Apple expands same-day courier delivery option to its online store
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
Apple has expanded its same-day courier delivery options to their online store. Apple's same-day delivery option for select products, which debuted last week in the Apple Store app, is now available from its online store. Some products are now showing courier delivery on the store, while Apple's store help site now lists it as a delivery option. The courier option comes with a $19 delivery fee, and offers a four-hour delivery window. The option is still only available in certain markets, and comes thanks to a partnership between Apple and Postmates. Unfortunately, courier service is not available in every Postmates market just yet. Source: Apple, via: 9to5Mac …

Celebrate National Donut Day with these apps, games and iBooks!
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies

It's National Donut Day! Instead of fattening up on donuts, try these donut-related apps. National Donut Day has been around since the 1930s, and there's a serious reason behind it: It honors the men and women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. National donut chains and mom and pop bakeries around the country are celebrating with free donuts today, but if you're on a diet or otherwise restricted, you can still get in on the fun. Turns out there are a bunch of donut-related apps and games on the App Store. Most of these are free to download but sport some sort of in-app purchases. You might want to put some parental restrictions on your donut-crazed ki…

Microsoft wants you to have a free Windows 10 upgrade, and they really want you to use Windows Update to get it over the Internet. If you have a PC that qualifies for the upgrade, you should do this if possible. It really is the best, fastest, cleanest option for the vast majority of Windows PCs. But a lot of my readers want traditional installer files, either on a DVD or in an ISO image file that is the equivalent of a DVD. If you are old school, you want an ISO because installing Windows on bare metal is just what one does, period. I get that, I really do. Having that installer image available gives you access to some installation and repair options that you do…

This article, When Windows 10 arrives, will your files and apps survive?, originally appeared on CNET.com. You may run into some compatibility bumps if you upgrade to Windows 10. Set to debut July 29, Windows 10 will be free for one year for anyone running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. And it will be a direct upgrade, meaning you can run the Windows 10 installation in Windows 7 or 8.1, and you should end up with Windows 10 in the end. Windows 10 marks Microsoft's big push to get itself back on course after the miscues of Windows 8, so every little thing counts -- including getting the installation correct right off the bat. Not all software upgrades go smoothl…

Lack of customer data keeping some merchants from supporting Apple Pay
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
As Apple continues its push for Apple Pay across the U.S., it seems that many retailers remain skeptical about the system. Despite the progress that they have made with Apple Pay since it launched last October, Apple is still taking an aggressive approach in their attempts to get retailers on board. The company has apparently lined up about half of the top 100 U.S. retailers to use the system in 2015. However, many retailers are apparently still choosing to hold off on using Apple Pay, with the primary sticking points being lack of customer interest and limited access to customer data, according to Reuters: For 28 of the retailers surveyed by Reuters, lack of …

Microsoft has opened up access to its Skype for Web beta to everyone in the US and the UK. Beta access to Skype for Web is now open to a much wider range of people. All new and existing users in both the US and the UK can take a look the next big thing from Skype. To use it, you will need to download Skype for Web plug-in. Microsoft initially started rolling out beta invitations in March. It allows users to place Skype calls through a web browser, removing the need to download a standalone application. It has the major features you would expect from Skype, including messaging, audio calls, and video calls. No word yet on a release date of the full product, bu…

How to use Gatekeeper on your Mac
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
Gatekeeper is one of the Mac's main lines of defense against malware. Gatekeeper has been built into OS X since the days of Mountain Lion, but if you open up Spotlight and search for it, you won't find an app or system preference by that name. Gatekeeper is what Apple calls OS X's defense against "malware" — malicious software. Gatekeeper restricts how software from third-party developers runs on your Mac, so understanding what it is and how it works can be pretty important. What is Gatekeeper and should you use it? Apple offers the Mac App Store as a safe and convenient way to download apps for your Mac (and to update system software too). It operates similarl…

IDC recently reported that by the end of this decade the total amount of data on Earth will be around 40 zettabytes – a zettabyte is a ‘1’ followed by twenty-one ‘0’s.[1] The need for all this data and the cloud applications that utilize it, have caused the demand for infrastructure to grow exponentially, and spending on public cloud services is expected to sky rocket to an estimated $175 billion by 2020.[2] This week we announced several investments to help meet this demand and bring Azure, Office 365 and Dynamics CRM Online to more customers and more countries around the world. With services soon to be available in 22 regions for Azure, and 9 regions for Office 365 a…

In an interesting interview with the London Evening Standard, designer Marc Newson opened up just a little bit about his time at Apple so far. Designer Marc Newson opened up a bit about working with Apple in an interview, published last month in London Evening Standard. Although his position at Apple was only announced last September, Newson has been collaborating with his friend Jony Ive for a while, including some unspecified work on the Apple Watch. While details on his position at Apple are still scarce (he's working on "special projects"), he's currently thinking about how technology will continue to intersect with fashion, according to an interview with the Londo…

Using the Ecobee3 Wi-Fi thermostat with your Apple Watch
by Guest Georgia- 0 replies

The only thing better than controlling your Ecobee3 Wi-Fi thermostat with your iPhone is... controlling it with your Apple Watch! The Ecobee3 can be controlled by the on-device touch-screen, the ecobee3 iPhone app, and now also with the Apple Watch. I have to admit, even though it's limited, it's also absolutely amazing. The idea that I can monitor and control the climate in my house from the kitchen table, from bed, from the back porch, or from far away is something straight out of science fiction. The Ecobee3 watch app tells you the current temperature and the temperature it's supposed to be. Those will always be slightly different, but knowing both you can adju…

What do Windows, Skype, Xbox Live and OneDrive have in common? One simpler service agreement and privacy statement from Microsoft. In a world of more personalized computing, customers need meaningful transparency and privacy protections. And those aren’t possible unless we get the basics right. For consumer services, that starts with clear terms and policies that both respect individual privacy and don’t require a law degree to read. In an effort to further simplify the terms and policies for our customers, we’re updating the Microsoft Services Agreement and the Microsoft Privacy Statement effective Aug. 1 to reflect our latest services in a more streamlined format.…

Tweetbot 2.0 for Mac brings Tapbots' signature look into the age of Yosemite
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

It's clean, it's crisp, and you better believe Tweetbot 2.0 for Mac is vibrant! The transition from the old, richly textured look of Apple software to the current, more physical age meant a lot of designers and apps had to figure out how to translate their personality from rendered pixels to physics and animation. Tapbots and designer Mark Jardine had among the most distinctive styles of the previous era. Tweetbot 3 for iPhone showed that his skills were every bit as fierce in the post iOS-era. So how do they hold up post-Yosemite? $12.99 - Download now I've been testing Tweetbot 2.0 for Mac since it went into beta, and I've gotten so used to it I had …
