by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies

Add some more power to your Dock with a Terminal command: Show your recently used apps, documents, and more. You can drag any item from the Finder into your Mac's Dock to access it quickly. But this will quickly clutter your Dock with a lot of stuff that you may still access infrequently. Instead, check out this quick tip for the command line that lets you access recently opened documents, apps, servers, and other items. If you've never used Terminal before, you'll find it in the Applications > Utilities folder on your Mac. 8 Apple Watch fixes I want in the next software update
by Guest Brianna Wu- 0 replies
The Apple Watch has correctly been lauded by critics as the best wearable on the market to date. That said, it's a first generation product — and it shows. The central problem with the Apple Watch is its software. When I hand someone an iPhone, its user interface is intuitive. Yet to me, the Apple Watch isn't something that's easy to understand. On top of that, for a company that's known for sweating the details, Apple has seemingly missed a few with its software. I like my Apple Watch. It's great. But here are eight simple software changes — four fitness-based quirks, four general tweaks — that would make it even better. 1. Workouts need to end automatically …

Everything you need to know about Apple TV and HomeKit
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies

Inside your home, you control your HomeKit accessories with Siri. Outside your home, Siri talks to your Apple TV. Your third-generation Apple TV may be getting a bit long in the tooth hardware-wise, but it stil has some skin in the new software features game: Its recent 7.0 update included support for extending communication with your HomeKit accessories outside your local Wi-Fi network. I've had a ton of people ask me about this feature since HomeKit products officially started rolling out last Tuesday, so here's the deal. It's not (nor will it be) a HomeKit bridge A HomeKit extender does not a HomeKit bridge make: Just because your Apple TV can talk to Hom…

Verizon's disaster readiness is an impressive combination of hardware and manpower
by Guest Russell Holly- 0 replies

There are people out there who think about and plan for disasters all day every day, and some of those folks work at Verizon. Our data and communications networks, both physical and wireless, are parts of critical infrastructure with lasting consequences when we can't access them, especially during a disaster situation. When they aren't busy showing you speckled red maps and boasting superior coverage in the US, Verizon Wireless is pouring money into backup plans and emergency preparedness scenarios that involve every aspect of the company. Verizon has a team dedicated to planning for the worst, and the team has proven themselves many times in the past as more than…

Sport Band for Apple Watch review
by Guest Serenity Caldwell- 0 replies
Colorful. Smooth. Sporty. The Apple Watch's base-level band is anything but cheap. I had no choice in the matter of getting a Sport band: I ordered an Apple Watch Sport, and it's the only band you can get in the box with the Sport collection. You do have a choice of color, at the least: white, blue, pink, green, or (if you opt for the Space Grey aluminum model) black. I chose white for my initial purchase, thinking it would go well with most everything, and anyway, I was going to swap it for a Milanese as soon as the separate $129 band shipped. It's been about a month and a half since that thought, and surprise: I've found myself only using the Milanese for special,…

WWDC starts in less than a week, and Apple is already decking out Moscone West with Apple banners and logos. We're less than a week away from the June 8 kickoff of WWDC, and Apple has started decorating the venue, San Francisco's Moscone West, with Apple logos and banners in preparation for the event. WWDC 2015 is set to kick off on June 8 at 10 a.m. PDT, and Apple will of course be live streaming the keynote to Apple TVs, iPhones, iPads, and on the web, just as in years past. Throughout the keynote, it's expected we'll hear what Apple has in store for iOS 9, Apple Music, and OS X 10.11. Unfortunately, it's looking less and less likely that we'll get an Apple TV r…

Insanely popular word game, Words With Friends, has picked up Apple Watch support, bringing notifications and much more right to your wrist. If you're big into the popular social word game, Words with Friends, keeping track of your games and notifications just got a bit easier with Apple Watch support. Additionally, you can track how many moves you have left and chat with friends right from your wrist. Apple increases lead as top smartphone manufacturer by nearly 2%, according to comScore
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
Apple was once again the top U.S. smartphone manufacturer, according to the latest analysis from comScore. Between January and April 2015, Apple held its spot as the top smartphone manufacturer in the U.S., with 43.1% of all smartphone purchases. That's up from 41.3% in January, no doubt buoyed by strong iPhone 6 sales during that period. They were followed by Samsung at 28.6%, with LG at 8.4%, Motorola at 4.9%, and HTC coming in fifth with 3.7% of the market. Android is still the most popular operating system, though its share dipped slightly to 52.2%. iOS rose to 43.1%, up from 41.3% in January. Windows Phone held the third spot, though with a decrease from 3.6% t…

Pebble Time iOS app clears the review hurdle
by Guest Dan Thorp-Lancaster- 0 replies
Good news, Pebble Time owners: your iPhone companion app has been approved and should be available to download. Earlier this week, we reported that the companion app for the Pebble Time was stuck in app store review, leaving owners of the wearable without a way to sync to their iPhones. That snag appears to be cleared up, as Pebble now says the app is out of review and should be available to download. For what it's worth, the link to the app is returning an error for us at the moment. However, it sometimes takes new apps an hour or two to show up in the App Store after being approved, so it should go live relatively soon. So, if you've been eagerly waiting to wait…

Sense8 debuts on Netflix, here's how to watch on your Apple devices
by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies

Want to watch the new Netflix orignal series Sense8? Then here's how to to just that on your Apple device. Netflix's latest, and perhaps biggest original series, Sense8 is now available to watch. All 12 episodes of this first season are now available to subscribers through Netflix's site, as well as its mobile apps. And just what, you may ask, is Sense8 all about? First of all, it comes from the minds of The Wachowskis, best known as the writers and directors of the Matrix movie trilogy. The duo teamed up with J. Michael Straczynski, the creator of the famed sci-fi TV series Babylon 5, to write all the episodes and The Wachowskis directed several of them. Here…

Apple reportedly considering lowering the cut it takes on media apps
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
Apple is reportedly preparing to change the percentage it takes from media sales made through the App Stores. Apple is reportedly in discussion with media companies about a potential reduction in the percentage Apple takes from the sale of apps, subscriptions, and in-app purchases transacted on the App Store. Currently, all apps and all digital transactions work under the same "agency model" — developers set the price and Apple takes 30% off the top. It's the "all apps" part that might be changing. The Financial Times reports: The iPhone maker is discussing new commercial terms with media companies, people familiar with the matter said, to change the 70/30 "Apple…

Merchants aren't 'skeptical' of Apple Pay, they're just self-serving
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Apple Pay isn't everywhere yet, but where it's going tells me a lot about where I'll want to be. Apple Pay, the contactless payment system announced by Apple last September, absolutely faces challenges when it comes to gaining widespread adoption by an industry not always aligned with the best interests of the customer. No, not Hollywood — big retail. The top 100 merchants in the United States of America. Reuters ran a survey to find out what those challenges were, but framed the results in such a way as to make the merchants seem "skeptical", when the actual data seems to suggest a far better term would be "self serving". When reached for comment, Apple told iMore:…
