by Guest Gwen Houston- 0 replies

Earlier today, we released our latest workforce demographic numbers on our Global Diversity & Inclusion website. I encourage anyone with an interest in diversity at Microsoft – as well as anyone interested in diversity within the tech industry as a whole – to visit this website and familiarize themselves with our latest information. As I look at our numbers, I see a story that to some degree is being repeated throughout the industry. While certain leading indicators are trending up and we are starting to see signs of progress, systemic challenges remain when it comes to increasing the presence of women and minorities at all levels of the workforce. The implications…

Half of all organizations will have commenced their Windows 10 rollout by January 2017, putting it on track to be the most widely installed version of Windows ever, according to Gartner. The analyst group pointed to several factors that are driving faster adoption of Windows 10 for business: the end of support for Windows 7 in January 2020; good compatibility with existing Windows 7 applications and devices; and a pent-up demand for tablet and 2-in-1 device rollouts. "For businesses, we expect that implementation will be significantly more rapid than that seen with Windows 7 six years ago," said Steve Kleynhans, research vice president at Gartner. More business…

Designing Windows Server in the cloud-first world
by Guest Microsoft Windows Server- 0 replies

This post was authored by Jeffrey Snover, Microsoft Technical Fellow “There is an unlimited demand for computing.” That is what Buck Rodgers said in his great 1988 book The IBM Way. Buck connected the dots between computing and growing a business. While Buck had the right idea, the reality is that this gets held back by friction. In the past, friction took the form of cost – servers were expensive. But since then, servers have grown in capacity and shrunk in cost to the point where today they are downright cheap. Virtual servers are even cheaper and with cloud servers, you only pay when you use them. However, demand for computing is still being held back by fricti…

Enterprise security for our mobile-first, cloud-first world
by Guest Bret Arsenault- 0 replies

Today, I was able to join Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in Washington, D.C., where he delivered a keynote that highlighted the need for a new approach to security. He shared how Microsoft uses its unique insight into the threat landscape to help better protect customers, and showcased how Microsoft technologies work in tandem with each other, and with solutions from the security ecosystem, to deliver a holistic, agile, security platform for today’s enterprise. New approach In our mobile-first, cloud-first world, employees work on corporate applications and access sensitive data from on-premises and cloud-based systems using every type of device from laptops to BYO de…

CDT (Center for Democracy & Technology) has alerted the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) about the existence of a privacy-intrusive, hidden high-frequency audio cross-device tracking technology. According to an official complaint filed by the CDT, the privacy watchdog is tattling on advertisers like SilverPush, Drawbridge, and Flurry, online companies that deploy ads that squeal high-frequency sounds from the devices they're loaded on. The CDT says that these ultrasonic sounds scan the room for other devices like phones, tablets, TVs, computers, and wearables, effectively tying their presence to a browser cookie, an IP, and indirectly a user. Whenever the devic…

Getting rid of your Android smartphone or tablet, but want to make sure that all your data has been securely deleted. Here's how you go about the task. Backup all your data; because once it's gone, it's gone. There's no undo button you can press. Next, plug the charger into the device so it's getting power for the deletion process. This is important because the process can take hours. Go to Settings >> Security >> Encrypt phone (or Encrypt tablet) to begin the process on Android 4.4 or lower, or go Settings >> Security >> Screen lock to begin the process on Android 5.0 and higher (this is unnecessary on new devices running Android 6.0 Marshma…

Welcome back to Weekend Reading! The past seven days were particularly rich with good stories, especially ones that inspire what’s known in Internet speak as “all the feels.” On Veterans Day, America’s annual celebration of those who have served in the armed forces, Microsoft created a heartwarming and inspiring slideshow. It featured former service members who currently work at the company talking about how their military service helped them become the people they are today. The slideshow was created to honor those employees, but also in the hopes that even more service members will consider spending the next stages of their career at Microsoft. Meanwhile, Skype in…

Soccer, or rather football aficionados in the UK may have had their computers infected whilst browsing the Premier League’s official fantasy website fantasy.premierleague.com. A malicious advert displayed on the sports portal which draws in over 16 million visitors per month according to SimilarWeb automatically redirected unsuspecting soccer fans to the Nuclear exploit kit. The Flash-based ad for a British yacht company was hosted on a highly suspicious server and distributed over https, making detection at the firewall or gateway much more difficult because it would encrypt the content of the page. The malvertising chain is familiar as it makes use of goo.gl UR…

Microsoft's first major Windows 10 update debuted yesterday with some new features and changes. Most of the additions are obvious, but there are a few hidden away. Here are several Windows 10 features you might not have discovered yet. Find my device You're probably used to using a find my device feature on your phone, but what happens if you lose your laptop? In most versions of Windows you'd have to settle for a third-party app to trust and track your laptop's location, but Microsoft has decided to add this functionality straight into Windows 10. Just like the mobile equivalent, you can enable find my device and it will track the last known location of your laptop…

In the cloud we trust

Jan. 21, 2015 was an interesting day. It was the day Microsoft invited a small group of tech journalists to its Redmond, Washington, headquarters for a big announcement. In the past, news this momentous might have been accompanied by a famous rock band or fireworks, but when Microsoft unveiled Windows 10 and HoloLens, they were in an intimate, coffeehouse-style room sipping coffee with house music playing in the background. Elsewhere the world, Jan. 21 was an altogether different kind of day. As the sun rose over Sao Paolo, it promised to be a beautiful day – a day like any other. And then the police arrived at the apartment of a Microsoft executive in Brazil, burst…
