It’s hard to believe that, after 12 great years, Windows Server 2003 extended support ends today. Over the last year, many customers have prepared and planned their migrations and have migrated to a modern infrastructure. Two customers that are already experiencing the significant value to their business following their migrations are Pella Corp and The Walsh Group. Pella Corp, a leading window and door manufacturer, migrated to the latest technology to support emerging needs of the business. The business was eager to harvest additional productivity gains by modernizing applications. By moving their older applications to Windows Server 2012 R2, they improved perform…

Hi everyone, we thought we would end the week with another build for you – but this time it’s for mobile. Build 10166 of the Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview is rolling out right now to Windows Insiders on the Fast ring. There are lots of small changes and feature tweaks in this build, but our major focus over the past few builds on mobile has been about improvements to core quality. Most of the known issues we listed for Build 10149 have been fixed. We also fixed the issue where the post-upgrade migration status screen was missing, which made the Lock screen appear frozen without the date and time for up to 10 minutes. The post-upgrade migration status screen should …

Following just over six months of public preview and a continuous flow of user-driven enhancements from our rapidly growing community, I’m excited to announce the new Power BI will be generally available on July 24. But the news doesn’t stop there – we’re making four big announcements today: The Power BI business analytics service (“Power BI 2.0”) will exit preview status, becoming a generally available service on July 24. This supersedes the Power BI for Office 365 service (“Power BI 1.0”), which we will continue to operate during a transition period as users migrate to the updated service. Power BI Desktop, (known before today as Power BI Designer), will also exit …

We’re entering the dog days of summer, folks, where in the Seattle area at least, it’s still uncharacteristically hot. No matter where you roam as the mercury rises, time to grab that ice-cold lemonade and catch up on a little Weekend Reading. This week, Microsoft introduced Tossup, a fun, fast way to organize your family outings, and your social life. The app, now available to download on iPhone and Android phones, was born from the Microsoft Garage, a place that encourages iteration, and quick evolution, to get great ideas out to the world. Speaking of great ideas, developers can now build Web tiles and use the cloud API for the Microsoft Band. This is “the fi…

Hi everyone, we have a new build for PCs we’re releasing today to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring – Build 10166. Just like the 3 builds we released last week, this build is all about bug fixing and fit-and-finish. Be sure to keep using the Windows Feedback app to send us feedback on any problems you’re hitting to help us make sure Windows 10 is awesome when we release it on July 29th! We also have something for you to try out if you live in the Seattle area. With Windows 10, we are giving people the ability to purchase paid Wi-Fi through the Windows Store via the Microsoft Wi-Fi app. You will know when you can purchase Wi-Fi when you see “Buy Wi-Fi from Windows Store…

  18. Last week was a short work week here in the United States as Friday was a federal holiday for the 4th of July Independence Day weekend. Despite only having four work days Microsoft got a lot accomplished by releasing three new builds of the Windows 10 Insider Preview (10158 on Monday, 10159 on Tuesday and 10162 on Thursday). Then late on Thursday evening the Microsoft Windows Team also released the ISO images for build 10162 so that Windows Insiders could download them to use for clean installs of this latest build. According to Gabe Aul, our Microsoft Insiders Ring Master, that build is expected to be released to Windows Insiders in the programs Slow Ring this week…

  19. After a very busy week that included three builds for Windows Insiders and detailing the plans for rolling out Windows 10 on 29 July 2015 it now appears that Microsoft will cross a very important step in the Windows 10 development cycle this week. Release to Manufacturing, more commonly known as RTM, is a point that marks Microsoft's readiness to push the final code to its OEM partners and ultimately end users on Windows 7 and 8.1 as an upgrade. The Windows RTM milestone used to normally occur a few months before the planned General Availability (GA) of the upcoming operating system but in this new era of Windows as a Service (WaaS) the OS is never really done and w…

  20. As you may know, installing an operating system from a USB flash drive is easier and faster than installing it from an optical disc. A USB flash drive is not as bulky as an optical disc and doesn't require an external case. You just take it out of your pocket, pull off the cap, and insert it into your computer's USB port. USB flash drives are faster than optical drives too. USB flash drives have read and write speeds that measure in 10x megabytes per second (MB/s), while optical disc read and write speeds measure in 1x MB/s. With that in mind, it's no surprise that there are a multitude of articles on the web that describe how to create a Windows installation packa…

Today, at Minecon 2015 it was announced that Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta is coming. It will be available for download in the Windows 10 Store beginning July 29, the same day Windows 10 first becomes available for PCs and tablets. Players who already have the PC edition of Minecraft will be able to download the Windows 10 beta version free. Others can download Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition at a discounted price of $10 throughout the beta period. Players who download Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition during the beta phase will still have the game when it comes out of beta, and receive all future updates to the game at no additional cost. Hi everyone, We have one more surprise for you this week – Build 10162, releasing to the Fast ring. We’re at the point in the development of Windows 10 where nearly every build is getting out to our internal rings, and passing the criteria for release to Windows Insiders. We’re focused at this point on bug fixing and final polish, so it’s much easier for each build to get all the way through than earlier in the cycle when we’re adding big new features. So now we find ourselves in a great situation, with an abundance of build candidates. We’re deciding how long to let each build stay with Windows Insiders so you can really exercise them and send feedback on any probl…

  24. Any version of Windows just performs better on newer equipment. That's a given. But, with Windows 10 so close to its official upgrade rollout, you might be wondering if your old PC can work adequately with the upgrade. The last thing you want (and Microsoft wants) is to have a horrible experience with this reported fantastic new operating system. Here's the minimum specs you need for the upgrade: A PC running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update A processor that is at least 1 GHz Depending on your PC architecture: 1 GB of RAM for 32-bit or 2 GB of RAM for 64-bit Also, depending your PC architecture: 16 GB of hard disk space for 32-bit or 20 GB of hard…

  25. Windows 10 comes out on July 29th, but you might have to wait until later to get it. Microsoft said today that it would be rolling out Windows 10 in waves, "slowly scaling up" the rollout as it sees how things are going. The intention seems to be playing it safe and making sure that Windows 10 is getting a good response and running smoothly across the millions of different systems out there. Microsoft may even issue updates to Windows 10 between its July 29th release date and the time that some early adopters are actually able to download it. Naturally, Windows Insiders will get Windows 10 first. It sounds as though Windows Insiders — who are already testing Wi…
