Deploy a cloud application quickly with the new Microsoft SDN stack You might have seen this blog post recently published on common data center challenges. In that article, Ravi talked about the challenges surrounding deployment, flexibility, resiliency, and security, and how our Software Defined Networking (SDN) helps you solves those challenges. In this blog post series we will go deeper so you’ll know how you can use Microsoft SDN with Hyper-V to deploy a classic application network topology. Think about how long it takes you to deploy a three-tier web application in your current infrastructure. Ok, do you have a figure for it? How long, and how many other people…

A lot of PC users are going to see Windows 10 suddenly appear on their machines this week. Windows 10 has been changed to a ‘recommended’ upgrade - from an optional one. If your Windows 7 or 8 machine is set to automatically install recommended items (the default setting), it will download several gigabytes of data. Microsoft says that users still have the choice of whether to upgrade, according to a report in The Register. Microsoft said in a statement, ‘As we shared in late October on the Windows Blog, we are committed to making it easy for our Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 customers to upgrade to Windows 10. Windows 10: The 10 things you need…

I have been using Microsoft Edge as my default web browser since Windows 10 arrived last July however, since it is in the very early stages of development I have used IE11 a lot and also kept Firefox and Chrome on my system for backup. Early on Microsoft Edge has shown itself to be very fast and it has gained new features regularly over the last six months. I no longer find the need to leave Edge for another browser as much as I did in those early days. Microsoft Edge is also more than the UI we see on our Windows 10 devices as well and the Edge team has continued working on those internals to build a solid base for the new browser. What is missing from the UI a…

Developers: Check out the Nano Server installation option in Windows Server 2016
by Guest Microsoft Windows Server- 0 replies

As organizations move toward modern DevOps practices, the role of the operating system needs to evolve to support both the “Dev” and the “Ops” part of the equation. In November we released Technical Preview 4 of Windows Server 2016, including updates for Nano Server, the new headless deployment option. Nano Server loads only the base OS roles, resulting in a footprint up to 20x smaller than Windows Server with Desktop Experience. For IT Pros, this translates into a smaller attack surface, fewer updates and reboots, and increased server density…all great for running and managing an efficient, secure datacenter. Today let’s focus on why Nano Server is great for deve…

Designing Windows Server in the cloud-first world
by Guest Microsoft Windows Server- 0 replies

This post was authored by Jeffrey Snover, Microsoft Technical Fellow “There is an unlimited demand for computing.” That is what Buck Rodgers said in his great 1988 book The IBM Way. Buck connected the dots between computing and growing a business. While Buck had the right idea, the reality is that this gets held back by friction. In the past, friction took the form of cost – servers were expensive. But since then, servers have grown in capacity and shrunk in cost to the point where today they are downright cheap. Virtual servers are even cheaper and with cloud servers, you only pay when you use them. However, demand for computing is still being held back by frictio…

Landscape shifts that affect the way we think about security Looking at the datacenter and cloud through security lenses, there are two major aspects th…

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14257
by Guest Gabe Aul- 0 replies
Hi everyone, Today, we are releasing Build 14257 Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. As I mentioned last week, we’re at the beginning of a new development cycle for our next feature update to Windows 10. Teams are still early in their new feature work and changes in this build are mostly about laying the foundation for those features to start coming into builds. So you won’t see many visible changes quite yet. Also, the increased pace of the Fast ring (You’ll note that this build is only 6 revs newer than the last build we sent to the Fast ring) means that there will be fewer big changes between builds as opposed to this time last year when builds were about 30 days …

After testing its gigabit internet service with one user in Philadelphia back in December, Comcast is nearly ready to rollout the service on a much wider scale. Comcast will make the 1Gbps service available in Nashville and Atlanta early this year, with Chicago, Detroit, and Miami to follow later in 2016. Customers won't need to pay hefty installation fees for the service. This matches the rollout plan Comcast used for its $300 a month 2Gbps Gigabit Pro service, which is now available in 18 million homes, according to the company. The biggest difference between the two offerings — besides the speed — is customers won't need to pay hefty installation fees (up to $1,0…

Google has fixed a critical bug in Android that can be remotely exploited by an email, MMS, or link to a webpage that contains a specially-crafted media file. Of the seven critical security vulnerabilities in Google's February patch for Android Nexus devices, the fix for the most serious flaws affects the mediaserver service in the OS. This service contained two flaws exposing devices to remote execution when the mediaserver processes a purpose-built file delivered by email, MMS, or a webpage. The flaws affect Android 6.0, Android 5.1 Lollipop, and Android 4.4.4 KitKat. Google notes that one mitigation is that its Google Hangouts and Messenger apps no longer a…

When your laptop or your smartphone gets hot, you know it's crunching a lot of data. So you can imagine the amount of heat generated by the racks upon racks of servers that store and process the world's digital lives. Keeping these data centers cool is such a problem that tech companies like Facebook and Google prefer to move them to colder countries than pay the air conditioning bill. But for Microsoft, there's an even better home for all that data: under the sea. Microsoft's prototype server ran for 105 days This morning, Microsoft unveiled Project Natick — an ongoing research project into subsea data centers that could be both cost effective and environmentally…

A burger and some chili or a baked potato seems like a great meal idea in this miserably snowy winter weather so many of us are having. Unfortunately, reports are saying that if you bought that tasty treat from Wendy’s with a credit or debit card recently, it may come with an unwanted side of fraud. The news comes from security expert Brian Krebs, who in recent years first broke the news of the Target and Home Depot breaches, among dozens of other smaller ones. Krebs reports that his sources inside the banking industry have seen a new pattern emerging in recently defrauded credit and debit cards. The similarity? All of them were recently used to buy something at…
