Original Title: How do I get rid of these apps? Recently I noticed a bunch of what look like apps that were left behind from games that I had played. The problem is I can't get rid of them. If I click on one of them and then click uninstall at the bottom of the screen, the windows uninstall screen in control panel pops up. Any ideas as to how to get rid of these? Can Malware damage to the files existing on the host?
by Guest Aria Abbasi- 0 replies

Hello guys, I'm somewhat aware of Malware and their actions. And also know how to get rid of them and clean the machine. And about the Malware, we all know that Malware can spread in the form of a Worm or a Virus. Viruses are Malware that require some form of user interaction to infect the user's device. On the other hand, Worms are Malware that can enter a device without any explicit user interaction. OK, my question: Can Malware damage to our files? For example consider I have various kinds of files, from a simple .MP3 file until .iso, .xlsx, .exe or programming files and etc. Can those Malware damage those files so that they aren't usable or repairable? …

So i took my old laptop drive out and i plugged it in my PC's SATA cable. Then i booted into it and it gave me a BSOD that immediately flashed then the pc restarted. I pressed disable auto restart on system failure and then it it said (stop: 0x00000007, 0xFFFFFFF something). I have reason to believe the hard drive has a boot sector virus because when it was in the laptop, One day i started it up and the screen stayed black so i thought maybe a virus overwrite the BIOS. Startup repair said- 'startup repair cannot fix this problem'. I can access the cmd which is extremely hard to do and i forgot how. Should i run chkdsk C:/. I dont have the installation disc with me. …

I have been getting restarts on my machine overnight (I have some scheduled tasks overnight) meaning when I wake up the scheduled tasks have not happened. Windows reports it had an unscheduled restart and checking the event viewer shows it has event 18 from the WHEA-Logger. Note: the machine is overclocked, but the clocking is a conservative OC using presets on the motherboard (4.6Gz was not stable so it is on 4.4, I have not tried to manually tweak it further because it's not worth the effort), with the RAM OC below the supported XMP profile. A 4 hour run with Prime95 testing the full instruction set (105W) showed no issues, and a CPU temperature not passing 60C w…

Recent activity shows my IP but while I'm sleeping
by Guest buzzzqwert- 0 replies

When I check my recent activity all entries are from my IP address but I also see Microsoft Exchange activity at 1AM or 3AM or 4AM, etc. and it isn't me. My laptop is off, my tablet is off, my phone is on but set in do not disturb although it uses Exchange. There are other PC's in the house that are on and likely in use at that time but they have their own account. What causes these odd hour activities to occur from my home's IP address on my username? Edit: When I look at the recent activity today I see where I logged in and then I see several more login's all from my own IP address. One time was simply signing in to read the recent activity. What trips a recen…

PC Mighty Max Big Time Nusance
by Guest Sharon816- 0 replies

I don't know how this was installed. I have grandkids and 2 "non-readers" for a while so I have been putting up with this for a while. Just recently I decided to unload some of my cable bill and utilize my laptop for tv. So I access Hulu Plus and AcornTV via my laptop with HDMI cable, works great especially since I am aging and eye site is not what it once was viewing my screen on the 46 inch flat screen is wonderful for me. This PC Mighty Max is really causing a great annoyance: I contacted MS about this problem and they sent instructions that I had already done: PC Mighty Max is pinned to my task manager "tray icon". Windows 7, deleted via Control Panel and deleted …

Strange file name for MRT.EXE
by Guest Susie1001- 0 replies
- 1.6k views
Hi everyone, Checking through my AVG for which files have 'Allow' next to them for internet connection, I came across the file for MRT.EXE but the actual name of it says: أداة إزالة البرامج الضارة لـ Microsoft Windows and underneath it says: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MRT.EXE To be on the safe side until I know what this file is, I have changed the settings rule to 'Block' and Logged any occurrences of this file. All of the other Microsoft files just have Windows or Microsoft and 'Product name' after it, so why would there be some Arabic text before it. Does anyone have a clue as to why this is and could it be a virus? I have done numerous scans and the …

Windows Image Backup with Microsoft Security Essentials active on a computer with KNOWN false...
by Guest Σπύρος Μουρελάτος- 0 replies

Scenario: windows 7 machine (x32/x64 doesn't really matter) Let's say a company machine with proprietary files with macros etc (all this kind of stuff that makes antivirus software crazy) MSE sees these files as malware/virus, so I have excluded them from their original location. I initiate a manual Windows Image Backup (on a remote network drive, but that doesn't really matter in this scenario) In this case, the backup fails because the Volume Shadow Copy of the (already excluded) "infected" known false positives is flagged by MSE again as malware and blocks the Windows Image Backup process from continuing. Workaround so far: disable MSE (not …

I posted an issue earlier and got a great solution (thanks gregm) so I thought Id post the ultimate nth row issue (btw the previously posted problem is a separate issue and unrelated). Here is my problem: I have a csv file with thousands of rows of data in the following format: Code: data10a data9a data8a data7a data6a data5a data4a data3a data2a data1a data10b data9b data8b data7b data6b data5b data4b data3b data2b data1b and so... I need a solution that will eliminate all rows in each group except the first five rows so the desired output is: Code: data10a data9a data8a data7a data6a data10b data9b data8b data7b data6b BTW …

Bootable Read-only

Hi Linux gurus, I spent the entire first quarter of this year trying to upgrade my 8 XP machines to similar Win7 before MS ceased support, and I really need to cut the MS umbilical cord ASAP before it strangles me. I am retired, and on limited income and can't afford to throw out my 8 existing perfectly good pentium 1G ram machines just to keep Bill Gates the richest man in the world, so I've been looking into alternative operating systems, and inevitably keep coming back to one or other flavour of Linux. Trouble is, although I was a Win2K MSCE, I know absolutely zilch about Linux, so I would very much appreciate some advice from those in the know, ie: you guys. …

This post started with me asking how to read error messages, and ended in me attempting to read one. I'm guessing that a lot of people here have done this a lot, and maybe still do it day in day out. I'd be interested to hear any thoughts on the below, I'm sure some of you might have gone about thing's a different way, or have some info to add. There are a lot of thing's that I don't know (obviously) about the beneath, and sometimes when error checking (especially with Google etc) It can be hard to draw the 'necessary knowledge' line, even more so when one's learning and doesn't have much knowledge and experience to cross reference against! Anyway, I was probab…

CSV File - Multiple rows to one row
by Guest phi16181- 0 replies

So I have been working with a csv export for a few days now and I have the data almost in the form I need it in. I need some advice on how best to proceed to get to the solution I need. Here is the problem: My csv export contains multiple rows (over 2000) of data in this format: Code: data1,data2,data3,data4 data1,data2,data3,data4 data1,data2,data3,data4 and I need to convert groups of three rows into one single line like this: Code: data1,data2,data3,data4,data1,data2,data3,data4,data1,data2,data3,data4 It looks like Bash and Python might be options for doing this. Any thoughts on how you might handle this would be greatly appreciated. Continue r…

squashfs system multiboot from sd/usb
by Guest badkarma- 0 replies
Hello. For a past few days I'm struggling to create sd card with few root filestystems to choose from on boot. The idea is to convert running system to squashfs file and put it on sd card. Systems should be readonly and any additional files added later should be kept on rw partition mounted on start. Any other files should be kept in RAM and lost after reboot. So partitions should be like this: 1st - vmlinuz, kernel, grub files, os1.squash, os2.squash and so on 2nd - mounted to, for instance to /mnt/ after boot with extra files available across systems (after succeeding booting OS at all :)) For testing purposes I'm using vmware, with one HDD with centos 6.5 ins…

New Pebble firmware lets you control music volume, rearrange apps in launcher
by Guest Phil Nickinson- 0 replies
A firmware update has made its way this evening from Palo Alto, Calif., to a Pebble smartwatch near you, and version 2.2 brings a couple of welcome improvements. First up is that you can now rearrange apps in the launcher. Just highlight it, then hold down the select button (that's the one in the middle on the right), then move the item up or down. It's especially useful because now apps that you use frequently aren't buried at the bottom. And almost as important is that you can now adjust the volume in the music app. Just hold down the select button, then choose either up or down to raise or lower the volume. It's quick, it's easy, and it's a nice addition. Also,…

Apple uses 'Strength' TV ad to focus on wearables and fitness apps
by Guest Chris Parsons- 0 replies

If you were tuned into the Stanley Cup finals you may have caught the new ad Apple is running. Dubbed 'Strength' and set aside the , the ad focuses on wearables and fitness apps available to use on iOS by showing folks using a number of them throughout the video. From running with Nike+, to weighing yourself using a WiThings scale, to using the Misfit Shine Activity and Sleep Monitor, Apple hit a lot of areas and ways iOS can help you be fit. It didn't make me want to put down the big ol' bag of potato chips I was eating but that's just me. With Apple's very own HealthKit now announced, I'm sure this won't be the last commercial we see using wearables and fitness t…

Here's how easy it is for app developers to support Family Sharing in iOS 8
by Guest Richard Devine- 0 replies
Family Sharing was just one of the many new features announced for iOS 8 at WWDC 2014 and better yet it'll be super simple for app developers to support it. Family Sharing allows up to 6 people to share iBooks, iTunes purchases and apps from the App Store and as an email to Apple developers describes, opting in and supporting it is a doddle: To make your apps available as part of Family Sharing, agree to the updated iOS Paid Applications and/or Mac Paid Applications agreement in Contracts, Tax, and Banking on iTunes Connect. To ensure that Family Sharing is also enabled for previously purchased apps, leave the appropriate checkbox selected on the agreements page. …

Back up and restore your app on Windows Phone 8.1, Part 2: App data
by Guest Windows Apps Team- 0 replies
This blog was written by Hector Barbera and Sean McKenna--Program Managers, Developer and Ecosystem Platform – Operating Systems Group In the first of this pair of posts, we covered one of the biggest additions to Windows Phone’s backup-and-restore functionality in the 8.1 release: the Start screen. In this post, we’ll cover the other major addition: app data. App data often includes valuable settings, configurations, game state, and usage history, any of which can take a long time to recreate. When this data doesn’t migrate to a new device, it’s both an inconvenience for the user and a loss of hours of valuable engagement with your app. With the addition of app-data…
