Lesson Learned #234: Parallel vs Single Running a Bulk Insert with Python
by Guest Jose_Manuel_Jurado- 0 replies

Today, We've been working on a service request that our customer wants to improve the performance of a bulk insert process. Following, I would like to share my experience working on that. Our customer mentioned that inserting data (100.000 rows) is taking 14 seconds in a database in Business Critical. I was able to reproduce this time using a single thread using a table with 20 columns. In order to improve this Python code, I suggested to run in parallel this bulk insert every batch size of 10.000 rows and also, I followed the best practices reducing the execution time of this process: Client Virtual Machine level: Accelerated networking enabled. D…

Machine Learning with Cosmos DB and Synapse Link
by Guest MarcoCardoso- 0 replies

Synapse Link bridges an important scenario when dealing with Cosmos DB: the efficient processing of analytical workloads, without risking the integrity of transactional applications supplying the data. To put this feature to the test, we used an accelerometer dataset for activity recognition (you can check it out here: UCI Machine Learning Repository: Activity Recognition from Single Chest-Mounted Accelerometer Data Set). Our goal is to perform analytical workloads - in this case, training an ML classification model, over data stored in Cosmos DB. The problem Suppose we would like to create an application which can, in real-time, predict what an end …

Considerations on Bidirectional Transactional Replication
by Guest Holger_Linke- 0 replies

Considerations on Bidirectional Transactional Replication Bidirectional transactional replication is a specific Transactional Replication topology that allows two SQL Server instances or databases to replicate changes to each other. Each of the two databases publishes data and then subscribes to a publication with the same data from the other database. The "@loopback_detection" feature ensures that changes are only sent to the Subscriber and do not result in the changes being sent back to the Publisher. The databases that are providing the publication/subscription pairs can be hosted either on the same SQL instance or on two different SQL instances. The SQL in…

Over the last two years, the world has dramatically changed both in our daily lives and how companies conduct business. In the pre-pandemic world, eroding network boundaries and the maturity of SaaS applications precipitated endpoint-first design. The pandemic and post-pandemic era demand it, the world is embracing hybrid workplaces and zero trust postures. When we first launched Network Protection for Windows and built powerful Web Protection and Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps (MDA) capabilities on top of it, we knew our vision to bring you our proxy-less endpoint first architecture would remain incomplete until we delivered for macOS and Linux. That day has arrive…

Our Microsoft Endpoint Manager app protection policies (APP) and mobile device management (MDM) teams have been working hard to make sure Microsoft Intune customers are supported on the new OS release. In this post, we’ll share some of what we’ve found from testing the latest Android beta builds and highlight other noteworthy changes that you should be aware of. In this post, I am detailing the steps I did to fix the PDF Preview on Outlook running on Windows 10, since some customers that are using Windows 10 for Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) asked me a guidance for this. If you are running Windows 11, you can skip this post, since it is already working by design. At least, it was supposed to. Just as a spoiler, I made it work by setting Microsoft Edge PDF Preview Handler on Microsoft Outlook. This file cannot be previewed because there is no previewer installed for it That was the message error that I was getting when I tried to preview a PDF file for Outlook running on Windows 10 of my Azure Virtual Deskt…

As a growing amount of our communications are moving from traditional formats such as in-person meetings and email, to instant messaging and hybrid collaboration via Microsoft Teams, the risk of threat actors abusing Teams to delivery malicious content has also grown. In our previous blog we discussed detecting some common threats in Teams using the Teams audit log such as anomalous users joining meetings or malicious administrative changes. In this blog we will look at how to detect another threat actor angle in Microsoft Teams, the sharing of malicious links. Microsoft Teams provides protection against the sharing of malicious links using our Safe Links fe…

How to capture the actual execution plan of a query in Azure SQL Database This article provides you with steps about how to capture the actual execution plan of a query. It retrieves the information directly from the runtime statistics, without having to extract the query first and having to run it separately outside of the application. The actual execution plan is important for query performance troubleshooting, as it provides runtime information that can explain slow query performance. Actual execution plans contain more details than the estimated execution plans that are available through the Query Store (QDS). The approach described in this article uses …

The new Azure resource entity pages are designed to help your SOC investigate incidents that involve Azure resources in your environment, hunt for potential attacks, and assess risk. What's in it for me You can now gain a 360-degree view of your resource security with the new entity pages, which provide several layers of secur…
