Here's why you should turn on two-factor authentication
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies
These days, simple passwords aren't good enough to secure your data. Hackers are too good, and security systems flawed. Longer complicated passwords created by generators like 1Password and Safari's iCloud Keychain can help, but the best way to lock down your accounts is to add extra authentication options. What is two-factor authentication? Two-factor authentication is the most prevalent way to secure your accounts: It asks you to authenticate that you are who you say you are by supplying not only your password, but a unique code supplied from your phone or an external app. It ensures that those accessing your accounts have access to your physical devices as well…

By Matt Barlow, General Manager of New Devices When we launched Microsoft Health and Microsoft Band, it was our first entry into wearable technology and just the beginning of a multi-year vision for the category from which we continue to build and grow. We were beyond excited about what we had to share – but we measured that excitement with a phased approach by launching exclusively in the United States at Microsoft stores. Today, we’re thrilled to build on what we’ve done, and share more about where we’re heading, by announcing three things. First, in the coming weeks, you’ll see a ramping up of Microsoft store inventory across the United States. Microsoft stores h…

How to set up two-step authentication for Google and Gmail on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies
Don't lose your Google info or Gmail archives to a password hack. Set up two-step authentication to protect your most important assets. When it comes to data you want secured, your email accounts are probably close to the top of the list. Though email is technically an unencrypted medium, the average hacker might not go to too much trouble to grab a single message — but they'd love a peek at your history full of password resets, not to mention getting potential access to your bank accounts or other private information. Strong passwords can help, but to be as secure as possible, you want to enable two-step authentication. What is two-step authentication? Two-…

by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
Apple is reportedly preparing a trade-in offer to encourage people to switch to an iPhone. The new offer is said to be an extension of their current trade-in and recycling program. Apple's current trade-in and recycling program lets customers trade in their old Apple devices in exchange for an Apple gift card. The program would be expanded to allow customers with phones running Android and other competing systems to exchange those devices as well, according to 9to5Mac: According to sources, Apple will soon introduce a new recycling and trade-in program that will accept non-Apple smartphones, notably including Android devices, in exchange for gift cards to be us…

by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies

If you don't like this behavior and would like to see all events — declined or not — in all calendar views on your iPhone or iPad, all you've got to do is change a setting. Here's how! When you choose to show declined events in the Calendar app, you won't actually receive notifications for them. Apple's Eddy Cue, is not a fan of the recent documentary, "Steve Jobs: The Man In the Machine." Cue said the film didn't reflect the Jobs that he knew. The documentary, which was recently purchased by CNN and Magnolia Pictures, claims to be an honest and critical look at the late Apple co-founder. But Cue, Apple's SVP of Internet Software and Services, said that documentary came across as mean-spirited. From Cue on Twitter: Very disappointed in SJ:Man in the Machine. An inaccurate and mean-spirited view of my friend. It's not a reflection of the Steve I knew. — Eddy Cue (@cue) March 16, 2015 Cue says that the upcoming book Becoming Steve Jobs is the th…

Why did you dump your Samsung Galaxy for an iPhone 6?
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
A lot of our readers who switched from Android to iPhone came from the super-popular Samsung Galaxy S line of phones. Were you one of them? When I first asked why people dumped their Android phones for iPhones, I figured most people who replied would come from having a Samsung Galaxy S. Samsung just always seemed like the iPhone placeholder. In other words, the phone you get when the iPhone isn't yet on your carrier or doesn't yet come in the display size you want. Now the iPhone is on almost every carrier, however, and has bigger and better screens. Turns out the reasons were broader and more varied than I imagined. So, why did our readers switch to iPhone? Over …

Facebook revamps community guidelines, shows what the social network will take down
by Guest Rich Edmonds- 0 replies

Facebook has revamped the social network's community standards and guidelines to show what registered accounts can (and more importantly, cannot) share on the service. Changes made to the guidelines also clarify the company's position on bullying, threats of violence and even hate speech. In a new blog post, Facebook's Monika Bickert, Head of Global Policy Management, and Chris Sonderby, Deputy General Counsel, go into some detail about prohibiting harassment, threatening violence, and any hate speech against someone because of their race or religious beliefs. The new standards are fairly light to read through too. For example, according to the new guideline…

Yahoo has announced its take on password security with a service that removes the password altogether. With its on-demand service, the software giant will deliver a one-time key every time a user needs to log in to their account, with a "send my password" button displayed instead of the password text box. No on-device screenshot needed for Apple Watch app submissions
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Looks like Apple corrected some confusing language on the submission-side of Apple Watch apps. When iOS 8.2 first went live, Apple's developer upload portal, iTunes Connect, referenced a requirement for an on-device screenshot rather than simulator-only screenshots. That would mean you had to have Apple Watch hardware in-hand to get that specific screenshot and be able to upload to the App Watch App Store. As of Friday, however, it seems like the language has been corrected to reflect that simulator-only screenshots are fine for submission. (That said, with something as new and different as the Apple Watch, while some genius developers may be able to nail it flying …

Why I'm optimistic about gender equality in tech
by Guest Jean MacDonald- 0 replies

"But most women aren't really interested in programming." When someone says that, I can relate. That's exactly how I felt about girls playing sports when I was 15. Title IX, the landmark 1972 U.S. civil rights law that mandated equal funding for both genders in educational programs — including athletics — was a hot topic during my high school years. At the time, the major sports for girls at my school were track, gymnastics, swimming, and tennis. I remember thinking, "How will they spend the same amount of money on girls' sports as they do on boys' sports? Girls don't even want to play basketball or soccer." It didn't even occur to me that the demand might be there …

What would you change about Notification Center?
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Notification Center is a way to collect all your widgets and alerts all in one place. Since its debut in iOS 5, Apple has included first-party widgets, removed them, then added support for third-party widgets. Apple has added a missed tab and then taken it away. Apple has added predictive widgets — Notification Center can now tell you how long it will take to get to your next likely destination — but they haven't expanded on the concept. Apple also added Control Center to iOS 7. Instead of bundling toggles sliders, buttons, and shortcuts into the top-down Notification Center, they created a new, separate bottom-up drawer instead. iOS 8 did a lot of clean up, and add…

An "Activity" app appears on your iPhone when you pair an Apple Watch
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies

When you pair an Apple Watch with an iPhone running iOS 8.2, it looks like a new "Activity" app miraculously appears. We've seen a lot about the Apple Watch so far, there are still a few surprises in store. Take the Apple Watch app that appeared after updating to iOS 8.2 — it's not the only new app there. There's also an "Activity" app designed to work with an Apple Watch, but it doesn't appear until after you've paired a watch. The app was uncovered by iOS developer Hamza Sood on Twitter: So the Fitness app does exist on 8.2, it's just hidden until you connect an Apple Watch pic.twitter.com/R1BgnKYRHe — Hamza Sood (@hamzasood) March 12, 2015 Here'…

Star Blazers and the transformative power of anime
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies

Every so often something comes along that changes your life and stays with you forever. For Charlie Jane Anders and me, it was Star Blazers. Charlie Jane Anders' love letter to Star Blazers is one of my favorite pieces on the Internet this week. I encourage everyone to read it. I'm in my mid-forties, and I'm squarely in the first Star Wars generation. I was seven when that movie came out, and my friends and I all collected the action figures and played Star Wars in our back yards, pretending we had light sabers. But there was a sci-fi TV series that meant more to me even than Star Wars, and it was Star Blazers. Anders explains the psychology behind the show — s…

Live video streaming app Meerkat gets kneecapped by Twitter
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies

Meerkat, a new live video streaming app, has been hobbled by the ever-frustrating Twitter. It launched just 2 weeks ago and has risen in prominence thanks to exposure at SXSW. Meerkat works simply: log in with your Twitter account, hit the stream button, and it immediately starts broadcasting video from your iPhone onto the web and posts a link onto Twitter. The stream is only available while it's live — once you stop, it's gone. Ephemeral live video, if you will. It's a straightforward service, and while it's not yet widely used, the exposure it's seen at SXSW Interactive has dramatically raised its profile. While you might question the value of live video streami…
