A new report from the research firm Kantar World Panel claims that sales of Apple's 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus have already claimed 41% of all "phablet" device sales in the US, in the three months it monitored from August to October 2014. The smartphone first went on sale on September 19, or halfway through Kantar's recording period. Kantar considers smartphones to be in the "phablet" catagory if they have displays of 5.5 inches or higher. It added that phablet sales as a whole took up 10% of all US smartphone sales from August to October, compared to just 2% from the same period a year ago. Kantar added: At the point of sale, when asked what drove their choice of …

What's on Peter's iPhone 6 right now!
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies

Much like Rene, I keep my iPhone pretty much bone-stock on its first Home screen. I do this because I've reset it frequently enough that I just can't be bothered to spend a lot of time customizing it, and like Rene, I use it occasionally for product shots when reviewing stuff at iMore and want it looking as fresh-out-of-the-box as possible. I don't like a lot of messy app clutter on my iPhone's Home screens. I pretty compulsively find places to put apps I've downloaded, because I don't want to have to flip through pages finding what I'm looking for. My most frequently used apps I access by just double-pressing the Home button and flipping through pages until I find wha…

Richard's favorite things: 2014 gift guide
by Guest Richard Devine- 0 replies

It's that time of year again, when we perhaps stop thinking about all the cool things that we want, and consider those around us. As each year passes the technology around us continues to grow, become ever more popular, and enrich ever more lives. Perhaps, then, it's little surprise that the recent Black Friday sales saw such scenes of insanity as folks scrambled to grab hot items at low prices. Of course, we're all big geeks at heart, really. So with that in mind and following on from the rest of the team, here's some of the tech – and the none-tech – I've been enjoying in 2014. Hardware MacBook Pro with Retina Display - 13 inch Still the same machine I…

Twitter will soon be offering offering all users of its social network some new features and tools that will enable them to report abusive activity faster, along with a new page that shows which Twitter accounts a user has blocked. Twitter stated: We're improving the reporting process to make it much more mobile-friendly, require less initial information, and, overall, make it simpler to flag Tweets and accounts for review. Eddy Cue comments on ebook price fixing ahead of appeal effort
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

Apple is attempting to get a federal appeals court to overturn last year's judgment on Apple's role in ebook price fixing. The ruling saw, among other things, an external antitrust monitor installed at Apple, something that the company fought against. Apple SVP Eddy Cue, who negotiated deals with publishers for the iBookstore, has now spoken about the case, and why Apple is fighting so hard to overturn the ruling. Cue says that the rise in ebook prices is not evidence of collusion, according to Fortune: "Is it a fact that certain book prices went up?" asks Cue. "Yes. If you want to convict us on that, then we're guilty. I knew some prices were going to go up, but he…

It is offering to chop the bill prices for customers of both carriers by half in a new promotion that begins on Friday, December 5. On that day, current AT&T and Verizon customers can go to Sprint's website to upload a copy of their current bill. Then they have to go to their nearest Sprint store with a copy of that bill and all of the phones on their account, where a store representative will then give them a plan with unlimited talk and text and a data plan that matches what they currently get for half the price. How to change default apps on the Mac
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies

When you double-click on a document in the Mac's Finder, an application will automatically open it. But different apps can open the same kind of documents, and somewhere down the road, you may want to change the default opening behavior of specific document types. How can you control which app opens your document? Double-clicking documents elicits pretty reliable behavior on the Mac: an app will automatically open and load the document so you can view it. When you only have the apps your Mac came with, or maybe a few extras, this isn't so bad: You can pretty much expect the Mac to do what you want to when you double-click. But maybe you've installed a new music ap…
