, so I can't necessarily prove that Symons wasn't getting gendered attacks the likes of "Sto…

If you want an iPhone but don't like Apple, here's your alternative...
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

Samsung has been at its most successful when filling voids in Apple's iPhone lineup: It offered Verizon support up until 2011, large screens up until 2014. What voids are left to fill now? The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge have to answer that question, starting with today's pre-order and carrying over to April 10's release date and beyond. It's an answer I'm truly interested in seeing, because right now I have no idea to whom I could recommend either of those phones. This is where I pause and give a trigger warning to all my Android friends. Part of my covering the iPhone is covering competition to the iPhone: How other companies choose to counter-pro…

There's no word as to when we can expect to see Skype for Web released to the masses, but for now it's looking as though Microsoft will provide a solution to those who do…

iPhone or iPad freezing when you delete apps? Here's the work-around!
by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies

You touch and hold an icon to put your iPhone or iPad into jiggly mode, tap the X button to delete an app, and then... nothing. Literally nothing. Everything just freezes up and seems to hang for a while. Eventually the confirm delete dialog box pops up, but it takes way longer than it should. Instead of letting you quickly delete an app and get on with using your device, it just feels like everything is locked up and you're stuck. If you're experiencing this problem on iOS 8 here's the good news — there is a workaround, and we're tacking it on this week's iOS Help. iOS Help Every Thursday our Ally Kazmucha brings you iOS Help — a column where you can get y…

by Guest Dan Thorp-Lancaster- 0 replies

Apple's rumored music streaming plans may include a revamped iTunes Radio, as well as exclusive album launch deals for the upcoming service. While a new report from The New York TImes largely focuses on a number of previously rumored details about Apple's streaming music plans, it does point to some new details in the form of a revamped iTunes Radio headed up by former BBC Radio DJ and recent Apple hire, Zane Lowe. From The New York Times: Mr. Lowe is expected to play a role reconfiguring iTunes Radio. Among the ideas that have been floated for iTunes Radio are a more geographically targeted approach that would bear some resemblance to a traditional radio station…

The Fitbit mobile app now lets you sync multiple trackers to your account
by Guest Daniel Rubino- 0 replies
File this one under first-world problems but if you are like us and own multiple Fitbit trackers (collect them all!) you no longer have to decide which to wear. In a backend update, Fitbit has thrown the switch to let users synchronize multiple Fitbit Trackers to their account through the mobile app. Previously, if you owned the more rugged and full-featured Surge and the leaner Charge HR, you would have to pair only one to your account. The other device would essentially be kicked out from tracking until you repaired it. Like the Highlander, there could only be one. Needless to say, it is rather cumbersome to switch trackers on the fly with this method. Star…

No Apple Watch mixing-and-matching come April 10 — collections are it
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
The Apple Online Store previews all of the Apple Watch case and band combinations, grouped into collections. Despite that, some have hoped, come pre-order time, they'd still be able to to mix-and-match cases and bands to get any combination they liked, without having to buy any additional bands. Sadly not. As of right now, you will only be able to order one of the Apple Watches in the case and band pairs as presented in the collections, and that doesn't seem likely to change. So, if you want a sliver aluminum case and a black band, you'll have to buy the black band separately and swap it in afterwards. Likewise if you want a space gray aluminum case and a colored ba…
