Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to be a key area of investment for Microsoft, and we’re pleased to announce that for the first time we’ve leveraged AI at scale to greatly improve the quality and reliability of the Windows 10 April 2018 Update rollout. Our AI approach intelligently selects devices that our feedback data indicate would have a great update experience and offers the April 2018 Update to these devices first. As our rollout progresses, we continuously collect update experience data and retrain our models to learn which devices will have a positive update experience, and where we may need to wait until we have higher confidence in a great experience. O…

The traditional perimeter-based network defense is obsolete. Perimeter-based networks operate on the assumption that all systems within a network can be trusted. However, todays increasingly mobile workforce, the migration towards public cloud services, and the adoption of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) model make perimeter security controls irrelevant. Networks that fail to evolve from traditional defenses are vulnerable to breaches: an attacker can compromise a single endpoint within the trusted boundary and then quickly expand foothold across the entire network. In 2013, a massive credit card data breach hit Target and exposed the credit card information of over 40 …

For an overview of these changes, check out this video by Jon Friedman, our Chief Designer for Office. Here are some highlights from their post: “Office is used by more than a billion people every month, so while we’re excited about these changes, we also recognize how important it is to get things right. These updates are exclusive to Office.com and Office 365 – the always up-to-date versions of our apps and services. But they won’t happen all at once. Instead, over the next several months we will deploy new designs to select customers in stages and carefully test and learn. We’ll move them into production only after they’ve made it through rigorous rounds o…

  12. Over the weekend, Microsoft announced that starting on July 1st 2018 they are no longer offering support for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and a wide variety of older applications in the Microsoft Community forums. This does not mean that volunteers will not be able to answer questions, only that Microsoft staff themselves will no longer respond to them. The announcement posted to the Microsoft Community forums states: As you can see all of the products mentioned are old with mainstream support already ended. Therefore, it does not come as a surprise to see Microsoft assigning their staff to responding to questions for newer products that are still under…

  16. Machine learning is a key driver in the constant evolution of security technologies at Microsoft. Machine learning allows Microsoft 365 to scale next-gen protection capabilities and enhance cloud-based, real-time blocking of new and unknown threats. Just in the last few months, machine learning has helped us to protect hundreds of thousands of customers against ransomware, banking Trojan, and coin miner malware outbreaks. But how does machine learning stack up against social engineering attacks? Social engineering gives cybercriminals a way to get into systems and slip through defenses. Security investments, including the integration of advanced threat protection se…

How to use it We have seen this document used for several purposes by our customers and internal teams (beyond a geeky wall decoration to shock and impress your cubicle neighbors). Starting template for a security architecture – The most common use case we see is that organizations use the document to help define a target state for cybersecurit…

Similar to the embedded devices that came before them, modern IoT devices are often used in places where physical servicing is difficult and expensive. For example, it’s expensive for an oil company to put a technician on a helicopter to service equipment on a platform at sea. As a result, commercial IoT devices need to be supported and in service for far longer than their consumer counterparts. Today at Computex 2018, we are excited to announce Windows 10 IoT Core Services. This offering will provide 10 years of support along with services to manage device updates and assess device health, enabling our IoT partners to create solutions to address their customers’ ne…

The escalating sophistication of cyberattacks is marked by the increased use of kernel-level exploits that attempt to run malware with the highest privileges and evade security solutions and software sandboxes. Kernel exploits famously gave the WannaCry and Petya ransomware remote code execution capability, resulting in widescale global outbreaks. Windows 10 remained resilient to these attacks, with Microsoft constantly raising the bar in platform security to stay ahead of threat actors. Virtualization-based security (VBS) hardens Windows 10 against attacks by using the Windows hypervisor to create an environment that isolates a secure region of memory known as secur…

  25. GDPR requirements are here and making waves--especially when it comes to artificial intelligence. If you've spent any time online, you've likely received several emails recently from online services outlining how personal data is collected, stored and used. These emails stem from implementation of the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is among the world’s toughest online privacy rules. U.S. companies are subject to GDPR compliance if they collect personal data from anyone in an EU country. The new regulations are designed to give Internet users more control over what is collected and shared about them. Organizations that don't meet the…
