Bill Gates is starting another Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, but as any regular AMA visitor knows, he first needs to verify his identity with a photo. Usually that means holding up a sheet of paper with your name and the date on it, but Gates went for something far more interesting this time: he restaged an extremely chill photo of himself in high school, laying back on a desk while taking a call. It's a wonderfully faithful recreation that has Gates looking... I wouldn't exactly say cool, but as cool as you could hope over 40 years later. Images credit: The Gates Notes. The AMA is just getting started, and already Gates has responded to a question about hi…

When you think of Microsoft, what product first comes to mind? Windows, you say? How quaint. Yes, you’re probably reading this on a Windows-based PC, but Windows itself matters less and less to Microsoft. Ed Bott recently broke down Microsoft’s latest 10-Q, its quarterly report to the Securities and Exchange Commission. What he found out about how Microsoft is making money these days is very interesting. Do you think that Windows is number one in bringing in the cash? It’s a reasonable assumption. Windows for years was the undisputed cash cow for Microsoft, and the company just rolled out a new version, Windows 10, that has been deemed a great improvement over …

Project Fi is ditching the invite system. 10 months after Google unveiled its own mobile network, which lets consumers pay only for the amount of data they use each month, the company is opening access to everyone inside the United States. "With Project Fi, we deliver fast wireless service with the flexibility to use it where you want (even internationally) and a monthly bill that’s simple and easy to understand," wrote Simon Arscott, Fi's product manager, in a blog post. "Today, we’re excited to be exiting our invitation-only mode and opening up Project Fi so that people across the U.S. can now sign up for service without having to wait in-line for an invite." Fo…

What is it they say about March? In like a lion? That certainly held true at Microsoft this week. For starters, the company helped customers play a little defense, whether they were college basketball fans gearing up for March Madness or enterprises seeking added layers of security to protect against threats to data. But perhaps the most exciting news this week was for developers, many of whom will soon get their hands on a Microsoft HoloLens Development Edition. Microsoft announced Monday that developer applicants will now start receiving invitations to purchase HoloLens – which will begin shipping on March 30 – and that the company is making available to devel…

Antivirus tools are the aircraft flotation devices of PCs: They give you a false sense of security. Despite efforts by security companies to thwart cyber attacks, hackers keep finding new ways into unsuspecting people's computers and systems. That's why Microsoft is adding a new feature to its Windows Defender line of anti-hacking tools: When hackers do get in, Microsoft will help customers identify the attacks and stop them before they spread. Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection isn't admitting defeat, per se. But it's taking an important step towards coping with reality: Your system is going to get hacked, and you'd better be prepared when it does. …

We designed Windows 10 from the very beginning to be our most secure platform ever. With features like Credential Guard, Device Guard, Windows Hello, and Enterprise Data Protection, Windows 10 offers unique defenses from attacks. Windows Defender, our free anti-malware service, provides protection to almost 300 million devices – every day. And Windows continues to raise the defenses in the system every month as any security issues are investigated and proactively updated through Windows Update. This ongoing commitment to security has led to strong demand from enterprise customers. From the Department of Defense, which is adopting Windows 10 across all branches of servi…

We continue to be excited by the strong momentum we see for Windows 10 – from well over 200 million devices running Windows 10, to developers embracing Windows 10 and delivering all new apps and experiences, to enterprise customers like the US Department of Defense adopting Windows 10 at record pace. And now, according to Futuresource*, we see that Windows continues to be the leading, global platform for K-12 education, with twice as many Windows devices shipped in 2015 as the closest competitor. In fact, in the last year alone, Futuresource is reporting a 20% spike in Windows device sales. “Microsoft is the clear global market leader, reaching 47% of the mobile com…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6SVsf0k2i0 Ahead of the Oscars, Microsoft has started airing a series of ads that focus on Windows 10, gross bugs, and the features Windows machines have that Macs don't. The spots all feature a pair of women discussing how Windows 10 helps their business — they highlight Cortana, touchscreens, and Windows Hello. But the real point of the ads is that Apple doesn't offer equivalents to any of these things on the desktop. "I don't have a touchscreen on my Mac. I'm jealous of that," one woman says. In another, "[Cortana's] so helpful ... Even on the new Macs, they don't have that." Each ad takes a moment to call out something the Mac do…

Our creative director Aurich Lawson is building a PC to power a custom arcade cabinet, and he was having trouble picking a processor. Not because he didn’t know what he needed, but because he was having trouble matching what he needed (the cheapest quad-core CPU that meets the recommended requirements for Street Fighter V) with what Intel was offering (five different obfuscated brands spread out over multiple sockets and architectures). And if you’re building a PC now after having been out of the game for a few years, it can be exceptionally confusing. Around the turn of the millennium you just had Celeron and Pentium. One name meant “cut-down low-end” and one meant “h…

Millions of people do their banking online through their computers, laptops or tablets and find their experience to be quick, easy and convenient. In addition, according to a study last year by the Federal Reserve, 52% of smartphone owners use their smartphones for mobile banking, which is not surprising since so many of us, particularly younger Americans, do much of our financial transactions of all kinds on our smartphones. But how safe are we when doing online or mobile banking? The bad news is that we can be quite susceptible to having our identities stolen and our bank accounts emptied when doing online or mobile banking. The good news is, however, that how s…
