Hi everyone, Today, we are releasing Build 14267 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. Just to quickly recap the changes we’ve made to rings for Insiders in 2016: We introduced the new Release Preview ring last week which is for Windows Insiders who want to stay on the Current Branch (currently builds based off of Build 10586), but continue to receive early access to updates, application updates, and driver updates. This is a great option for people who want to get updates early but not go all the way to installing full preview builds. Because the Release Preview ring offers updates to the Current Branch, it is only visible to devices on the Current Branch (Buil…

Researchers have spotted some new ransomware that comes with a Live Chat feature and a somewhat useless uninstaller program. First detected by the folks at the abuse.ch security blog, the ransomware dubbed "PadCrypt," is being spread via spam email campaigns, explains Lawrence Abrams of Bleeping Computer. Each email comes with a .ZIP attachment that contains an executable file with the double extension of .pdf.scr. The use of a double extension is a deliberate attempt by attackers to fool users into believing that the file might be a legitimate PDF file, but when executed the file downloads the PadCrypt ransomware onto a victim's machine. At that point in time…

In retail archaeology, it’s exciting when an excavation turns up a new type of artifact that has never been studied before. Reader Paris is one of Consumerist’s Raiders of the Lost Walmart, the brave explorers who hunt down retail antiquities in the world’s big-box stores. He found something that we had never seen before: another variety of decade-old MP3 player with a comically high price tag and free downloads from the Walmart Music Store, which shut down in 2008. Just like our favorite ancient MP3 player, the MobiBLU, the Siren was probably released around 2006. Both came out when Walmart was trying to promote its own MP3 download store. Back in late 2008, the s…

When it comes to visual aesthetics, Windows 10 is reasonably configurable—but not as configurable as I’d like. For instance, I can’t find a way to replicate Windows 7’s rounded window corners. (If you found one, please add it to the comments section below.) But you can still do a lot to make Windows 10 look better. Let’s start with some basic changes: Select Start > Settings > Personalization. In the default Background tab, you can select the desktop background (I still prefer the old name, wallpaper). You can choose a picture (one of theirs or one of your own), a solid color, or a slideshow made up of various pictures. (If you select Slideshow, you’ll be as…

A fresh strain of mobile malware has been discovered which is able to root devices, hijack sessions and completely wipe system data. Android-based mobile malware which is able to give itself admin privileges and completely take over aspects of a smartphone's functionality has been discovered in the wild, researchers say. According to security specialist Andra Zaharia from Heimdal Security, the malware, dubbed Mazar Android BOT, spreads via SMS and MMS messages. Crafted with a malicious link, the message reads: This message links to an Android application package (APK). The user is then prompted to download the package, which is given a generic name -- "MMS…

In recent days, some Gmail users have been wondering and worrying about new emails popping up in their inboxes with a new unlocked icon. Have no fear. As we mentioned on Tuesday, this is just Google's way of telling you that an email you've received isn't as secure as it should be. SEE ALSO: Google offers 2GB of free storage, adds Gmail encryption updates Emails that have not been authenticated by TLS encryption (transport layer security) will show this red unlocked icon, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the sender is an evil spammer sneaking into your inbox. Image: gmail screenshot What TLS encryption does is protect the security of email messages…

Eleven-year-old composer Garrett Weyenberg, right, and StaffPad creator David William Hearn. Photo by David Palmer. There was a lot to love this week at Microsoft, timely with Valentine’s Day on Sunday. We watched an amazing 11-year-old composer from McKinney, Texas, who now has an easier way to notate his award-winning creations, thanks to an app especially designed for Surface. We learned that Sir Paul McCartney created an exclusive set of love-inspired musical creations for Mojis on Skype. We saw how Kinect is being used to help quantify whether multiple sclerosis patients’ symptoms are stabilizing or getting worse. And we met some of the generous Microsoft employ…

This is the year. It’s the year you’ll wake up on Feb. 15 without the stinging sensation of intense regret that inevitably follows after mourning Valentine’s Day at the bottom of a booze bottle, covered in bits of melted chocolate stuck to you in your sleep, because your beloved turned out to be a scammer. Because this year, you’re going to be prepared for any romance scams that may come your way. While scams that prey on the tender-hearted can pop up at any time of year, Valentine’s Day is a big event for scammers, who know some folks are even more susceptible to take the romantic bait. Netflix users are also targeted with phishing scams Sample Netflix phising email delivered to Danish users Along with its expansion to more countries, Netflix has become even more attractive to malware operations, who have not shied away from taking advantage of the company's users. According to Symantec researchers, Netflix users are targeted by a new malware campaign that advertises itself as a cheaper method of accessing and watching movies on Netflix. Netflix apps laced with infostealers This campaign is unique as compared to most malware operations because it doesn't rely on spam email, but actually on ads that redirect interested users to a direct d…

Security researchers from F-Secure have uncovered a brief malvertising campaign that has hit Skype users, in what seems to have been an accidental infection. Malvertising is the operation of delivering advertising laced with malicious JavaScript code that hijacks the user's browsing experience and takes them to a rogue Web page, where attackers employ automated software called exploit kits to scan the system for vulnerabilities and abuse them to infect the user's PC with malware. Theoretically, malvertising works in all mediums where ads can be shown. In practice, malvertising is only effective in browsers, since exploit kits are often configured to exploit browse…

Identity thieves attempted to breach computer systems at the Internal Revenue Service to file fraudulent tax refunds. The criminals were especially after E-file PINs, which are used by some individuals to electronically file a return, the agency said in a statement released Tuesday. Around 464,000 unique social security numbers were involved, and of that total, 101,000 SSNs were used to successfully access an E-file PIN. The thieves used personal taxpayer data that was stolen elsewhere to help generate the PINs, the agency said. No personal data was compromised or disclosed by IRS systems, and affected taxpayers will be notified by mail of the attack. “The IRS is al…

Windows 7 is more than six years old. Most of the cheap upgrade offers that were available when it was fresh and new are long gone. But if you prefer the familiar Windows 7 interface (or need it for testing and evaluation) you can still find great deals. Here are all the details you need. Windows 7 is officially middle-aged. It was publicly released more than six years ago, on October 22, 2009. With each passing day it is getting further and further from the midpoint of Microsoft's 10-year support lifecycle for Windows releases. In January 2015, Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 7, and the five-year extended support phase began. In January 2020, the Win…
