iFixit posts repair and replacement guides for Apple Watch parts
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
iFixit has published a set of repair manuals focusing on different aspects of the Apple Watch. Following their teardown of the Apple Watch last week, iFixit has posted four guides for replacing different parts of the device. There are currently guides available for replacing the battery, NFC antenna, and screen. There is also a guide for replacing the adhesive in the watch, which will need to be done after any repairs you make. Of course, you're free to do what you want with products that you've purchased, and if repairing your gadgets on your own is something you have experience in, then by all means, follow these guides. However, for most, it's probably best to ge…

iPad Air 2 review: Six months later
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies
Apple's iPad Air 2 has been in our lives for six months now. Here's how it's faring. We've had just over half a year to test and use Apple's latest iPad — to feel out if the company's tablet is settling in as a valued device in our lives, or just another paperweight. Here's what the iMore team had to say about the iPad Air 2, six months later. Design Rene: The iPad Air 2 is just ridiculous. Even six months out I can't believe Apple's hardware team was able to pack this much power into a casing that's even lighter than the original. The lightness is what really does it for me, though. I use the iPad to read or watch video at night, browse the web, catch up on …

There are a lot of purchases you can make with the information on the front of a credit card. But ID thieves who have the card number, name, and expiration date will still hit a speedbump if they have to enter that (usually 3-digit) security code on the back of a victim’s card. Notice that we said “speedbump” and not “dead end,” because some scammers have figured out how to get this crucial info from their victims. According to our colleagues at Consumer Reports, the security code scam works by taking advantage of the near-constant news of data breaches that have hit retailers in recent years. Once a scammer has the main information for the card, they can call t…

Microsoft stopped actively developing Windows Media Center in 2009, but the company still shipped an unmodified version in an upgrade pack for Windows 8. The software giant is planning to kill off Media Center in Windows 10, meaning any PCs upgraded from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 will lose the feature. Microsoft confirmed the plan to ZDNet’s Ed Bott in a recent interview. It’s not a surprise move, but Windows Media Center has a passionate and loyal following which will undoubtedly mourn the loss of the feature. Microsoft first introduced Windows Media Center in 2001 as a separate Windows XP version. It was designed to run fullscreen as a media player, and support televi…

Apple Watch gets reviewed — for accessibility
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

Molly Watt, who has Usher Syndrome Type 2a, and severely limited sight and hearing, recently got her Apple Watch She spent some time with it and has written a preliminary review. It's focused on the accessibility features, and her findings so far are impressive to say the least. mollywatt.com: So far for me the most useful App on the Apple Watch is Maps – on my iPhone I can plan my journey from one destination to another, for me it will be on foot with Unis my guidedog. This is where Haptics really come into its own – I can be directed without hearing or sight, but by a series of taps via the watch onto my wrist – 12 taps means turn right at the junction or 3 pai…

Should you get a stylus for your Apple Watch?
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies
No. You don't need a stylus for your Apple Watch. Seriously, folks. I've had three different people email me to ask to do a roundup of the best styluses for Apple Watch since the device's launch, and all I can kind of do is shake my head. Unlike the iPad or even the iPhone, the Watch isn't designed to be an in-depth sketching platform. No one's looking to the artist who will make the first gallery-ready "Watch drawings". Digital Touch is fun, and there are plenty of ways to get better at it, but a stylus is not practical for sketching. Where are you going to keep it? Behind your ear? In a bag? Clipped to the underside of your super-classy Watch band? But becaus…

NSFW: Learning and unlearning, Taptic panic
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies

Something interesting happened to me this past year: My Mac ceased to have any use for me as a document scanner. The iPhone took it over. Now, in fairness, I don't do any really high-resolution scanning. For me scanning is pure utility: Needing to legibly digitize real-world documents. But it's an evolution. And so much of how we use our devices is about evolution. Even a couple of years ago, having a scanner was a core requirement of whatever printer I was shopping for. I still have that printer — a multifunction device that scans, prints and faxes. But for the occasional page printed, it doesn't see a lot of action these days. Now I use Scanner Pro from Readd…

by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

Apple is attempting to raise the appeal of its upcoming Madison Avenue store, promising respect for the neighborhood with an earlier closing time, private shopping, and more, as the store faces opposition from area residents. The 940 Madison Avenue Apple Retail Store is facing opposition from residents who fear that the store will disrupt the neighborhood, attracting long lines of customers, camping out for the next Apple product launch. Apple is hoping to calm these fears with assurances that the new store will be tailored to fit in with the community, according to The Wall Street Journal "The Upper East Side store is designed to serve an important role in the…

How to create and manage alarms on Apple Watch
by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies
Alarms on your Apple Watch are separate from your iPhone alarms, but they can work together. Just like your iPhone, your Apple Watch comes with a built-in Alarms app to keep you from missing — or sleeping through — anything important. The two can work together quite nicely, or you can choose to just use one device's Alarms app. Here's everything you need to know. The difference between iPhone alarms and Watch alarms First and foremost: Alarms on your Apple Watch are completely separate from those that live in the Clock app on your iPhone. If you launch the Alarms app on your Watch, you won't see alarms from your iPhone, and vice versa. However, iPhone alarms…

How's your Apple Watch battery life?
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Apple said the Apple Watch should last you through the day — so is it? The currency of mobile devices is battery life. Every feature from the lightness of the hardware to the brightness of the display to the data being transferred has a price paid for in power. Watches are even smaller than phones, which means they have less energy to begin with and have to pay even more attention to efficiency. That brings us to the Apple Watch and for some of us, the battery life we've experienced during our first full week of using it. How's your Apple Watch battery life? Apple set Apple Watch battery life expectations at up to 18 hours for the following use case: 90 time chec…

Six Apple Watch features we'd love to see on the next iPhone
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
The Apple Watch is something new, and that means it's filled with fresh and interesting ideas — ideas that could be something great on the company's next iPhone. Apple has been working on its smartphone for over a decade, and iterating on that work going on eight years. Come this fall, we'll almost certainly see a new generation of iPhone models — let's call them iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, to stick to pattern — with iOS 9 to go with them. The Apple Watch, in contrast, has undergone related but distinct development for just about four years now. It's Apple's signature hardware — but wearable — and more importantly, it's iOS, rethought for the wrist. Jony Ive, Kevi…

While Microsoft is planning to launch Windows 10 on PCs this summer, the phone part of the operating system will debut at a later date. Speaking at a media event at Build in San Francisco today, Microsoft's Joe Belfiore explained the company's plans for the launch of Windows 10. "Our phone builds have not been as far along as our PC builds," explained Belfiore. "We’re adapting the phone experiences later than we’re adding the PC experiences." That slower progress means Windows 10 on phones will show up after the PC launch this summer. "There are devices and features that will come not on launch date, but following it," says Belfiore. "From the device view, our m…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZ2m0b04z7c Microsoft originally commissioned English musician Brian Eno to create the startup sound for Windows 95. Eno’s piece of music was known widely as the Windows sound. At just over three seconds long, it became an iconic sound as Windows 95 grew in popularity. Microsoft has since changed its sound schemes for many Windows versions over the years, but now it appears to be evoking memories of the summer of 1995 with Windows 10. The Windows 10 startup sound is still a mystery. Russian site WP7 Forum has discovered a number of new system sounds in an unreleased preview version of Windows 10. While they’re not identical to…

Time Warner CEO Jeffrey Bewkes says he won't be surprised if and when Apple announces a streaming TV service. Bewkes expressed his confidence in a potential Apple streaming services during Time Warner's earning's call. Such a service has been widely-reported, and is reportedly aiming for a fall launch. Bewkes said that such a move wouldn't be surprising from Apple, who earlier this month partnered with Time Warner to launch HBO Now. How to keep Mac email from giving away info to spammers
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies

How your Mail app is set to load remote content can give e-mail scammers valuable information about you. A setting in Apple's Mail app for OS X that makes it more convenient to view your emails may also be telling scammers that you're reading your emails. To make your Mac more secure from potential threats, you can disable the remote content loading function. Follow along and we'll walk you through how! Back in the good old days, emails used to contain text, and that was it. Now they're chock-full of complex graphics and HTML-based layouts. Most of the content you see isn't actually in the email: It's stored on a remote server and loaded when you view the message.…

Learn from the iOS and Mac community's top designers and personalities right in the heart of San Francisco. I love being in San Francisco during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference: It's a great way to catch up with friends and other awesome folks in the community, and there are always so many interesting events outside of Moscone West that make it possible. It's one of the big reasons I'm thrilled to say I'll be presenting at Layers, Jessie Char and Elaine Pow's new conference centered around iOS and Mac design. It's such a smart move to have a design-focused conference during the relatively developer-focused WWDC — the Apple community has lots of events b…

Build 2015 marks an important step in our journey with developers – and it’s just the beginning
by Guest Steve Guggenheimer- 0 replies

Kicking off Day 2 of Build today, I had the pleasure of expanding on the news and vision that Satya, Scott and Terry shared yesterday. We built upon the big ideas and bold ambitions from Day 1 when we announced our intention to create a world of 1 billion Windows 10 devices, and to create the most attractive development platform ever through the Universal Windows Platform (with new “bridge” toolkits) and the power of harnessing data in the cloud. We took the next step today by grounding these concepts in practical business conversations and code. Add in some announcements of our own, and we were able to show real-world scenarios and solutions from some of our partners to …

Taking a guess at the computer powering the Apple Watch
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

ABI Research has taken apart the Apple Watch's S1 computer-on-a-chip. Let's get this out of the way — it's going to be really hard to properly identify what Apple's doing withe S1 due to the amount of custom silicon they're doing these days, but it's still interesting to see the educated guesses that are surfacing about the heart of the Apple Watch. This time it's ABI Research, and what they found was surprisingly similar to the iPhone and iPad: "The design is an obvious variation from Apple's smartphones, with many high-end functions / chips included that normally would not be found in a simple watch," comments Jim Mielke, VP Engineering at ABI Research and head…
