What is the best way to test some of the protection related features on your Windows system like SmartScreen Filter and Windows Defender? One option, which we do not recommend because it is frankly very reckless, would be to just start browsing for malicious sites and waiting for one of them to try and drop a suspicious file on your system or serve up a phishing/malware laced site in your browser that wants to grab your information or infect your system. No - we definitely do not recommend doing something like that. However, there is great value in understanding how detection tools like the SmartScreen Filter works in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer and push…

A 14-year-old girl from Northern Ireland is suing Facebook after a naked photo was published on a “shame” page and repeatedly reposted. At a hearing in Belfast’s High Court, the girl’s attorney said that Facebook should have made blocking the image from being republished a “red-line” issue, the BBC reported on Thursday. Her barrister: A naked [14-year-old’s] picture was being put on a shame page. If [Facebook] had blocked it, all this subsequent publication of her naked image would not have taken place. Her lawyers claim that the picture was extorted from her and published over and over again online as a form of revenge. Facebook has claimed that it took t…

Stampado ransomware author returns with new creation Emsisoft security researcher Fabian Wosar informed Softpedia today about a new decrypter he put together that can unlock files encrypted by a new ransomware family called Philadelphia. The number of Philadelphia infections is relatively low because the ransomware was only recently released by its creator, the same crook that developed the Stampado ransomware. Fabian Wosar previously released a free decrypter for the Stampado ransomware as well, about which you can read more here. Since the two ransomware families are related, both being coded in the AutoIT scripting language, Fabian Wosar was able to crack …

Ransomware made over 10K victims in just two weeks MalwareHunterTeam has discovered a new ransomware family that calls itself CryLocker and abuses legitimate services such as Google Maps, Imgur, and Pastee. Researchers first spotted this ransomware towards the end of August, when they noticed something peculiar about its mode of operation, meaning the usage of UDP packets instead of TCP and several connections made to legitimate sites. After further analysis, researchers discovered that CryLocker was infecting users and locking a large number of file types. Instead of sending all information to remote C&C servers, the ransomware was encoding this data a…

According to one such vendor, as of 2013, 93% of recruiters were likely to look at a candidate’s social profile, and 42% had been moved to give the thumbs-up or -down based on what they turned up. There have been various tools put forth that make it easier for employers to get at your “true” self. (And before you protest that our social media selves are not, in fact, our “true” selves…

When police put your photo on a “Wanted” poster for violating probation on two counts of battery, it’s not the best idea to use that photo as your Facebook profile picture. A 42-year-old Florida man learned that lesson the hard way. Police arrested Mack Yearwood last Tuesday on outstanding warrants from Citrus County, on Florida’s Gulf Coast, according to local publication the Palm Beach Post. Police from the town of Stuart said on their Facebook page that the picture came from a “Wanted of the Week” poster. Beyond the bad judgment on what photo to use on Facebook, Yearwood also apparently forgot that he allegedly had a bag of weed in his jeans pocket. Whil…

A bad malware signature caused Sophos antivirus products to detect a critical Windows file as malicious on Sunday, preventing some users from accessing their computers. The false positive detection flagged winlogon.exe, an important component of the Windows Login subsystem, as a Trojan program called Troj/FarFli-CT. Because the file was blocked, some users who attempted to log into their computers were greeted by a black screen. Sophos issued an update to fix the problem within a few hours and said that the issue only affected a specific 32-bit version of Windows 7 SP1 and not Windows XP, Vista, 8 or 10. "Based on current case volume and customer feedback, we b…

Your fridge is getting so smart, security-software maker Kaspersky Lab thinks you probably shouldn’t trust it. As makers of household appliances fill their machines with computer chips to make them smarter, consumers and privacy watchdogs should beware the data collected by these objects and how it’s used, Marco Preuss, a director on Kaspersky’s global research and analysis team in Europe, said at the IFA consumer electronics conference in Berlin. "A fridge is no longer only a fridge, it’s now also a sensor collecting private information," Preuss said. "Vendors need to say what data they collected, where it’s stored and who’s using it, and regulators need to work on…

If you’re hitting the road this holiday weekend, you might find yourself visiting some unfamiliar gas stations, ATMs, or kiosks that accept credit cards. The recent arrest in California of two men who are accused of draining $500,000 from US Bank customers’ accounts should remind people across the country and all over the world: be careful where you swipe your debit card, and be protective of your PIN. KCAL reports that the two men are suspected of multiple skimmer thefts, and they were caught in a sting by police. In these incidents, the suspects used a super-thin device about as wide as a credit card that captures the information on a card’s magnetic strip, and a pin…

When you update to or install Windows 10 there are quite a few first party apps that are installed at that time. Many of them are key elements of the operating system including Mail, Calendar, Groove Music, Movies & TV, Sports, Money and others. However, there are a couple that are installed by default that are not as critical to the OS such as Candy Crush and the Get Office app. Attempts to uninstall these non-critical apps meet with mixed success. Sometimes once removed they stay gone but many times they show back up as an update in the Windows Store. Luckily Candy Crush does not push any notifications to the Action Center but the Get Office app does eve…

There was an “anomaly” today during testing of a SpaceX rocket at Cape Canaveral… the kind of “anomaly” that creates a spectacular fireball, goes “BOOM,” and leaves a smoke plume in the sky. Happily, nobody was hurt during the incident. However, one very expensive piece of high-profile technology went BOOM along with. That tech would be a broadband satellite meant to expand Facebook’s Internet.org access, as Recode reports. The payload was meant to be launched on Saturday (Sept. 3), and now will not be launching at all because much of it (and the rocket) has been reduced to its component atoms. In a statement, SpaceX said it “can confirm that in preparation for toda…
