FTC sues AT&T over unlimited data throttling
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
The Federal Trade Commission is suing AT&T Mobility over data throttling on unlimited data plans. The Commission alleges that AT&T's practices regarding unlimited data were deceptive and unfair. The FTC believes that AT&T in some cases reduced unlimited data speeds after certain amounts by up to 90 percent. The FTC's guiding principle is "unlimited means unlimited". This means that if a carrier offers you unlimited data, they shouldn't be able to throttle you if you exceed a certain amount of usage. The Commission points to AT&T's marketing materials, which heavily emphasize unlimited data. It is alleged that AT&T began throttling data back in …

Billguard's card locations tell you when your card is used away from your phone
by Guest Richard Devine- 0 replies
Billguard, the mobile app that helps protect you and your credit cards, is today announcing an interesting new feature for iPhone users in the U.S. Card Location Alerts is a new feature they're rolling out that ties your phone's location data to your card usage. If your credit card is used and its not at the same location as your smartphone, you'll get an unexpected location alert. You have to opt in to the service, so the choice on whether to use the location data from your phone is entirely yours. But once opted in, Billguard will monitor your location data to try and match against where your card has been used. If it thinks that something fishy is going on, and it…

by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
ContactSaver is a new app for your iPhone that can automatically create new contacts for you. The app connects to your work or personal Gmail accounts. ContactSaver requires a free account with their parent company CircleBack in order to get started. ContactSaver looks at your email for contact details. When it spots new contact information, the app will alert you. You can then choose to save the new information to your Gmail address book, or ignore it. ContactSaver will keep a running count of the number of contacts saved. If new information about an existing contact is found, only that new information will be added to your address book. ContactSaver is a free ap…

The new Taco Bell app will let you order a Doritos Cheesy Gordita Crunch on-the-go
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies
Taco Bell has released a new app that enables iPhone users to place an order for tacos from afar, and then come to the store to pick them up. The app is now focused on the menu and ordering, allowing users to select and customize their menu items (even including a drink selection where applicable), find restaurants, and add them to their order. You can even remotely pay with a saved credit card, debit card, or Taco Bell gift card. Select a Taco Bell restaurant and when you get there, the staff will start building your order. Yeah, it's not as convenient as some "show up and it's ready" restaurant remote ordering apps are, but Taco Bell's never exactly been a slow-ser…

Since it was announced by Microsoft last month, Windows 10 has become the latest buzz on the internet. So let’s face it, because Windows 8 - even after evolving into Windows 8.1 - wasn’t quite appealing. While there are in fact many legitimate reasons to explain why Windows 8 is a failure, the most important one was apparently the absence of the Start button, which has been the heart and soul of all Windows operation systems since the very first day. Back when Windows 8 was launched, everybody was complaining about the absence of the Start button. And since the UI changed entirely, the learning curve was very steep, to the extent that many users did not even know how t…

Building your first PC can be an overwhelming experience—there are just so many different components to choose from. ChooseMyPC gives you a starting point by asking a few questions, along with your budget. ChooseMyPC is pretty straightforward: give it your budget, answer a few small questions, and it'll give you a sample PC build. You can hover over each component to see why it chose that one, edit certain components (like hard drives), or remove ones you want to choose yourself (like the case). It'll even give you a link to your build on PCPartPicker. Of course, the beauty of building your own PC is choosing parts that perfectly fit your needs. I don't recommend us…

iPad mini 3 review
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
The iPad mini didn't get the same update as its bigger brother, iPad Air this year. There’s no laminated display with antiglare coating, and there’s no monstrous Apple A8X chipset. Internally, that which the iPad mini 2 had, the iPad mini 3 mirrors. So what do you get with Apple's newest version of its smallest iPad? A 7.9-inch high-resolution window into the internet and apps, made even more convenient thanks to the addition of Touch ID and Apple Pay, a slightly-more-fashionable model thanks to an optional gold finish, and more affordable pricing thanks to a reduction in price for the 64GB and 128GB models. It’s still supremely portable, and powerful enough for almost…

Apple reportedly looking to use iPhone NFC for keycards, transit tickets
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

Apple is reportedly looking into uses for NFC beyond Apple Pay. Apple is apparently looking into expanding the utility of the NFC found in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus into areas like keycards and transit tickets. They are also supposedly in early talks with some companies. According to The Information The Apple representatives have talked to technology providers like HID Global and Cubic, which enable secure access to buildings and transit fare systems, respectively, said people briefed on the discussions. Spokespeople for the companies declined to comment about any discussions with Apple, but executives there discussed how they could integrate their systems with…

How to quickly link Apple Pay with your iTunes payment card
by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies

Apple Pay is a great new feature of iOS 8.1 and allows you to securely pay for purchases both online and for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, at many merchants who support NFC payments as well. To get started, you can use the default payment method you use for iTunes and App Store purchases, and it only takes a few taps! How to link your iTunes payment method to Apple Pay in just a few taps Launch the Passbook app on your iPhone or iPad that's compatible with Apple Pay. Pull down from the top of the screen to reveal the plus sign — tap on the plus sign. Tap on Set Up Apple Pay. Log in to your iCloud account when prompted. Tap on Use Card on File with iTunes. Verify…

What's on Derek's iPhone 6 right now!
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies

Hi, my name is Derek, I'm an iPhone 6 user. I've owned an iPhone 6 for a little over a month now. I use it a lot, more than I had previous iPhones. But nothings really changed since I started using the the iPhone 6. I'm still meticulous about how I organize things on the home screen… even with Spotlight search and Siri to launch things, I still want everything in its place. It is my iPhone, after all, I should have it set up the way I want it. But hey, with the 6 I can put more apps on the home screen, so there's that. Wallpaper: I recently switched back to the hyper-colorful wallpaper I produced based off of the WWDC 2013 invite. The Dock These are, han…

Screenshots showing Microsoft's Outlook 16 for OS X reportedly leaked
by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies
Screenshots that allegedly show what Microsoft's next major version of Outlook might look like with OS X have made their way onto the Internet, showing off some moderate user interface changes. The screenshots do show a flatter design for icons that have been seen in Microsoft's recent preview builds of Windows 10. If these images are accurate, we can expect similar changes for all of programs in the Microsoft Office suite. Microsoft is said to be close to launching a public preview of the next version of Office, code named "Office 16", with a plan to release the final version sometime in 2015. It's currently unknown if the Windows and Mac versions of the software…

If you're running iOS 8.1 on your iPhone or iPad and have OS X Yosemite on your Mac, you can now use your cellular connection for a new feature called Instant Hotspot. However, some people have been experiencing connection issues or can't get the feature working at all. Here are some steps you can try in order to get Instant Hotspot working correctly! Before beginning, remember that you must be running OS X Yosemite on your Mac and iOS 8.1 or newer on your iOS devices in order for Instant Hotspot to work. 1. Ensure your device is compatible wit…

T-Mobile CEO John Legere takes to Twitter to help clear up Apple SIM confusion
by Guest Rich Edmonds- 0 replies
T-Mobile CEO John Legere has taken to Twitter to explain how the recently announced Apple SIM works in the new iPad Mini 3 and iPad Air 2, highlighting how competitors continue to make it difficult for customers to switch operators. The Apple SIM replaces the traditional SIM consumers would normally receive from their mobile carrier, providing the ability to easily switch between networks without having to grab a new card and set everything up. It's designed to make your life easier, if carriers play along. Unfortunately, while US networks support the new SIM (except Verizon), not all is well. 4/ @verizonwireless chose not to play at all….Not even on the Ap…

Don't want retailers shutting down NFC? Tell them with your Apple Pay-powered wallet!
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Apple Pay launched last week. In store, it's a secure way to pay for items using existing NFC technology, authorized by Touch ID fingerprint technology. It in no way precludes the use of other NFC-enabled payment systems, including credit and debit cards, or other platforms or apps. It's easy to use, lightning fast, and extremely customer friendly. It's also private, not releasing transactional information beyond what the retailer needs to process the payment. So, CVS and Rite Aid are both going so far as to disable NFC support in general just to make sure no one tries to use Apple Pay in their stores. Yes, they'd rather hobble their transactional systems entirely than le…

Retina iMac vs. Mac Pro: Which Mac powerhouse should you get?
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
Apple's introduction of the Retina iMac marks the first time that a desktop Macintosh has gotten the "Retina" treatment, and it's nothing short of stunning, capable of displaying 5K resolution. With that many pixels on the screen and with prodigious power under the hood, you may be wondering whether the Retina iMac or a new Mac Pro is a better choice. Let's have a look. Comparing Macs: Retina iMac vs. Mac Pro Apple's newest iMac model, the $2,499 Retina iMac comes in a familiar size: 27 inches. And when it's powered off, from all outward appearances it looks the same as other 27-inch iMacs. But inside it's different. First of all, there's the display: 5120 …

What's on Georgia's iPhone 6 Plus right now!
by Guest Georgia- 0 replies
Yes, I opted for the new iPhone 6 Plus because I've always wanted a bigger screen. A much bigger screen. And now I have it. For gaming, for watching videos, for surfing the web, it's just so much better that I'm willing to sacrifice the ability to easily type one handed. And yes, my Home screen is still pretty much default — I'm lazy! — so I'm including some of my favorite apps from my second screen as well. And yes, I still don't update applications very often. I don't like change. I don't like learning new interfaces, and I don't like that I can't go back to a older version of an app if anything goes wrong. It's my iPhone after all, and I get to use and abuse it just th…

NSFW: Shut up about the new Mac mini, already
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies

NSFW is a weekly op-ed column in which I talk about whatever's on my mind. Sometimes it'll have something to do with the technology we cover here on iMore; sometimes it'll be whatever pops into my head. Your questions, comments and observations are welcome. I've seen endless bitching in blogs and social media about the new Mac mini Apple unveiled last week. So much so that I've seen some people recommending that you forget about the new Mac mini all together and get the older model if you can find it. That's incredibly stupid, because it ignores the actual needs of a lot of people who buy these things. Let me explain. Some of the complainers are put off by the fac…
