It’s one thing if an online ad is misleading or misrepresents the site that you click on, but what happens when you order an item that isn’t as promised? As overseas clothing companies that market solely through Facebook have proliferated, some customers blame Facebook, even though the site doesn’t vet the products and services of every advertiser. Now, at least, Facebook wants to listen if you’re scammed or misled by an ad on the site. Facebook agreed to look into this after a Buzzfeed investigation into shady clothing peddlers in China that market on social media. The story exposed companies with a truly alarming number of complaints filed elsewhere on the Internet, …

Microsoft and its millions of Windows Insiders have been testing the Redstone 1 development branch version of Windows 10 since December of last year. In that time frame there have been over 35 builds released to those testers to evaluate the second major update of Windows 10, commonly referred to as the Anniversary Update, for both PCs and Mobile devices. Since it has been called the Anniversary Update it was expected that it would arrive on the anniversary date of the initial release of Windows 10 which happened on 29 July 2015. However, it would appear that a partial press release was accidentally pushed out on the Microsoft News Center earlier today that just …

Microsoft started aggressively pushing its Windows 10 upgrade notifications back in February. While more than 300 million machines are now running the OS, some people haven't been particularly happy with how they received the upgrade. Microsoft is paying out $10,000 to a woman in Seattle who claims that Windows 10 installed itself on her work computer without her permission. Microsoft's initial upgrade prompts for Windows 10 were relatively clear, but in recent months the company tweaked its prompt so that if you simply dismissed it using the "Red X" the upgrade would schedule itself anyway. "Since we introduced a new upgrade experience for Windows 10, we've received f…

For months, we’ve cataloged continued user resistance to Microsoft’s Windows 10 upgrade policies, the company’s increasing attempts to shove users to adopt the OS, and its occasional backtrack when its own policies went too far. It seems that at least one customer took the fight to court and won a small judgment against the company for how it deployed its latest operating system. The Seattle Times reports that Teri Goldstein, of Sausalito, California, sued Microsoft after a failed Windows 10 upgrade left her system performing poorly, prone to crashing, and reportedly unusable for multiple days. Given the general issues associated with performing in-place upgrades, even…

I had the chance this weekend to personally walk through the garage before the race and see the use of Microsoft technologies helping speed up and improve the pre-race inspection of the cars. In addition, the use of new race management techniques built on Azure and Windows was truly inspiring. It’s gratifying to see Microsoft technology front and center helping NASCAR to make sure conditions are safe, competition on the track is fair and their team is using the power of data to provide even more thrilling fan experiences. The partnership and outcomes could not be stronger it highlights the best of digital transformation in action! Steve talks with Jeff Gordon, four-t…

Nearly two years after Consumerist reader Robert shut down his business-tier service with Comcast, he’s still fighting with the nation’s largest broadband provider over a $1,775 early termination fee that should not have been assessed. Comcast even admits the money shouldn’t have been debited from Robert’s bank account, but now says it’s his responsibility to sort the mess out with his bank. Robert tells Consumerist he first signed on with Comcast for his small business in early 2011, agreeing to a two-year contract, which came and went in 2013 without any ceremony. In an effort to save money in 2014, Robert called to have their service level downgraded to a more af…

Tech support scams have been around for quite some time. As a result, it's no surprise these ruses are growing in number and sophistication. A tech support scam used to only consist of unknown fraudsters messing around with fake anti-virus alerts, or cold-calling potential victims pretending to be Microsoft and offering to help with a virus infection. Not anymore. Resellers of legitimate computer security software have been getting caught up in the scamming game. Not only that, but some scams are leveraging advanced techniques like computer lock screens to trick unsuspecting users. It would now appear scammers have added yet another tactic to get what the…

Apple fixes memory issue that led to RCE in AirPort routers Yesterday, Apple released new firmware versions for its AirPort router models, which fixed a remote code execution (RCE) flaw tracked as CVE-2015-7029 and reported to the company last year by security researcher Alexandre Helie. Apple says that "a remote attacker may be able to cause arbitrary code execution" and take over the device, based on the complexity of their attack code. CVE-2015-7029 is a memory corruption issue, which Apple says exists in the way the router parses DNS requests. Apple didn't mention if the problem is affecting inbound or outbound DNS traffic. Regardless, both exploitati…

Nemucod ransomware makes a comeback after security researchers cracked one of its earlier iterations The latest version of the Nemucod ransomware uses a combination of JavaScript and PHP code to infect users and encrypt their files. Nemucod first appeared in March 2015, and at its base, the malware is a simple dropper. Droppers, also called malware downloaders, infectors, or loaders, are simplistic malware families specialized in the "infection" process and nothing more. After this occurs, they then download more potent malware. For this article, when we say Nemucod, we are referring to a custom ransomware variant that researchers observed delivered via t…

This post was authored by Subhasish Bhattacharya, Program Manager, Windows Server Introduction: Active Directory integration with your private cloud Active Directory integration provides significant value for most of the private cloud deployments. However, for a subset of scenarios, it is desirable to be able to decouple your deployment from Active Directory. In prior Windows Server releases, we introduced a number of features to minimize the dependence of your private cloud on Active Directory. Some of these features include: Bootstrapping without Active Directory: Introduced in Windows Server 2012 and allows you to boot your private cloud without Active Direc…

Using a power efficient browser is one of the best ways to get more out of your PC or tablet – whether you’re checking email, shopping online, playing games, or watching movies. Today’s laptops and tablets last longer than ever, thanks to major advances in battery technology, processor architecture, and software design. Still, no battery lasts forever, and every extra hour counts when you’re on the go. We designed Microsoft Edge from the ground up to prioritize power efficiency and deliver more battery life, without any special battery saving mode or changes to the default settings. Our testing and data show that you can simply browse longer with Microsoft Edge than wi…

Security failures at online services don't come much bigger than the issue Acer has just owned up to. In a letter to customers of its online store, the Taiwanese PC maker admits it has found "unauthorized access by a third party to [information] potentially including your name, address, card number, expiration date and three-digit security codes." That's all anyone needs to be able to make remote purchases, whether on the web or by phone, and it marks a particularly bad lapse in Acer's data safeguards. Affected customers are those who bought anything from Acer's North American web store between May 12th of last year and April 28th this year, and all will be receiving t…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjrxOOfi54k If you're a regular user of Google's Chrome browser then you're probably aware of the effect it has on your laptop battery life. Google has previously promised to improve battery life with Chrome, but most of the quick fixes haven't made a big difference yet. Microsoft has been busy conducting its own series of battery test experiments in the meantime, to prove what we already know: Chrome drains your battery. Microsoft has created two tests to measure the power consumption by browsers. The first is a test in a lab-controlled environment measuring typical browsing behavior on popular sites, while the second experiment time…
