  5. Earlier this year, reports first began to appear that a historic data breach at Dropbox may have exposed tens of millions of user passwords, after a file claiming to contain approximately 100 million Dropbox account details was made available for anyone to download. At the time, security commentators such as Brian Krebs, Troy Hunt and myself urged internet users to be wary of the claims - as they had not been verified. After all, it seemed possible that the data had been collected from heavily-reported mega breaches at Tumblr, LinkedIn and MySpace. Now, however, Dropbox has confirmed to the media that a 5GB archive of files, containing the email addresses and…

  6. In the few markets where it exists — however sparingly — Google Fiber has managed to provide enough of a threat of competition that the nation’s biggest cable/telecom providers have been willing to cut prices and/or improve service. But a number of recent developments, including a report that the Fiber staff is being significantly downsized, have some questioning the future of the service. Last week, The Information reported that Larry Page, CEO of Google parent company Alphabet, had ordered the head of Fiber to cut the staff in half, to around 500 people. Google isn’t talking about that story, but a source familiar with the situation tells Consumerist that the repo…

  8. A new attack called FaireWare Ransomware is targeting Linux users where the attackers hack a Linux server, delete the web folder, and then demand a ransom payment of two bitcoins to get their files back. In this attack, the attackers most likely do not encrypt the files, and if they do retain the files, probably just upload it to a server under their control. Victims have reported that they first learned about this attack when they discovered their web sites were down. When they logged into their Linux servers, they discovered that the web site folder had been removed and a note called READ_ME.txt was left in the /root/ folder. This note contains a link to a fu…

  11. Amazon is the biggest online retailer in the US, but it's also not without problems. One of the ways Amazon became so big was by opening up its distribution network to third-party retailers, who use Amazon's warehouses and website to sell their own products. Buying from these retailers means you're not buying from Amazon proper, and that means you can be burned. How-To Geek has the story of how one author got scammed by a mini PC with a cracked version of Windows. When you're paying good money for a computer off a giant website, it shouldn't arrive with pirated software. And yet: The particular PC I purchased was sold by “MarsKing“. Sure, that’s a Chinese man…

  12. Ransomware found being delivered as Windows critical update Ransomware often tries to disguise its malicious behavior by various tricks. The latest method observed is from a new variant called Fantom, which shows a fake Windows Update screen, while in reality, it's encrypting the user's files. The ransomware, spotted for the first time only a few days ago by AVG security researcher Jakub Kroustek, is coded on top of EDA2, a ransomware building kit that was open-sourced last year, but eventually taken down. EDA2 contained flaws that allowed researchers to obtain the decryption keys from the ransomware's C&C server. According to analysis from Bleeping Com…

  14. Victims can recover files for free without paying the ransom Malware analysts from PhishLabs have released a decrypter for a newly spotted ransomware family called Alma Locker. Discovered by Proofpoint researcher Darien Huss, and first analyzed by Lawrence Abrams, Alma Locker is more advanced than all the other recent ransomware variants released in the past month, who've been more like "testing" versions, and not full-on threats. As a testament to Alma Locker's more advanced state of development, the crooks behind this malware have already moved to a mass distribution stage using the RIG exploit kit. It is unknown how crooks are sending hijacked traffic t…

  17. The hardware specifications for the Windows operating system lay out the minimum requirements to install and run the OS. Of course, many of us have likely installed Windows on a system that was under the published specs but still found that it would operate on that hardware. I even installed Windows 10 on an early Windows Vista era laptop and it did run on it - just not great. So here are the published minimum specs for the Windows 10 Anniversary Update - Version 1607 - that was just released on 02 August 2016. CPU 1GHz processor or SoC (System on a Chip) RAM 2GB for either 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 10; 1GB for 32-bit or 64-bit OS upgrade …

  19. If you’re the unofficial “tech support” for your family, a new feature hidden deep within Windows 10’s Anniversary Update should be welcome news. It’s called Quick Assist. Anyone who works in the computer industry, or has a reputation for being technologically savvy, knows the sinking feeling that accompanies these words: “So I bought a new computer.” Those six words inevitably mean you’re going to end up on a long telephone call trying to explain something like how to save a web document as a PDF, with each participant becoming more frustrated by the minute. Wouldn’t you just like to perform the task for them and be done with it? Quick Assist makes that possible—…

  20. Here’s the latest in a growing list of post-AU update complaints. In addition to reports of AU killing digital cameras worldwide, apparently if you simply plug your Kindle eReader (Paperwhite, Voyage - doesn’t matter which edition) into a USB port, Windows 10 with the Anniversary Update will crash and bluescreen. The problem was first reported shortly after AU started delivering, but even more recent reports show that the issue is ongoing. I’m reaching out today about this problem and will keep you apprised, but it reminds me of that old joke: Patient: “Doc, when I hold my arm this way it hurts.” Doc: “Don’t hold your arm that way.” Source: winsupersite

  23. reworked its code to circumvent ad-blockers, couching it to users as an educational move. Because they give you tools to manage your experience (within their boundaries), Facebook said, you wouldn’t need your pesky little ad-blocker anymore! Ad-blocking companies responded swiftly and predictably: within 48 hours, they announced a work-around and had it up and ready for users to implement. And so the arms race continues. Of course, the game of cat-and-mouse coding can (and probably will) continue infinitely. So the biggest tool in Facebook’s toolbox is this: to make you not want to block their ads at all. And to that end, they’re continuing their campaign of relentl…

  24. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has slammed Microsoft for its "blatant disregard" for user privacy with Windows 10 and has called on the company to formally acknowledge that its update program was flawed. In a damning editorial published on 17 August, EFF staff member Amul Kalia blasts Microsoft for misguiding users as part of its attempt to push Windows 10 to machines and calls attention to the "unprecedented" volume of user data it collects. This includes location data, text input, voice input, touch input, webpages visited and telemetry data regarding how customers use their computer. Kalia claims Microsoft gathers this information without giving users the …

And now, with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, you can talk to Cortana on your PC’s lock screen. Here’s how to use Cortana above your lock screen: Start by saying “Hey Cortana,” and ask her what the weather …
