Author of 'Becoming Steve Jobs' talks about his time with the Apple co-founder
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
Brent Schlender, co-author of the upcoming Becoming Steve Jobs, opens up about his relationship with Jobs in the new book. Jobs and Schlender first met in 1986 as Jobs was trying to get publicity for NeXT. Schlender, who at the time was working for The Wall Street Journal, refused to do a story on Jobs and the company. But that didn't sour Jobs' opinion on him, and it marked the beginning of what would be a 25-year relationship between subject and reporter, according to Fortune: "Not writing a feature was the first salvo in the twenty-five-year-long negotiation that marked our relationship," writes Schlender in the prologue that kickstarts the book. "There was …

We may have gotten our first look at the Demo Kits that will be used to allow customers to try on in-ear headphones in Apple Retail Stores. Apple's intention to let customers try on in-ear headsets in their stores was reported earlier this month. The Demo Kit were reported to consist of six pairs of headphones: The urBeats, Beats Tour, and PowerBeats 2 Wireless, all made by the Apple-owned Beats Electronics, and the RHA MA450i, JayBird BlueBuds X, and the Bose QC20. An image of the kit has reportedly surfaced, thanks to Japanese blog Macotakara. Customers who make use of the Demo Kit are said to be able to keep the tips that are used when trying on headphones…

New Apple TV will reportedly debut in June with an App Store and Siri
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
Apple once again rumored to revamp Apple TV, this time for WWDC in June. The specs are pretty much the same as previous reports — a modern chipset, an App Store, HomeKit, and Siri. Which makes sense given the last update was March, 2012 and Apple has updated a lot of their core technologies since then. John Paczkowski, writing for BuzzFeed: As for the new Apple TV box itself, expect an updated design and new innards: the company's latest A8 system-on-chip — or a variant of it: a dramatic increase in on-board storage to accommodate app downloads — well beyond the 8GB in the current device; and an improved operating system that will support Siri voice control Apple…

Forget Apple fanboys, what about Apple doomsayers?
by Guest John Moltz- 0 replies

Apple zealots are one thing, but Apple doomsayers might be worse. This week, on The Network: John Moltz wonders why we ever mixed church and tech. Stop me if you've heard this one: Apple is just like a relig— STOP. Yeah, you've heard it. Apple is just like a religion. And its customers are acolytes, steeped in the heady lore of the Church of Jobs blah blah blah. For certain pundits and commentators, this explains away everything they don't understand about Apple. Why it does so fabulously well, why its customers are so loyal, why the company is able to charge more for its devices... it explains everything! A little too neatly. See, if I could add an addendu…

by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

Apple has been using a specialized fitness lab to collect data for the Apple Watch, making sure that it can gather the most accurate readings possible. The lab, which has now been shown to the public for the first time, includes exercise equipment, specialized rooms, and diagnostic equipment to measure exactly how the human body responds to certain conditions while working in particular ways. All of this data has helped Apple develop and fine-tune the fitness features of the Apple Watch, according to ABC News: Apple engineers, managers and developers have been secretly volunteering for the past year in this state-of-the-art lab to participate in rowing, running…

What we want to see from the next Apple TV
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies

Apple just dropped the price of the Apple TV to $69 and announced an exclusive deal to bring HBO Now to customers just in time for Game of Thrones. But Apple also said that this was just the beginning. We've talked a little about the possible future of Apple TV, but it's a broad topic and that means we need to make the discussion big — iMore roundtable big! How do you use your current Apple TV? Peter: I use it mainly to watch content I can't view on cable, like YouTube videos and Crunchyroll anime. Our family also all uses the Netflix app. The Apple TV is a vital link in my house-wide home audio network, too. I AirPlay music to it from my computer and iOS device…

Siri and the potential for 'Voice ID'
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Yell "Hey, Siri!" on podcast — or out loud at an event — and you'll get dozens of complaints from people whose phones suddenly went into voice mode. That might sound like an edge-case for Siri, Apple's personal digital assistant, but here's something more common — a family charging station with several iPhones devices plugged in. How do you target yours and yours alone? How do you make sure only your voice can activate Siri on your iPhone or iPad? On your Apple Watch? In your car or around your house? To prevent false activations, the Apple Watch needs you to bring your wrist up and towards you before "Hey, Siri!" will work. The iPhone and iPad not so much. One way …

Apple reportedly looking to sweep antivirus apps from the iOS App Store
by Guest Dan Thorp-Lancaster- 0 replies
It looks as though Apple may be in the process of removing anti-virus apps from the iOS App Store. A number of virus scanners have been removed from the app store recently. One of the apps affected was VirusBarrier, whose developer, Intego, wrote in a blog post that the removal is part of a larger effort by Apple to eliminate anti-virus and anti-malware products from the App Store. From Intego: Apple has elected to eliminate the category of anti-virus and anti-malware products from their iOS App Store. As a result of this decision, our product VirusBarrier iOS is no longer available for sale. The reasoning behind the removal of anti-virus apps from the App S…

The 'inside story' of Apple's ResearchKit
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
ResearchKit seemed to come out of nowhere, but it only seemed that way... Medical research needed a way to reach more people more effectively. Tear-tag flyers on bulletin boards just weren't cutting it. The future was clearly in mobile devices — the personal technology more and more people had with them every day — and in the cloud — the servers that could bring it all together — but how could that future be brought into the present? Fusion: Sitting in the audience [of Dr. Stephen Friend's Standford MedX talk on September 27, 2013] was Mike O'Reilly, a newly minted vice president for medical technologies at Apple. A few months earlier, Apple had poached O'Reilly …

Apple's bringing smarter and automated iAds to iTunes Radio
by Guest Dan Thorp-Lancaster- 0 replies

Apple today has extended automated iAd purchasing to iTunes Radio, along with the introduction of a new ad-targeting system called Customer Match. The news was reported by AdAge, which says: Starting on Thursday, Apple is extending its mobile advertising network to iTunes Radio, its web streaming service that competes with Pandora, through programmatic ad buying. Previously, advertisers had to buy through Apple's lean iAd sales staff. The new feature also comes with updated targeting capabilities, using customer phone numbers and email addresses that can be cross-referenced anonymously against marketers' data. Apple originally started automating its iAd pu…

Where to start this week? With so much going on at Microsoft’s annual Convergence business community summit, held this year in Atlanta, we could almost call this week’s edition: “Convergence CliffsNotes.” Let’s get to it. Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella kicked off the premiere business event, Monday, with a keynote address highlighting how businesses can use data to help predict trends and better understand their customers, which can lead to greater demand for their products and services as well as increased customer loyalty. “In a world of big data, small patterns matter,” he said. As part of its spring content update, first-person shooter Modern Combat 5: Blackout is going free-to-play on the iPhone and iPad. Previously available for $5.99, Blackout was one of our favorite games without in-app purchases. The game is now free to download and play, and in-app purchases come along as a part of that. Blackout now features an energy system, which limits how often you can play. You'll get a certain amount of time to play for free, which can be extended by purchasing more energy. If you elect not to pay, you'll need to wait for your energy to refill. Players that have already paid for the game are given Veteran status. Veterans don't need to pay f…

ResearchKit was reportedly the topic of conversation at a recent Apple employee Q&A session hosted by SVP of Operations Jeff Williams and VP of software engineering Bud Tribble. Williams and Tribble reportedly answered many questions about Apple's new medical research framework. Topics included how the idea for ResearchKit came about, as well as the decision to make it open source. 9to5Mac: [bud Tribble] commented on the decision for making ResearchKit open source by saying, "If someone comes with a new way to measure the impact of Parkinson's disease, they can put that module in ResearchKit and other researchers can use that as well." He added that this stra…

Mac Switcher: Can my Windows Phone work with my Mac?
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
Just because you've bought a Mac doesn't mean you have to buy an iPhone too. Here's how to get your Windows Phone and your Mac working together. Windows Phone runs a distant third behind iOS and Android in terms of U.S. marketshare, but Windows Phone isn't something to ignore. A lot of Windows Phone handsets are inexpensive and work quite well. The appellation "Windows Phone" may give you a sense that such a device is not to be used with a Mac. But they can coexist quite happily. W.F. writes: "I just got my first Mac but I'm still using a Windows phone. Do I have to buy an iPhone if I want to sync data and listen to music from my Mac?" The short answer is no…
