Today I’m pleased to announce that Microsoft has acquired Metanautix, an innovative company that is helping solve one of the biggest challenges in the world of data analytics: How can a company bring all of its data together for analytics to gain powerful insights, discover new opportunities and drive growth through intelligent automation? Companies continue to generate enormous volumes of information and aspire to be more data-driven in their strategies and operations. Metanautix’ technology breaks these boundaries to conn…

Bing is here to help by giving voters more information about candidates and the voting process through its comprehensive election experience. Now more than e…

Social engineering drives macro malware levels to six-year highs. “Warning: This document contains macros.” A familiar message from the 1990s is back, as attackers find new ways to get people to open documents containing macro malware. This updated threat is targeted at users in large organizations that frequently use macros. Carefully crafted and socially engineered emails entice users to open seemingly legitimate documents and then enable the macro. According to the latest McAfee Labs Threats Report, incidents of malicious macros have increased by a factor of four in the last year. The most popular macro malware targets are Microsoft Office documents, especially W…

By installing flaw-ridden apps, computer makers are punching security holes in new PCs. Just when you thought you couldn't hate "bloatware" any more than you already did, it gets worse. Last week, a security researcher discovered three separate flaws in Dell, Lenovo, and Toshiba software that comes preinstalled on new PCs and laptops. The proof-of-concept code was published online, potentially putting millions of PC users at risk of attack, and catching the PC makers off guard. The researcher's concluding words? "Preinstalled crapware is bad." It was a tough lesson in software security, one that wouldn't have needed teaching had the companies not bundled…

Current TeslaCrypt ransomware can't be decrypted In the past few days, a new version of the TeslaCrypt ransomware was released, and security researchers have now detected a massive spam campaign distributing this new threat. The first signs of something out of the ordinary were initially spotted on the Bleeping Computer forums, where users started complaining about being infected with ransomware. After further analysis by community members, the ransomware proved to be a new TeslaCrypt version that added minor changes to its code, but these were more than enough to prevent users from using the TeslaDecoder to decrypt their files. While we believe there is…
