In the upcoming Quantum Break, time is power. Today’s all-new Quantum Break trailer shows us a bit more of what we can expect when the game hits Xbox One and Windows 10 on April 5. The time-bending action-adventure fuses pulse-pounding gameplay with a lavishly-produced, episodic series that is determined by your choices in the game (and, in turn, helps to chart the course of your future adventures). The result is an epic, modern-day multimedia thriller. The new trailer also gives us a better look at Quantum Break’s star-studded cast, led by Shawn Ashmore (“X-Men: Days of Future Past”), whose gritty Jack Joyce tackles the villainous corporation Monarch Solutions. Apple isn’t the only company fighting against government-backed cyber attacks. While Apple and the FBI bicker over user security, Google is bringing security into the public eye in a different way – by simply telling you what’s going on. The company will be increasing the visibility of Gmail security warnings to try and help people better protect themselves when sending and receiving emails. One of the changes is the expansion of the “safe browsing” notifications, which basically tell you when you’re about to open a suspicious link from an email. These warnings will show up when a link is clicked, but before the link actually opens, presenting users with one final o…

While all of us regular Verizon customers can give a sigh of relief that our information wasn’t posted online in a recent hack attack, nearly 1.5 million customers of Verizon Enterprise Solutions — the portion of the company that deals with other businesses’ data breaches — weren’t so lucky. Krebs on Security reports the data — including contact information for the 1.5 million customers — was posted for sale on an “underground cybercrime forum” earlier this week. Hackers advertised the sale of 100,000 records for $10,000 or all of the information for $100,000. The group also offered the option for buyers to purchase information about security vulnerabilities in Ver…

As many of you know by now, on Wednesday we launched a chatbot called Tay. We are deeply sorry for the unintended offensive and hurtful tweets from Tay, which do not represent who we are or what we stand for, nor how we designed Tay. Tay is now offline and we’ll look to bring Tay back only when we are confident we can better anticipate malicious intent that conflicts with our principles and values. I want to share what we learned and how we’re taking these lessons forward. For context, Tay was not the first artificial intelligence application we released into the online social world. In China, our XiaoIce chatbot is being used by some 40 million people, delighting w…

A new ransomware family was discovered in the past weeks, one that infects users' computers via poorly secured TeamViewer installations and then encrypts all the their data, adding the ".surprise" extension to all files. The first signs of this new ransomware infection were spotted on the Bleeping Computer forums, a common place these days where ransomware victims converge asking for help. At first, users were surprised to find their files locked and inaccessible, with three new files added to their desktops. These were the ransom notes, and they informed the user that their files were now encrypted, and to get them back, victims should contact the ransomware auth…

She was supposed to come off as a normal teenage girl. But less than a day after her debut on Twitter, Microsoft's chatbot—an AI system called "Tay.ai"—unexpectedly turned into a Hitler-loving, feminist-bashing troll. So what went wrong? TechRepublic turns to the AI experts for insight into what happened and how we can learn from it. Tay, the creation of Microsoft's Technology and Research and Bing teams, was an experiment aimed at learning through conversations. She was targeted at American 18 to 24-year olds—primary social media users, according to Microsoft—and "designed to engage and entertain people where they connect with each other online through casual and play…

You know that part about the FBI needing Apple's help to unlock a terrorist's iPhone 5C? Never mind. That was the unexpected message from the US Department of Justice on Monday, when it indefinitely stalled court proceedings that had been scheduled for Tuesday. Now, instead of turning to the court, the Justice Department would try a mysterious technique it's heard about that could crack the phone's encryption without Apple's help. The feds had been pushing hard to get Apple to do the dirty work, a quest that burst into public view in February in a heated and high-stakes debate over the balance between personal privacy and national security. In the standoff, Apple ha…

Apple and the FBI have been fighting very publicly for the last month about national security, iPhones, and the intersection of privacy and encryption with those things. Their legal battle was supposed to be heard in court in California this afternoon — except the FBI has asked for a delay, saying that actually, maybe they don’t need Apple to create a backdoor to get what they want after all. A brief overview of the story so far: the FBI has in their possession an iPhone belonging to Syed Farook, one of the now-deceased shooters from the attack in San Bernardino last December. They want to search the contents of that iPhone as part of their continuing investigation. Bu…

Attackers recently compromised the start page used by Lenovo PC customers in order to redirect users to the malicious Angler exploit kit. F-Secure security advisor Sean Sullivan explains in a blog post how upstream detection reports from the security firm's clients indicate that the compromise occurred on March 13th: "For some (relatively short) period of time, the portal site 'startpage.lenovo.com' redirected visitors towards the infamous Angler exploit kit." The notorious Angler exploit kit is well known in the world of crypto-ransomware. Back in October of last year, researchers with Cisco's Talos Security Intelligence and Research Group helped block ab…

Microsoft held a party with overtly sexist themes at GDC 2016 this week — one that Xbox chief Phil Spencer today called "unequivocally wrong." It's a troubling incident in a long history of sexism at professional conferences and events in the gaming industry, especially considering Microsoft's enormous influence. The party, which showcased women in revealing costumes dancing on podiums, served to alienate several attendees who shared their discomfort and disappointment online. Spencer quickly denounced and disavowed his company's actions today, stating that the event "represented Xbox and Microsoft in a way that was not consistent or aligned to our values." He said the…

Microsoft today retreated from an earlier retirement date for Windows 7 and 8.1 support on newer hardware, saying that it would now support those OSes on PCs running Intel's Skylake silicon until July 2018. The decision is a partial rollback of a January announcement that Microsoft called a "clarification" of its support policy. Under the January plan, Microsoft would have ended support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on July 17, 2017, if the operating systems were powering machines equipped with its now-current Skylake processor family. At the time, Microsoft credited the decision to Windows 7's age and the hassle that Microsoft and OEMs would have to go through to e…

Here is a new entry from Gigabyte using the budget oriented AMD 970 chipset. It appears to compete with the very successful MSI 970 gaming motherboard with it's red racer oriented theme. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128898 Here is the link to the board on Gigabyte's site. http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5779#ov Here is a nice picture of the board itself_ This would probably be a great solution for an FX 8370/8350/8320, all of which are also coming down in prices recently in the face of Intel's successful Skylake offerings. I have not built with this Gigabyte board but I have built with a few o…

I am excited to share that we have shipped the first preview release of Microsoft Edge with extensions support to Windows Insiders. Since the beginning of the Microsoft Edge project, our roadmap has always included extensions in order to support a vibrant community of developer innovation on top of the browser, enabling new and interesting scenarios for our customers. As we have also shared, one of our highest priorities is to ensure that Microsoft Edge is the safest, most reliable and fastest browser we could build, and our experience over the past 20 years has taught us that poorly written or even malicious add-ons were a huge source of security, reliability and perf…
